  1. That is what will be fun about this offseason. All of us as fans are going in with the hope of upgrading the team. I personally want Castro as I think he will help the pitching staff while also producing a little bit on the offensive side. That said, who knows what direction this front office is going to go. They may look at Murphy and Garver and Turner and everyone else in our current stable of catching prospects and say that none of them are cut out to be in the big leagues, so they could then go out and acquire another catcher to pair with Castro. I don't know what they will do, and that's why I am excited to see what unfolds.
  2. Here is Castro's stat line from last year when he only faced right handed pitching... 231/331/426 for a .757 OPS. That is really good for a catcher especially. He also had a 12.9% walk rate, something this team could absolutely use more of. He was not good against left handed starters. He hit lefties (as a right handed hitter) to the tune of 149/237/241, with an ops of .478. If Castro starts the majority of games (because there are more right handed pitchers in baseball than left handed) and is paired with another catcher who can hit lefties well, the catching position will be just fine on the offensive side of the ball. What Castro brings to the table in terms of defense and pitch framing makes this a no brainer.
  3. They can sign Castro and not break the bank doing it, and also if Garver or Murphy play and earn time, then they will play. The coaches have seen both of them and scouted both of them for years. If they are not ready, they are not ready. Garver isn't going to magically become Johnny Bench by playing in the pros when he hasn't shown enough in the minors to earn a call-up yet. Plus, you realize, they can spend 20-30 million on Castro, and still not even get close to the amount of resources they have to pursue pitching in every/all avenues. Pursuing a major league caliber catcher (which they don't currently have) doesn't mean they can't also pursue pitching.
  4. The Twins want to find a starting catcher who can help their pitching staff and help be at least average defensively. They don't currently have that guy on the roster. We aren't looking at adding Johnny Bench through free agency, but getting a guy who can help the pitching staff grow and develop, while costing not all that much in terms of current day free agency is a no brainer. Just punting free agency and hoping for the best doesn't always solve everything. I'm not saying Jason Castro is a savior, but I absolutely believe having Castro catch 110 games next year will help in terms of runs allowed and pitcher ERA. Why is that a bad thing? And I would absolutely give Castro a fair contract compared to what others receive in free agency. If that is 12 million or 14 million (or more) per year, whatever it is, the Twins and major league baseball absolutely have the resources to acquire a player that will help their team both in 2017 and for the future. Hopefully he would be able to teach other catchers in the system something about pitch framing as well.
  5. I absolutely disagree with this. Someone like Castro can come in and help the young pitching staff improve over the next two years or so (maybe 3) and then he can also help work with Murphy/Garver etc. It's not like the catcher position is only one guy. But, trusting every single position on your team to young players, especially when they don't have quality veterans to look up to and work with, that doesn't help. Centeno does not belong on a MLB roster.
  6. Garver has had concussion issues (who hasn't, especially if you are a catcher) but he only managed to play in 60 games in 2016 at catcher, and only 77 games in 2015. I hope he can make it as well, but absolutely counting on him to be a full time savior for this time is folly. They NEED to address the position with someone from the outside, and Castro would be an excellent choice.
  7. I don't see why signing Castro would also mean the Twins are giving up on Murphy? Couldn't they work together (or Garver?) as a good tandem? The Cubs used 3 catchers (not that, it always works) but it's not like one guy can catch more than 100-120 games a year in today's game any longer while staying productive.
  8. I was hoping for people that potentially still have potential.
  9. If we are talking buy low trade candidates, what do people think it would take to acquire Taijuan Walker of the Mariners?
  10. Bucholz could be a good buy low candidate too. No argument there.
  11. I'd absolutely trade for him and let him make 15-20 starts (if healthy) and then the Twins can absolutely net something better for him at the deadline than they would be trading for him this offseason. That would be the reason to pick him up. Course, if he isn't healthy, it's a wash. That's the worst that can happen.
  12. I don't know, maybe I'm more bullish on him than I should be, but I absolutely have Buxton over Sano, at least for future overall value. Maybe I'm wrong.
  13. The national domestic violence hotline is 1.800.799.7233. Locally in the Twin Cities, Tubman is an advocate for domestic violence, and their 24 hour domestic violence line is 612.825.0000. If you are in need of help or resources, or know someone that may be in need of resources, please pass these phone numbers along.
  14. From Keith Law's chat today... Zach: Encouraged by you blurb on Nick Gordon, is there anything you can expand on regarding what looked good to you? Any chance we'll see him in MN in 2018? Keith Law: That's probably the absolute earliest, but I'd bet 2019. He's a good player who just really knows the game - his instincts everywhere are readily apparent. I don't think he will ever be flashy like Dee, but he's a better all-around player for me.
  15. The other Gibson/Rockies thread, there were people in that thread not believing that talks ever happened with the Rockies and Gibson.
  16. I would argue Rosario over Pat Light, but that's just me
  17. FYI, Florida is playing at Vanderbilt April 13, 14 and 15. I don't know if I could make that trip with two young kids at home, but that would certainly be a fun road trip with the possibility of seeing 4 of the top potential picks in the draft (Faedo, Schwarz on Florida and Wright and Kendall on Vanderbilt. Plus Nashville is a pretty fun town, or so I have heard.
  18. Just because a trade for prospects didn't work once doesn't mean you wouldn't do that again. I want to believe that Falvey and company would know the types of players they are looking for, and would acquire players that at some point they believe could help the major league roster. If that means a top 50 prospect and a couple of other lower level pitchers, or even a top 50 prospect who is a year or so away along with someone who has had a cup of coffee in the majors and is ready to be in the rotation, I am good with that. They will be able to acquire talent for Dozier, and they should definitely do that.
  19. Jason Castro and his elite level framing skills would be an ENORMOUS upgrade at the catcher spot. Suzuki was so awful at that skill (as well as blocking pitches) that the Twins may not realize how bad they have had it for years until someone comes in who can play competently. Aaron Gleeman mentioned it in his recent podcast, but he could see the Twins saying their starter and backup catcher are not currently in the organization. Unless Murphy can turn it around (which I think he will) I am good with that possibility. Catcher is a position that the Twins ABSOLUTELY need an upgrade.
  20. If Escobar is 100% healthy I am totally on board with him being the SS opening day ongoing. He just, well, he didn't play this year like someone who is healthy. I'm hoping for the best for him, but we'll see.
  21. But with whip, the higher number is worse. Isn't a higher number for range factor generally a good thing?
  22. I am not very up on what it measures then, I assumed it did it's best to measure range, or what balls a player is able to get to. What does it measure?
  23. I don't know for certain that any players have been decided on which position they are going to play next year. Falvey is in charge now for roster configuration. What in the world would he put a guy back at SS that was such a trainwreck last year? I mean, maybe Polanco does get a LOT better this offseason to get anywhere close to league average (and that would take a LOT of progress) but with the (hopeful/probable) trade of Dozier to strengthen an area of weakness elsewhere (pitching/catching) wouldn't just sliding Polanco over to his more natural position make sense?
