Are Twins' Third Base Plans for Jose Miranda a Misstep?
roger replied to Alex Boxwell's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Loved the last five words of your comment, MMM. Got a really good smile! And count me among those that just doesn't understand why this article was even written. Has anyone seen Miranda this spring? Has Alex? Has he had a discussion with Miranda on what he did over the winter? I just don't understand why being in better shape, whatever that means, relates to being a poorer hitter or power hitter in 2023. -
Twins Daily 2023 Top Prospects: #9 Louie Varland, RHP
roger replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
Loved the young man I saw on the mound at Yankee stadium and his next four games. Considering how little experience he has, would think all his pitches will improve beginning next week. Will be shocked if he isn't much higher than a #5 starter in future Twins rotations. Like many of you, am tired of seeing the first thing mentioned what his velo is...or isn't. Have to wonder where the experts would have ranked Brad Radke the year before his joining the Twins as one of their top pitchers for what was it, a decade? Had a chance to talk to an old timer, maybe 20 or so years ago. One of the young Legion players at the banquet wanted to get into a debate with him about throwing hard. What I recall is a response that was more about refining all your pitches and being able to throw them when and where you wanted. He certainly never threw hard, doubt he ever broke 90. Yet, he went on to win more games in MLB than any other left handed pitcher. As he said, Velocity ain't all that important if you know how to pitch. -
Interesting article. Biggest question may be what is the arm strength of Lewis and Lee as they will likely be playing somewhere in the infield by the end of 2023. Must take exception, however, to your comment about the 'new' defensive challenge. Nothing is new. Rather, baseball is returning to how it was played for its first 100++ years before computers got way more involved than some of us old timers prefer.

Twins Daily 2023 Top Prospects: #10 Austin Martin, SS
roger replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
At #10, do you have him too high? Or too low? Hopefully, 2023 will answer those questions. Add me to the list of those who would encourage the Twins: "If it ain't broke, don't fik it." Like many of you, I see a ton of value from an Arraez like player, a player who has a ton of value without much or any power. Add the fact that Martin has lots of speed, and we could (note I used the word could) have someone who becomes Luis +.- 83 replies

2023 Prospect Previews: Tanner Schobel

Often find myself scratching my head when reading scouting grades. He has four grades of 50 and one 45. Cannot understand how that equates to a 45 overall? -
Twins Daily 2023 Top Prospects: #11-15
roger replied to Theodore Tollefson's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
Question? Who has the higher ceiling, Mercedes or ‘Em Rodriguez? And how high are those ceilings? The little we saw of Wallner in right field told me he needs lots of work. Unless he improves a lot, the only position I want to see him playing is DH regardless how good his arm is.- 29 replies

Not a clue, but that is what spring training is for. With the Lopez trade, however, someone is going to be moved out of the starting rotation. That is unless they have more early season injuries. Hopefully, that isn't happening this year.

Have there been reports that the wrist is still a problem? Or are you and others merely speculating it still is a problem?

Ranking the Twins Offseason Moves
roger replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Their signing three catchers with major league experience to minor league deals should be mentioned. It is probable one of their catchers will get injured at some point this summer. When that happens, one of the three will be called up to play some of the time. Prior to that, they will be valuable while working with the young pitchers in St. Paul. I hoped they would sign one veteran to this role, am surprised they signed three.- 44 replies

Sure seem to be a lot of commenters with a burr under their saddles this morning. Guess that includes Hunter. My biggest concern from reading this are the comments about kirilloff's wrist. Have been gone for a week, however, the last I read in the Strib was that he was swinging without any pain. All was good. Has that changed? As for Gallo, don't know a lot about him. Hate hitters who strike out a lot like Sano, but on the other hand a K is a hell of a lot better than a weak grounder into an inning ending double play. Expect he doesn't do a lot of that. On the other hand, wouldn't most of us be thrilled to walk into the office this morning and have our boss call us in and tell us if we make a one year commitment he will up our pay to $12M, or $11M whatever he is making. This game really doesn't make a lot of sense any more.

Twins Daily 2023 Prospect Rankings (Part 2: Prospects 21-30)
roger replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
Seeing Severino has twice signed contracts of $2M+, was surprising he wasn't selected in last year's Rule 5. Don't recall hearing all that much about his results last summer, but looking at the end results his numbers are encouraging. Makes me even more surprised someone didn't take a flyer on him in the draft. I know Acuna was in the DSL last summer, but should he rise quickly and make the Twins in three years he would do so as a 20 year old...just like his brother. Remember checking the box scores those first few weeks that the DSL was playing and it was painful. But then a light bulb went off and he tore the cover off the ball for the rest of the season. Also recall that there are many years when the Twins don't have any DSL hitter with an average over .300. Last year they had a bunch. Don't know what that means?- 33 replies

Offseason Status Update: All in a Month's Work
roger replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Was both surprised and elated when Sisk wasn't lost in the Rule 5 draft. The league was telling us he didn't have a lot of value. For him to then headline a deal for Taylor is surprising and an excellent move to improve the team's depth. I cannot believe the Twins in their wildest dreams would have thought last November they could resign Correa to a six-year deal. Not being tied to any really long-term deal has to be the goal of most teams, certainly those not located on either coast. Thanks to the ineptitude of the Giants and Mets, the Twins get the best of both worlds with a six year deal with four option years. Considering the Twins no longer have any good catching prospects at the higher levels of the minor leagues, signing three veterans to minor league contracts was an important move that hasn't been talked about here and elsewhere. Getting Wolters and the two other guys provide insurance for an injury and valuable council for those young pitchers at St. Paul. Hated losing Arraez. But understand the reasons and will cross my fingers that Lopez is as good as advertised and can be signed to at least a few years extension.- 24 replies

