  1. Bumgarner is a good hitter for a pitcher. That said, you'd think they would have someone available to DH. They have had 16 position players play for them this year who have a higher OPS than the .611 that Bumgarner is sporting. I suspect this shows a level of confidence in their ability to beat the A's. It also captures a good deal of publicity. So, go ahead Madison. Hit the ball sharply!
  2. I've followed the Arcia threads pretty thoroughly and I am pretty sure no one, at any point, has suggested any such thing. Did you have a point?
  3. Dimaggio's record seems the most improbable. An incredible streak. Oddly enough, Ted Williams actually had a higher BA during DiMaggio's streak than DiMaggoi did. Also, Dimaggio won the MVP that year, even though Williams had a higher BA, OBP and SLG. To further display how badly Williams was overlooked for DiMaggio, it was also the last time someone would hit over .400 for 74 years and counting. Ripkin's record should never be broken. Nothing against Ripken, but it really wasn't the best thing for his team for him to never get a day off. The Front Office decided to let Ripken set that record, probably to the detriment of their star player's performance.
  4. It is so simple to say that we could put Polanco at SS, but he doesn't play there, even in AAA. As anxious as I am to see him get a prolonged opportunity, it will be at 2B if it ever comes with the Twins. That reminds us, class, that we have two players who can play reasonably well at SS. Escobar has proven to be an above average SS. Nunez is slightly below average, but not nearly as bad as he is portrayed on these pages. So you want to trade Nunez and Escobar and put Polance at SS where his arm is not considered strong enough to play SS in AAA? Plus, he would then be our only SS. I'm optimistic about this young man, but not foolish. Roster management, people! Think ahead. Who is the SS? Who is the backup? P.S. This is the Rochester Red Wings roster. Do you even see anyone listed as a shortstop?
  5. So I guess if Twins batters “plated” a baserunner, it means they coated him with something; gold, bronze, cheap veneer, liquid horse manure? This explains so much!
  6. I was disappointed in the lack of effort to help the bullpen, but it was tempered by the belief that the Twins were going to be pretty bad this year. Of course, I did not see THIS coming... Still, boatloads of money for Sipp or Bastardo when the team is going to be poor would only have clogged the bullpen. That excuse only works, however, if we get Shaggy and some of the boys up to let them have a taste of the show and see who performs well. If we don't know any more about these guys next off-season than we do now, at least we will know that Polanco is not the only one whose future is a mystery to the front office and everyone else.
  7. Nunez has gotten better at fielding every year, pretty much. He's not league average at SS, but he isn't the two mittened pussycat that the Yankees let go. He is solidly at a point that his bat more than makes up for his fielding deficiencies. A team that has playoff hopes knows to go after the hot hand, and that is Nunez. Personally, I'd be sorry to see him go. As Brock says, he's likely not a .900 OPS guy, but he's gotten better each of the last three years and has been a fun distraction for us this year.
  8. I highly doubt that anyone on these boards expects Arcia to be Ortiz 2.0. That is not going to happen. The fact that it will not happen does not mean that those of us sorry to see him go are delusional. Someone posted an excellent breakdown of how Arcia has been used this year (sadly, I cannot find it). It was not pretty. It's as if every time he starts to roll he gets benched for a while. When someone on the team hit a home run Arcia was always one of the happiest guys on the team. He was always pulling for his teammates. I wish him well.
  9. By the title I thought it was going to be a vote on who we electrocute. Never mind.
  10. Um, yeah, well thanks for not doing that. George Benson was a great choice.
  11. I was going to complain about Dozier hitting cleanup, but after Nunez, Mauer and Grossman we really have a lineup of batters who are hitting poorly. Like, really poorly. P.S. Can we bring Polanco up to DH?
  12. The Twins will have to eat some salary if they expect Nolasco to go to a team that needs an innings-eater for a post season run. I do not see this happening. This is also why we will not be able to move Dozier. We owe him $15 million between 2017 and 2018. This article at FanGraphs suggest that no one will show any interest. I wonder who Polanco will play for, when someone finally puts him on the field.
  13. Well, I would love that, except that Dozier is signed for $15 million between 2017 and 2018. No one wants his skills for that kind of money.
