What’s Next for Twins Manager Rocco Baldelli?
TwinsDr2021 replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
My guess for what is next with Rocco is that he will meet with the FO and they will talk about minor tweaks to their approach and he will be managing the Twins in 23 and it will be very similiar to the last three years (I don't mean results, but that wouldn't surprise me, I mean style, game decisions, etc..)- 67 replies

In the End, the 2022 Twins Never Stood a Chance
TwinsDr2021 replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
an both have been pitching in the majors since age 22 and 23, so the odds say they are likely to out perform the guys getting to the majors later (Winder/Ober/Varland for example)- 94 replies

What Happens to the Twins Front Office for 2023?
TwinsDr2021 replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
What about the outfield next year, that seems like a huge question mark again. If they go into next year with Buxton, Kepler, AK/Larnach and nobody else for the 3rd year in a row?- 56 replies

In the End, the 2022 Twins Never Stood a Chance
TwinsDr2021 replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I put this in another thread. Coming into the year the twins top 6 starters were. Gary - 22 starts Ryan - 23 starts Bundy - 25 starts Archer - 25 starts Ober - 7 starts Paddack - 5 starts Smelzter - 12 starts That is 119 starts of 139 games, and they traded for Mahle and got three starts. that is 17 games that basically they had to fill the rotation and if you add Winder that is down to 10 games. The problem wasn't the injuries it was the top 4 pitchers killed the pen and this FO and manager decided to fill that void with mostly 1 inning relief pitchers. As for the injuries to the offensive guys Buxton and Polanco hurt the most, but if you are the FO you really need a plan B and C for Buxton because we all know he isn't playing the whole year. AK, Larnach, Jeffers have never done anything in the majors so again you need a plan if they can't hit or get hurt, doesn't seem like there was one. In conclusion the injuries hurt but more than the roster construction? I am not so sure.- 94 replies

Totally agree with this take as well. Cleveland for example this year top 6 starters were 4th round (2016), 1st (15), 1st(16), 12th (16), 3rd(16) and 3rd (18). (not all their picks)

Again you are 100% correct, but by age 23 Kershaw had pitched 715 major league innings in the majors, 107 at age 21, 171 at 22, 204 at age 22 and 233 at age 23, Verlander in his age 23 season pitched 186 innings and 201 the next year, Scherzer is a better example he pitched 133 in AAA, AFL, and the majors at age 23. (I don't think Laweryson or any Twins prospects are these guys, which is fine that is a high bar for anybody) The amount of innings in the minors isn't all that important, what is important is building up to good amount of innings (arm strength/stamina/ect) and it is generally a good sign if that have done that by their early 20's. Fast movers that have built up their arm by the time they make their debut so they can hit the road running, generally end up being the better pitchers. Innings for the young guys (18,19,20) isn't as important as moving though the system and having success, so at 21,22,23 they are ready for full time major league starting (whatever that means in this day and age). Guys that do this at a later age I think of more as bottom of the rotation and bullpen arms (maybe great bullpen arms like Duran for example). I really hope this twins group of older prospects (23 and up) buck the trend and become super successful because is it great to good./solid starting rotation on the cheap.

Agreed going forward this could be a good thing, hopefully WInder can stay healthy. I didn't list them because they were part of the pitchers that covered the 17 games and weren't part of the original six/seven starters It will be interesting where they fit in next year, but have all winter to discuss that

The Twins have played 139 games and have gotten gotten 95 starts from Ryan, Gray, Bundy and Archer. If you add the 5 from Paddack and 7 from Ober before they got injured that is 107, meaning they had to cover 32 games, Smelzter covered 12 of them and Mahle 3, So we are really talking about 17 games and that is too much to over come? To me that say more about this front office than anything else or the lack of people that cover the Twins actually looking at the data. But that is just me getting sick of excuses.

I agree, they still have Archer/Bundy/three rookies and Gray as their starting pitchers, generally not a good sign.

Is Joe Ryan Who We Thought He Was?
TwinsDr2021 replied to Cody Pirkl's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
He is basically what I thought he would, he is a 26 year old rookie so the odds and what he did last year said he should be a starting pitcher with an ERA between 4 and 4.50, and averages about 5 innings a start. He has only really had one real bad game a handful of clunkers and a handful of really top end starts. If he wants to step it up he has to become more efficient with his pitches, way too many games with really high pitch count and low innings. Next year is the year IMO that really shows who he is, is a 5 inning high pitch count guy, or does he figure it out and pitch a little deeper into games more consistently. -
One of your best, pretty deep SCSU reference (I like it) wonder how many will get it.

