  1. Vargas has a huge split difference against RH and LH pitchers. That is true in both last season and his career splits. He absolutely rakes against LH pitching and hits downright poorly against RH pitching. Mauer's career splits show that he's better against RH pitching. That was especially true last year. It appears that he is not as balanced against same siders as he once was. A platoon of Mauer/Vargas at first is so obvious that I have to believe the Twins are seeing it, though I did not notice Molitor using such a platoon late in the year. Why hasn't this already been happening?
  2. I will say that I am not that high on Wisler. You, on the other hand, are not that high on Newcomb, but from our perspective you are ridiculously spoiled. I am no expert on this but if you were talking to me and suggested Newcomb and Soroka and a young long shot (position or pitcher) I would be interested in talking, EDIT: I'm trying to be civil here, but the truth is I want Allard.
  3. Ryan Braun? The guy who is owed $80 million over the next 4 years? Well, of the teams that can afford it, your team is certainly one.
  4. If you are going to use logic then you are not allowed on Game Threads.
  5. You go to Vegas and put $1000 on the Twins winning the division. Then sit back until October, when you retire.
  6. With our pitching staff? You hang yourself.
  7. Not really sure how this works. We were the worst team in baseball in 2016. If/when the Dodgers drop someone from their 40-man roster do we get the first chance at claiming them? This makes me think that if the deal goes through it will likely include 2 Dodgers currently on the 40-man roster.
  8. Folks on this board are a little stuck on the Braves having Swanson and Albies. Sure, they might not both be ready this year, but you have an enviable middle infield in your near future. Do you think 2 years (unless you extend him) of Dozier fits in with the team plans? The other thing here is that we don't really expect you to part with Newcomb. At least that's what another Braves fan has told us. So we'd like a good, fair trade with the Braves that helped us rebuild our pitching staff. Just not sure what the Braves would be willing to offer. Your thoughts?
  9. Baxendale posted those very good numbers in AAA after posting poorer K rates and a higher WHIP in AA. I sure hope you're right.
  10. Based on K/9, WHIP and level achieved I am losing confidence that Wheeler, Baxendale or Wimmers ever help the MLB club. For example, Wimmers had 9.1 K/9 last year in AAA, but had a 1.329 WHIP. That's not going to play in the show. Wheeler posted decent WHIP numbers last year, but he's 25 years old and had 7.0 K/9 in AAA. At least he's a starter. I'd be surprised if Burdi was ready, but who knows? I would like to see Melotakis and Hildenberger pushed aggressively. Let's find out if either is going to help the bullpen eventually. If our bullpen is strong and we have strong RP coming that might be the only source of a 'trade chip' we have in the near future. Other than Dozier.
  11. The Dodgers are a carefully run organization (IMHO). Bellinger is off the table because he fills a soon-to-be need and does it inexpensively. I would like the Twins to get two pitchers (plus a position prospect) in this trade, but I do not believe that asking for two MLB ready pitchers is realistic. The Dodgers are not going to want to lose too much depth, especially coming off a year where the injury genie hung out all season on their front porch. That said, the Twins need to get real value for Dozier. I am starting to believe we will not get the players we want. We will, however, be watching Dozier have what I expect to be a very good year. It's not the best outcome for a rebuilding team, but you cannot give away a player who is that good unless you get a reasonable return.
  12. FanGraph's Depth Charts suggest the Dodgers will have 5 starting pitchers with a WAR greater than or equal to ESan. ESan leads our pitching Depth Chart, so I cannot see anything current we could give the Dodgers to make them happy. I think asking for two MLB ready pitchers is a little steep. I say this believing that Dozier would be a huge add to the Dodgers.
  13. Doomtints, on 05 Jan 2017 - 3:54 PM, said: Who has been saying this? I have seen this stated a few times now but I don't see anybody arguing that Dozier is about to turn into a pumpkin. Significant regression from 6.5 WAR can still be well above pumpkin level.
  14. I wonder why the idea that Dozier is going to significantly regress seems so obvious to so many. It appears that it is based on the 42 home runs. Therefore Dozier would not be that helpful to the Dodgers. Dozier had a higher WAR than any Dodger last year. Over the last 3 years Dozier's 14.1 WAR is higher than any Dodger position player over the same time period. Even if he doesn't match his output from last year he is still a significant addition for the Dodgers. However, if the Dodgers are going to the World Series without his help then why is this alleged discussion even taking place? Dozier's value is not based on the fact that he went to the All-Star game. It is based on the fact that he is a very good player trending upward.
  15. More than they have, IMHO.
  16. Sometimes this editor is frustrating.
  17. Well if I actually look I can see that Mussina is on his 4th ballot and Schilling on his 5th. Got it. Thanks
  18. I'm not sure that they shouldn't be in. I just think it's odd that they are getting so much first ballot attention, based on the recent history of one particular pitcher who was clearly better than either of them.
  19. When David Ortiz went to the Red Sox until he was 38 years old the Red Sox got greater than .800 OPS (and several times >.900 OPS) from their 1B every single year except one. With that kind of production it made sense to keep Big Papi at DH. The Twins do not have that coming from 1B unless we see if from Vargas again or Park steps up. Right now I would really hope he works hard at 3B because I believe he can be adequate there. If he wants to be. It would make the whole team better.
  20. Perkins is a wonderful story and has been a great Twin. However, he should have been traded after the 2013 season. After 3 terrible, 96+ loss years the FO should have realized that an elite closer on a very bad team is an unnecessary luxury. Even if he never fully recovers I certainly appreciate how hard he worked and love his attitude. Perhaps a career behind the mic after baseball?
  21. I believe that if a trade happens at all it will be announced this week. Otherwise. we'll see Dozier batting leadoff for the Twins (though why leadoff? Oh yeah, the guy who makes out the lineup card...).
  22. Some of these are good arguments. The winning %, however, does not. Mussina had superior run support. I also don't think 'stuck around a long time' MLB is a very strong argument against, as players are not paid if they are not delivering MLB talent (present Twins team excepted). My point is not who is in that shouldn't be, but trying to figure how Blyleven could be on the ballot 14 years and someone like Mussina should get in on the first ballot (other than Blyleven is kind of a jerk to people). I cannot see how this occurs as a slam dunk other than him having played for the Yankees. BTW: Blyleven had career WAR of 96.5.
  23. I cannot see Mussina or Schilling in the HOF. It took Blyleven, who had the 3rd highest strikeout total in the history of baseball upon his retirement, until the last year of eligibility to get in. His career FIP was 3.19. Mussina's was 3.57. Shilling's was 3.23. They both had fewer wins than Blyleven. I know that in these Sabermetric times we should look past wins, but it has always come into play. And if we are doing that, then we should realize that if Mike Mussina had played for the Kansas City Royals his name would not even be in this conversation. Tim Raines will finally get in, and I am happy for him.
  24. I am at the point that if the Dodgers get Dozier I will be pulling for them to win it all! And if we keep Dozier I will chuckle every time the Dodgers lose 1-0 or 2-1 to a LH pitcher. I can be such a jerk sometimes...
