  1. I know it’s not what we like to hear as fans but TK had it right. You don’t know what you have until they have 1000-1500 at bats. The spectrum of possible results for Wallner is really wide - literally all star to bust and everything in between. I will predict that if he gets regular playing time in right fielder he will be a more than adequate fielder.
  2. Huge hat tip to Jax. When he came up as a starter I thought there was no hope he could ever stick in the show much less end up damn good. I really give him credit because his first taste of success in the pen was almost completely based on his excellent slider. He knew that wouldn’t last long term and turned a very mediocre fastball into a weapon. Don’t let a failed starter go without giving them a shot in the bullpen.
  3. I think all of the stated opinions are plausible. AK has shown signs of being an elite hitter and then not. Due to his injuries it’s really difficult to get a read on that. It’s an important factor because he is showing to be a player without much defensive value. I’m holding out hope he will get better at first - many scouts thought he had the tools to be a fine first baseman. He is not an outfielder: slow, poor arm and bad routes. The other factor is that we might need a new home for Julien next year. All in all AK has to hit and hit well if he wants to be a first baseman / DH in this league and the clock is ticking.
  4. I think Kiriloff is done as an outfielder. Hes not particularly fast, has a mediocre arm and takes bad routes to balls.
  5. Can’t wait to see Royce develop and perform this year. I don’t usually pay much attention to “leadership qualities” as it’s really not possible for fans to really have any insight. Having said that Royce seems special in this regard.
  6. I’m sure that’s what they wanted to do but couldn’t find any takers. That’s why they ended up with the deal they did. Ok deal but didn’t address their highest need. As soon as the payroll budget was decided Polanco was gone.
  7. No not sure. Wrong words. Let me rephrase. The concept I liked better was trading Julien plus prospects to get a playoff caliber starter. That was never in play because Polanco had to be moved as a salary dump.
  8. Especially for a team that has legit playoff aspirations. It’s one thing to roll the dice on a young player if you know you aren’t going anywhere. Different story when you are win now team.
  9. Interesting hypothetical question. My view is that for sure there isn’t any surplus value in his contract but I bet he would get claimed. Catching is so scarce. I actually had the same hypothetical thought about Correa. If the Twins are going to run with a lower payroll going forward would getting out of his contract be worth it? For example go to him and say Carlos do you want another shot at free agency? If he has a good year this year would he get a better deal than what he has? I know it’s not happening but an interesting thought exercise (for me anyway).
  10. Understood. Or they just aren’t that accurate.
  11. This is a good summation in my opinion. I like Julien and credit him for the hard work involved in improving his fielding. However I’m not nearly as high on him as most here. His babip was really high last year so some regression is likely. How much will determine his effectiveness going forward. I disagree with the comparisons to Koskie as he was a really good athlete. Juliens ceiling as a defender is mediocre - his hands are not soft and he is stiff in movement. These factors combined with him not hitting leftys at all tells me he can be a useful but not great player. Having said that I admire his competitiveness when he steps in the box.
  12. This sums my feelings about defensive metrics quite nicely. The tip off for me is how much volatility there is in the rankings from year to year. Fielding in baseball would be something that gradually improves or declines. A good fielder doesnt become below average in one year and vice versa.
  13. No doubt Carl was a uber successful businessman and civic leader. However what i stated is true. It’s part of his legacy along with many positives
  14. Yes he does. Of course the master was Greg Maddux. He had so much run on the two seamer that it fooled everyone including the umpires.
  15. I think this is a good observation. I have been generally meh on Falvine but he has grown in his job. This off-season is really a feather in his cap as he has made adjustments to the team with no money. It’s really the bright spot to this payroll cutting mess.
  16. There was a hole to fill and Falvey has no money available so he swung another Billy Beane kind of deal. Viewed through that lens it’s a good pickup. MAT wasn’t coming here for peanuts.
  17. That is what I noticed as well. It’s really one year of Margot for Miller. Maybe the prospect makes a difference.
  18. Dang I’m confused. So you do want to have payroll discussions. I’m going to take my own advice and not partake. I can’t keep up.
  19. My hope is that position the young infielders in a way that maximizes their defensive ceilings for the long run. If Lee is going to be the best third baseman then let’s get him there and get Royce to second or vice versa.
  20. I’m glad they are keeping him as a starter. He still has plenty to prove but always have to pursue the starters role until proven otherwise. I enjoy watching him pitch and am not worried at all that he will be buried in St Paul. There is a decent chance we don’t make it to opening day without a top 5 starter injury.
  21. So we can discuss it so long as we discuss it in a way in which you approve. Got it. Better solution: if you are tired of something don’t partake in it.
  22. You mean Carl the guy who threatened to move the team to North Carolina if we didn’t build him a stadium? Or Carl the guy that threatened contraction when the North Carolina thing proved to be a hoax? A real Twins caretaker.
  23. Wow. Seems like comments get made like this all the time. I’m not happy with this off season but Joe was at least honest (which isn’t in large supply with this club) and now he is going to get crap for it. Baseball is something……
  24. Actually I think the business side of the club is very interesting and part of being a fan for me anyway.
  25. Cool. I have never once used the “cheap Pohlads”. Not once in a decade of posting. I simply think this off season has been a big mistake on their part. That includes not investing in their product at an opportune time and the general disaster their public relations have been. You feel differently and that is cool by me.