  14. I just don't understand why a team with a record like ours cannot find out what we really have. Maybe playing Arcia against all RH pitchers for 5 weeks will be painful, but maybe not. The same with Polanco. What do you suppose he has to do to get an opportunity? Get released? I know it's a small sample size, but Polanco has a career .861 OPS in MLB and an OPS of .880 in AAA this year. These are two guys about whom we will only learn what their potential is when they display it for some other team.
  15. Damn you spinowner! I thought I had 'understatement of the year' locked up with "Dozier does not belong at the top of the order". I'll grant that you may have tied me.
  16. I know that "Nunez is a terrible fielder" has gotten to be kind of a mantra around here, but he ranks 23rd out of 43 SS with 50 or more at bats and 32nd out of 53 3B. Not soon to be confused with Brooks Robinson or Omar Vizquel (you youngsters have no idea how good he was not all that long ago), but he's not the stone glove that the Yankees gave up on. He is also 9th of 43 SS in WAR this season (all data sourced from FanGraphs). His hitting this year has more than made up for his fielding gaffes.
  17. He has also never been ineffective for an 'extended period of time' at the MLB level. Other than Graham, Perkins and Boshers (let go after 1.2 innings, on the DL after 2.0 innings, and recently acquired, respectively) no one on the 2016 Minnesota Twins has been given fewer innings (3.2) than Alex Meyer to show what they can do. I appreciate your point, and until this year I have never believed the FO and manager were completely clueless. However, this year the evidence is leaning pretty strongly one particular way...
  18. Dozier's attitude is hurting him and his team. If he won't take outside pitches to right field let him not take them to right field in AAA. Enough of his childish foolishness. Almost as stubborn and foolish as continuing to bat Dozier at the top of the order. You cannot hope to get rid of Plouffe and Dozier and also let Nunez go. Who are you, Terry Ryan? Think roster management. Polanco needs to play. I agree that going into next year not knowing whether he is MLB material would be an agregious error. Bat Arcia against RHP only. If he fails then you know that, but again... FIND OUT WHAT YOU HAVE.
  19. I think the evidence is there in the season. Molitor wants his players to be aggressive on the basepaths. Rosario was aggressive. He was also successful. A reasonable throw would have made Plouffe's steal attempt unsuccessful. I don't disagree with Rosario going down to AAA to get his hitting back on track, but Molitor's annoyance over Rosario's steal seems personal. Eddie was being exactly the kind of Twins baserunner that Molitor seems to want. (only from D. Santana, I guess)
  20. Grossman has done really well. The question is, did he finally figure something out that suddenly makes him a very good hitter? Is his career .240/.327/.341 (.668) something he's left behind? Chances are that he is having an unusual hot streak. I hope this is the real Robbie, but the odds are against that. I really would like to see Polanco getting some shots at 2nd base. Why Dozier is batting at the top of the order is a mystery to me.
  21. Kepler in AAA this year: .282 .367 .455 (.822) Polanco in AAA this year: .312 .368 .532 (.900) I have started to worry that Molitor is really an idiot out of touch. I really hope he plays Kepler every day, and not just against left handed starters. I kinda liked Tom Kelly, but I never thought I'd miss him as much as I do now.
  22. Having pocketed 34 losses in the first 46 games would not necessarily have fewer than 110 losses be a success. It would, however, be an improvement.
  23. I have been pretty quiet about trading Plouffe because I saw this team as weak on true talent. I've finally come around to thinking that we need to let him go. If we ever want a Buxton/Kepler/Arcia outfield with a fourth who forces his way onto the roster we need to make room for that. Outfielders are the easiest to find in the FA market as well. Move Sano to the infield. I really hope Dozier can have a good 6 weeks that allow us to get something for him. Polance should be playing. Unless Dozier relents and starts to hit the other way he will have no value. Trying to pull everything just has pitchers pitch you outside. Unless you are an elite hitter, it is a recipe for failure. Nunez is the cat's ass for a utility infielder. His BABIP is high, but not amazingly so for a guy hitting line drives at the rate he's hitting them. He would be tough for me to let go.
