Interesting conversation about Mahle, who I hope/expect will be very good for the Twins as they battle for the Division Crown. What I don't understand is the Reds management. They traded Sonny Gray to the Twins late in spring training. In the past week they sent Castillo to Seattle and Mahle to the Twins. That is three starting pitchers most teams would beg to have. Why weren't they able to keep this trio and build around it. Considering pitching is the most important aspect of winning baseball, they should have been able to have a competitive team in 2022.

Minor League Report (8/4): Brooks Lee Debuts in Twins' System
roger replied to Nash Walker's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
I don't know what to make of Balazovic this year. Has he had any good starts? Do any of the TD guys know, is he battling some type of injury? Should the Twins shut him down before working with him this winter, hoping he is better in 2023? Also saw from the brief Saints write-up in today's Strib that Brent Rooker had a two run home run for Omaha last night. See that he was just traded by the Padres to the Royals. Great seeing Lee playing in Fort Myers. Hopefully, they will move him up to the Mighty Mussels soon so he can have a couple weeks against better pitching before the year ends. The player I really want to see, however, is Prielipp. I pray that he will be as good as some thought before his injury as the Twins really need one of these young pitching prospects to turn into the real deal. Nice outing by Medina. I had forgotten that he was the PTBNL in the Taylor Rogers trade. When I was looking at the Twins website on Tuesday, was surprised to see that they have him ranked as their #9 prospect. Saw in his bio that he was considered the top pitching prospect from Venezuela in his signing class. Gonna have to keep a closer eye on this young man.- 20 replies

Anyone who has read my comments over the past however many years TD has been around knows that I believe every good minor league prospect is going to become a superstar. I guess this began way back when I was writing about the minor leagues on John Bonnes' site, whatever that was called. [Was it Twins Territory, John?] So I have been in love with the Twins minor league system for at least 20 years. With these moves I want to proclaim that I have seen the light and now understand that minor league prospects can be used to improve a roster for that late season push. I still believe it makes sense to hang onto those best prospects, guys like Royce Lewis, Miranda, AK and probably the top two from this year's draft. My transition probably began when I understood the reasoning behind last spring's trade of Petty for Sonny Gray. This strategy makes more sense when trading good prospects like Steer and E-S, players blocked by young players getting it done for the big league team. And I love finding those diamonds in the rough in rounds later than the first couple, guys like Steer that can be a major part of bringing in a valuable asset. I am impressed, really impressed by the front office getting two key players who will be around for more than two months. Fantastic move, guys. Now let's get Mahle extended this winter and Lopez next winter.

Twins Minor League Report (8/3): Mikey Freakin’ Perez
roger replied to Andrew Mahlke's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
Must disagree with many of the above comments about Palacios. I believe he is a future major league starting shortstop. Assuming Lewis eventually gets beyond his injuries, that may not be long-term with the Twins. Assuming Correa does opt out, which I hope he doesn't, I can see Palacios starting for the Twins until Lewis is ready. Remains as a reserve with the Twins for a year or two before being dealt to someone as their starter. No reason in my mind why he cannot become a player similar to the guy the Twins had for a day or two this spring as he moved from Texas to New York.- 17 replies

Unlike several above, I was not surprised by what our FO did on Tuesday. Heck no, I was shocked. None of us has a clue how any of the prospects will turn out, even E-S. If history holds, a couple will play in the major leagues and maybe one becomes a very good player. In return the Twins restocked to make a legitimate run for the Central Division crown and maybe, just maybe a few wins in the playoffs. I expect we are going to be happy with all the pitchers. But I have this nagging feeling that the big reward is going to be Leon. The Twins catchers weren't good defensively, to my eyes, and both were disappointing with their bats...although Jeffers was hitting better when injured. I could be wrong, but I remember Leon as a very good defensive catcher when playing for Cleveland over the years, someone who could actually throw out a base stealer. Considering he is only 33, I was surprised that he was both no longer on Cleveland's 40-man roster and available for such a little cost. I can foresee him being behind the plate half the time for the remainder of the season with our pitchers performing better as a result. Hopefully, that starts tomorrow with his catching Mahle in his first start.

Will Alex Kirilloff Ever Truly Recover?
roger replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Celestino replaced Urshela on the paternity list. Assume he will be back in a day or two. Will be interesting who goes to the Saints when he is. Seems Cave prefers a big league check and is playing like he wants to stay. -
Looking at the bullpen chart, seems Moran or Megill were the two on the bubble. Does Megill have options remaining? If not, that was the deciding factor. Also may want to get Moran back to St Paul with the mission to reduce the walks.