Twins Daily 2023 Prospect Rankings (Part 1: Honorable Mention)

Twins Daily 2023 Prospect Rankings (Part 1: Honorable Mention)
roger replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
Thanks for doing this, Seth. Perhaps your most interesting comment was that there are several future big leaguers in this group. Would be like going to a casino and rolling the dice to pick out who they are, but yes, there will be a few who will rise to the top and make it. Hardest thing I had when reading this was to keep reminding myself that playing at Cedar Rapids and Wichitia didn't mean a player jumped one entire level. Seth, when you mentioned the veteran catchers the Twins signed, didn't they also sign Tony Wolters? He is a 30 year old who had played parts of four or five years with the Rockies. Great seeing them pick up several to play at St. Paul and are available to be added when/if either Jeffers or Vasquez gets injured. Also great having veterans in St. Paul to work with all the young pitchers.- 38 replies

Twins Timeline for Prospects in 2023
roger replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I believe that Prielipp will be the next Chris Sale. He didn't play at all in his draft year, thus, it is less likely that he debuts for the Twins this year as Sale did for the Sox in his first full year. Thus, I see him breaking in early in 2024. But there is a chance, albeit small, that Connor Prielipp will step onto the Target Field mound late in 2023.- 24 replies

The Twins Need to be Realistic With Max Kepler
roger replied to Cody Pirkl's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I am amongst the few who believe that the shift change will be huge for Max. And I don't say that because a lot more of his ground balls will become hits. Rather, it will be a psychological change of how he approaches his at bats. He will no longer be going to the plate thinking that no matter what he does he is going to be out with what appears as the entire team between first and second. Yes, he could have, or even should have, learned how to defeat the shift by bunting and going to left field. But for whatever reason, he didn't. Now he will be going into 2023 knowing that defenders need to play where they did historically. I expect he is going to become more of the hitter we saw in 2019, ie, will be hitting the ball harder and with more elevation. The results just may, note I wrote may, be surprising. And yes, I expect Max to be the Twins regular right fielder come opening day. With their outfield depth, Max and all outfielders will get more time off. Hopefully, the Manager will be smart about who plays and when?- 69 replies

Twins Know Winning Trumps Fun in Dealing Arraez
roger replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
The success of this trade will be based on how two players perform in 2023 and beyond. First, will Lopez be at least a solid #2? And second, how will AK perform as hopefully, their starting first baseman? If finally healthy, he can push the results of this trade onto the positive side of the ledger.- 15 replies

2023 Prospect Previews: Connor Prielipp
roger replied to Jamie Cameron's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
Can Prielipp meet my expectations? Unlikely. Why? Because I believe he will be the next Chris Sale, who joined the White Sox late in the year following his draft. And the rest is history. Considering Prielipp is returning from TJ, will give him until May of 2024 to pitch for the Twins. You obviously don't know much about Tomah, Jamie. It is in the middle of one of the most productive areas in the country for growing cranberries. It is the home of the Army's Fort McCoy. Another base, Camp Douglas, the home of the Wisconsin Air Guard and a State Trooper training center is also only a few miles away. Don't know if it still there, but there used to be a local steak place that served huge steaks for well under $10...but that was 50 years ago. -

Will be shocked if Larnach isn't on the opening day roster with Celestino in St. Paul. Would be best, for both players. Also don't see Ober in St. Paul. Expect they are going to be careful with Maeda's innings. See him missing every fourth or fifth start and having a few short 2-3 inning starts as well. Ober is the best guy to have in the pen as a long inning reliever who is scheduled to pick up those missed starts/innings. They may also have Mahle miss a few starts during the year. Now should Varland or SWR force their way onto the team, Ober could be the odd man out. Also see Winder winning a spot as a multi-inning reliever. Who that forces out remains to be seen? Does Megill have options? Does Pagan get traded and all of Twins Territory is elated? Or does Pagan finally put it together and is the surprise of the spring?

Twins Acquire Gold-Glove Outfielder from Royals
roger replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I think we learned a lot by this move. First, I liked the potential Sisk had. As confirmed by the Rule 5 draft, appears nobody in baseball with a hell of a lot more knowledge than I did. Second, We don't know what type of player Celestino will become. We do know that he arrived way too early and now will have a chance to develop at St. Paul. Third, Look for Buxton to now get a lot of days at DH. In the past, when he was at DH our outfield D took a big hit. With the departure of Arraez last week, who would be our primary DH was the biggest unknown on the team. With a top defender now on the roster, look for Buxton to DH about half the time. Should that get him to 130-140 games this year, this will have been a FANTASTIC trade.- 87 replies

Excellent comment, Riverbrian. My hope is that the Twins know something we don't. And that is the status of AK's recovery. No one will know until spring training, but his bat could go a long way to offsetting Arraez' bat. And he would be a noticeable improvement defensively. They have lots of others who could have a better 2023, but AK may be the most important when looking for someone to offset the loss of Luis.
-
When I saw the Twins had traded Arraez I felt like that guy walking down the steet when he met someone who without warning punched him in the gut. Punched him so hard he was on the ground gasping for air. That's what the Twins did to me. After sleeping on it, I now understand it. Don't like it, but understand. My biggest concern was the bullpen, but there are now going to be a couple very good starters in the pen. Will it be Ober? Maeda? Someone else? Don't know, but their pen just got stronger. Starting rotation just got stronger. And we all know what Tom Kelly used to say about starting pitchers. But I still will ask who the heck is going to get on base? Who is going to work the pitcher to a 10+ pitch at bat. Who will give me the joy I had every time Luis came to bat. I guess the good news is that in 2023 the Twins will play the Marlins a couple games and I will get to watch my favorite Twin in action.