Short Starts Are Not a Minnesota Twins Thing
TwinsDr2021 replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
You know what amazes me is how the Twins don't have one Spencer Strider type, a 23 year old pitcher that has started at lest the 6th inning in 11 of his 15 starts and was drafted in the 4th round of 2020. Or how 12 pitchers just yesterday went a minimum of 6 innings, don't these teams know about pitch count, batters faced and TTO? The last time a Twins pitcher went 6 innings was August 26th. and since then the Twins starters have given up 3,3,4,2,5(Mahle), 5,8,5,9,6, and 1 hit (Gray 5 innings). And the worst 4 were wins.- 86 replies

Short Starts Are Not a Minnesota Twins Thing
TwinsDr2021 replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Well I wrote that bad or you misinterpreted what I wrote, nobody expects this team or any team to have all 5 starters go the distance or even 6,7,8 innings every game, but I do expect a FO to be able to have one at least maybe two that on good days can get deep into games, then a guy or two that can get you into the 7th, and your 4 and 5 starters hopefully get 5 decent innings and maybe more on good days. But if you throwing out a starter that basically has little chance to even get you 5 (or you are going to pull after 5 no matter how well they are pitching), then maybe try something different with them. NO where ever I have said the standard for any SP is to complete a game, I have never even said the standard for a pitcher is to pitch 7 innings every game. Do I expect somebody your traded a first round pick for to have more than 1/3 games be a minimum of 6 innings, yup I do. As for your last paragraph you are just making stuff up, why I have no idea. Edit - I hate no pitchers not even Pagan or anybody that hasn't been good, I wish them all well even if I don't want them pitching in the majors for my favorite team.- 86 replies

Twins 1, Yankees 7: Twins Strikeout in Game 2
TwinsDr2021 replied to Sherry Cerny's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I don't remember the exact number, but I head that the Twins have ended the game or at least their last at bat with a fly ball to track 7 or 8 times, which seems like they are trying to hit a homer even if a single would score 1 or 2.- 27 replies

Short Starts Are Not a Minnesota Twins Thing
TwinsDr2021 replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
The only way this strategy works is to have a lot of cheap talented pitchers, so far the Twins only have the cheap part. Because no matter how much baseball has changed at the end of the year you still have to pitch around 1458 innings. Currently it looks like the Twins have pitched a hair under 1200 and Ryan, Gray, Bundy and Archer have pitched just 37% of those innings.- 86 replies

Short Starts Are Not a Minnesota Twins Thing
TwinsDr2021 replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Is this first two paragraphs satire? We are now blaming the fans for FO's roster construction and minor league teachings? I would ask the question, does anybody on this site expect 5 pitchers to be able to complete games? I assume that answer is no. (or at least should be )Do the fans expect 5 starters to even go more than 5 innings? Again I would assume that answer is no. Do the Fans expect a couple of starters to be able to finish a couple of games a year or even pitch into the 8th a few times a year? I think that answer is yes. Do fans assume a pitcher that has given up 1 hit and no runs in 5 innings to come out for the 6th? I think that is a reasonable expectation. Do fans assume some games a guy is going to have a high pitch count after 5 innings and be pulled, again that is going to happen to all pitchers so it is going to happen. Do fans generally hate "starters" (yes) do we understand it is going to happen for whatever reason, I believe so. Do fans hate being lied to? Yes And every time somebody claims that what the Twins are doing is exactly what everybody else is doing is lying. And if the response is well the Twins just don't have good pitchers, Then lets stop talking about batters faced, pitch count, innings and blast this FO for putting the team in this situation, because it is getting sickening reading/listening to people run cover for this FO.- 86 replies

Short Starts Are Not a Minnesota Twins Thing
TwinsDr2021 replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
"Four pitchers have made the vast majority of starts for the Twins this season. Among them, Sonny Gray is the only one you would even consider for a top spot or two in a good rotation. Joe Ryan, " That is the most important and maybe accurate thing written. What year are we in with this FO? and this is what they have to show for a starting rotation?- 86 replies

I find it very confusing on what the hell the Twins are doing. I would have been fine with Varland being taken out after the 5th with Judge coming up, but if you bring him out for the 6th let him f'n pitch.

To be honest there has been so many it is hard to believe this team is where it is at. Bullpen, Sano, AK, Laranch, to me Gray has been a disappointment he might get to 130 innings? Polanco, Correa, Buxton (really more of a top of the lineup things for long stretches) the list goes on and on. But the biggest has to be the injuries to the pipeline or just pitchers in general. Pagen isn't a huge disappointment to me, didn't think he would be more than a middle relief guy, it is a bigger disappoint that he is still on the team and that isn't on him.

Dobnak's story is pretty amazing, but that doesn't change the fact his career WAR is negative. And if this front office wants to call that a success congrats to them, I mean with that standard there can be no failures right? Sure 2019 was a great 28.1 innings, very similar to the first three starts of Andrew Albers another huge success right? I am sure the front office appreciates you having their back.
