  1. But even if a catcher can hold their own offensively, if pitch framing and defense are the most important aspects of the catcher position, then are you really ok with one of these guys being the starter? I mean, Geovany Soto was almost league average (-1.0) but even JR Murphy was higher than that, in terms of pitch framing. Avila and Iannetta were far worse than even Suzuki was in that regard.
  2. If we look at JUST pitch framing stats (something I think Falvey will say is important for his catchers) of this tier, Jeff Mathis is the only one who ranked as above average last year with the Marlins. He, at 4.4, is pretty well above average, and I'd be ok throwing him a 1 year deal if the Twins miss out on Castro and/or don't trade for someone else. http://www.statcorner.com/CatcherReport.php Mathis is pretty poor offensively. His 3% walk rate last year makes even Eddie Rosario look good. But, as a backup catcher (are we comfortable having Garver/Murphy be the starter?) he would help mentor on pitch framing at least. That said, I'm still on the sign-Castro train. Hopefully that works out.
  3. Yeah, didn't you say he is having surgery soon and out all year?
  4. I don't understand why you would keep Zack Jones and not Engelb Vielma; simply for his glove he could have a spot somewhere. Jones on the other hand already has been picked and returned; do the Twins really lose much if they lose Jones a 2nd time?
  5. I liked this article. Thank you for posting it. There is always hope. I don't know if the Twins will allow for Rosario and Plouffe to get the available playing time to fully bounce back. If they sign a veteran outfielder, don't you think Rosario is the one to take a platoon/bench spot? And Plouffe, I don't know how much I believe he will be on the team come April, but we'll see. If he is healthy he can contribute, but at what cost to the rest of the roster?
  6. Unless you want to get Soto and pair him with Castro? Soto does hit lefties really well for his career, something Castro does not. Then the twins could give more time to Murphy and Garver in aaa.
  7. I don't see what Geovany Soto adds to this team, other than he was born near the same place in the world that Berrios was. I would be disappointed if this were the twins offseason
  8. That is what will be fun about this offseason. All of us as fans are going in with the hope of upgrading the team. I personally want Castro as I think he will help the pitching staff while also producing a little bit on the offensive side. That said, who knows what direction this front office is going to go. They may look at Murphy and Garver and Turner and everyone else in our current stable of catching prospects and say that none of them are cut out to be in the big leagues, so they could then go out and acquire another catcher to pair with Castro. I don't know what they will do, and that's why I am excited to see what unfolds.
  9. Here is Castro's stat line from last year when he only faced right handed pitching... 231/331/426 for a .757 OPS. That is really good for a catcher especially. He also had a 12.9% walk rate, something this team could absolutely use more of. He was not good against left handed starters. He hit lefties (as a right handed hitter) to the tune of 149/237/241, with an ops of .478. If Castro starts the majority of games (because there are more right handed pitchers in baseball than left handed) and is paired with another catcher who can hit lefties well, the catching position will be just fine on the offensive side of the ball. What Castro brings to the table in terms of defense and pitch framing makes this a no brainer.
  10. They can sign Castro and not break the bank doing it, and also if Garver or Murphy play and earn time, then they will play. The coaches have seen both of them and scouted both of them for years. If they are not ready, they are not ready. Garver isn't going to magically become Johnny Bench by playing in the pros when he hasn't shown enough in the minors to earn a call-up yet. Plus, you realize, they can spend 20-30 million on Castro, and still not even get close to the amount of resources they have to pursue pitching in every/all avenues. Pursuing a major league caliber catcher (which they don't currently have) doesn't mean they can't also pursue pitching.
  11. The Twins want to find a starting catcher who can help their pitching staff and help be at least average defensively. They don't currently have that guy on the roster. We aren't looking at adding Johnny Bench through free agency, but getting a guy who can help the pitching staff grow and develop, while costing not all that much in terms of current day free agency is a no brainer. Just punting free agency and hoping for the best doesn't always solve everything. I'm not saying Jason Castro is a savior, but I absolutely believe having Castro catch 110 games next year will help in terms of runs allowed and pitcher ERA. Why is that a bad thing? And I would absolutely give Castro a fair contract compared to what others receive in free agency. If that is 12 million or 14 million (or more) per year, whatever it is, the Twins and major league baseball absolutely have the resources to acquire a player that will help their team both in 2017 and for the future. Hopefully he would be able to teach other catchers in the system something about pitch framing as well.
  12. I absolutely disagree with this. Someone like Castro can come in and help the young pitching staff improve over the next two years or so (maybe 3) and then he can also help work with Murphy/Garver etc. It's not like the catcher position is only one guy. But, trusting every single position on your team to young players, especially when they don't have quality veterans to look up to and work with, that doesn't help. Centeno does not belong on a MLB roster.
  13. Garver has had concussion issues (who hasn't, especially if you are a catcher) but he only managed to play in 60 games in 2016 at catcher, and only 77 games in 2015. I hope he can make it as well, but absolutely counting on him to be a full time savior for this time is folly. They NEED to address the position with someone from the outside, and Castro would be an excellent choice.
  14. I don't see why signing Castro would also mean the Twins are giving up on Murphy? Couldn't they work together (or Garver?) as a good tandem? The Cubs used 3 catchers (not that, it always works) but it's not like one guy can catch more than 100-120 games a year in today's game any longer while staying productive.
  15. I was hoping for people that potentially still have potential.
  16. If we are talking buy low trade candidates, what do people think it would take to acquire Taijuan Walker of the Mariners?
  17. Bucholz could be a good buy low candidate too. No argument there.
  18. I'd absolutely trade for him and let him make 15-20 starts (if healthy) and then the Twins can absolutely net something better for him at the deadline than they would be trading for him this offseason. That would be the reason to pick him up. Course, if he isn't healthy, it's a wash. That's the worst that can happen.
  19. I don't know, maybe I'm more bullish on him than I should be, but I absolutely have Buxton over Sano, at least for future overall value. Maybe I'm wrong.

  21. From Keith Law's chat today... Zach: Encouraged by you blurb on Nick Gordon, is there anything you can expand on regarding what looked good to you? Any chance we'll see him in MN in 2018? Keith Law: That's probably the absolute earliest, but I'd bet 2019. He's a good player who just really knows the game - his instincts everywhere are readily apparent. I don't think he will ever be flashy like Dee, but he's a better all-around player for me.
  22. The other Gibson/Rockies thread, there were people in that thread not believing that talks ever happened with the Rockies and Gibson.