Minor League Hitter of the Month - July 2022
roger replied to renabanena's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
Gotta be a bit sad, April/May/July winners are all gone. Have zero problem with any of the trades, doesn't mean we can't be sad to see several wonderful prospects moving on. Wish them luck, although I have a feeling E-S doesn't need as much luck as others.- 8 replies

Will Alex Kirilloff Ever Truly Recover?
roger replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I have often thought that the Alex Kirilloff working his ways towards the Twins was so similar to Jason Kubel. Both appeared to be special, very special hitters. After breaking in with the Twins late in the season, Kubel went to the AFL where he had a serious knee injury. He never recovered the speed he once had and the injury had a lasting effect on his hitting. As you stated, the Twins have yet to see AK swing the bat like he is capable of. Will they be able to fix his wrist so he can be that hitter in 2023? 2024? Hopefully, he does find the fix and is the hitter we hoped for while still with the Twins, and not later in his career with another team. -
Assessing the Twins Trade for Tyler Mahle
roger replied to Sherry Cerny's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Add me to the list of all who hated to see E-S go. On the other hand, I don't know where he would break into a future Twins lineup with Miranda, Arraez and hopefully, Kirilloff as well as a healthy Lewis blocking his path. Now lets keep Mahle healthy and pitching like he has away from Cincy. The other good news is what was reported in this morning's Strib. Apparently Correa's comment was that he was happy Miranda wasn't included in any trades, apparently he told Rocco that Jose should be "untouchable." Guess those Puerto Rico guys want to stick together. Hopefully, Correa still feels that come November.- 46 replies

Assessing the Twins Trade for Michael Fulmer
roger replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
As a 2019 draft pick, Gibson-Long would have to be added to the 40-man this winter or exposed to the Rule 5. That's assuming the rules didn't change in the new CBA...they didn't, did they? Doubt they would have room to add so he could have been gone. With Steer also traded, the Rule 5 crunch got a bit easier to deal with. Smart move that many here at TD have been writing about. Hopefully Fulmer will be lights out for two months and the Twins resign him for a couple more years. -

Twins Acquire Tyler Mahle from Reds
roger replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
In my opinion, they still have the best lefty, Prielipp. Expect they felt they were ok trading the two lefties and Steer/E-S after making their top two picks last month. -
Twins Acquire Tyler Mahle from Reds
roger replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
The article says thru 2023, Seth. So that is only the next two months, plus one year. Is the article wrong? Or were you including the next two months as a year? Like many, this is turning out to be more than I expected. Not certain I like losing both Steer and E-S, but so be it. Now, one more relief rental for a lower minor league guy and they should be set for a nice run. -

Twins Acquire Orioles Closer Jorge Lopez

Was it last year or earlier that their trade wasn't announced until shortly after the deadline? Sincerely hope they don't make us wait that long for whatever move(s) they still need to make.- 113 replies

Twins Acquire Orioles Closer Jorge Lopez
roger replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
What if you look at it from a different angle, Minny505? If the Twins were to make a move for a younger backup, perhaps he is someone they believe can share the spot with Jeffers in 2023 and beyond. What if the Twins Doctors believe the 6-8 weeks quoted for Jeffers return will actually be 8++ weeks? Is it possible Jeffers doesn't return, or doesn't return until late in the year? I also don't understand the belief that Jeffers is a 'really good defensive catcher,' although many/most are of that opinion. Why do I say that, he has been unable to throw out hardly any baserunners. Maybe I'm old school, but I believe the most important part of catching are handling the pitchers, blocking balls in the dirt and throwing out runners. To me, stealing strikes is really as LaTroy says, bad umpiring and hopefully goes away next year with the robo umps. Anyway, there could be good reasons for the Twins to be interested in upgrading their backup catcher. Then again, they may like Hamilton and are happy with him for the next X weeks.- 113 replies

Twins Acquire Orioles Closer Jorge Lopez
roger replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Hate to give up Povich, but am learning from this year's disappointment in so many young starters that potential seldom reaches success at Target Field. Damn, the injuries to top pitchers has been disappointing this summer. What seems to make it worthwhile is the two years of additional control. Any reports what his salary is for those two years? Agree that I would like to see a couple rentals, another reliever and an older starter that has two months left on his arm.- 113 replies

Agree it is great having both Enlow and SWR back pitching. Excellent 3 innings from Enlow. Will second those comments above about Palacios. Have been saying for several weeks that should Correa opt out, as expected, I put JP at short until Lewis is healthy. Then let the two battle it out for the starting job. Who knows, maybe JP will end up being a long term shortstop with a great glove who hits around .270ish. That works for most teams. In any case, the kid has to be added to the 40-man come November.

Minor League Report (7/30): Edouard Julien Goes Nuclear
roger replied to Matt Braun's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
So good seeing Beckham rewarded for his hitting at St. Paul. Is Severino hitting his way onto the Twins 40-man come November? Or is he hitting his way to another team before Tuesday? Amazing seeing five guys hitting over .300 in the DSL. And a sixth at .299, with Acuna headed there with his hot bat in July.- 10 replies
