Hypothetical thought exercise
Cory Engelhardt replied to Cory Engelhardt's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
You know, IF the Twins actually do turn it around and are just buyers and this thread means nothing, I'd be open to the idea of looking still at Jeffers to the Yankees for JC Escarra and then a pitching prospect they like. Escarra is a decent enough defensive option and does still have 2 option years left after this one. Depending on the prospect coupled with him, I'd be open to that kind of an idea. It would hurt for the rest of the season, but at the same time the team is playing well without Jeffers too. Ok, so changing gears then; IF they are more buying than selling, what level of prospect coupled with Escarra would still make you agree to trade Jeffers in the next month and change? -
I'd truly be shocked/surprised if they do trade him now. He is team controlled and cheap for a long time (that's assuming there IS a 2027 season, and who knows what the cba will look like whenever there are games again) but he was available a month ago and every team passed on him. What kind of return would be needed to flip him now? I'd imagine more than most teams would want to give.
-
I'd be curious if agents truly want to talk extensions right now with anyone. The mess that is coming with the end of this cba and not knowing if there will be a salary floor or not whenever baseball does start again after this season makes extensions extremely confusing I'd have to imagine. And that's even IF he would want to sign here.

I can’t imagine a world where Yoendry is traded now. I also can’t see a world where Royce is moved. Ober? Why isn’t he listed?

Ok, here is a hypothetical that I would love your thoughts on... Trade deadline coming up. My GUESS is that they will trade Ryan, Jeffers and Larnach all that the height of their value. I could see Ober being in the discussion too, but for now I'm only talking the first 3. I ALSO think they could still be in playoff discussion, so Tom being the way he is, it's POSSIBLE they also add a reliever. Not certain who that is. My question for you is; let's say they do trade Jeffers and Ryan in separate deals, as well as Larnach. I THINK Alan Roden will be up soon to take over Larnach's spot, but otherwise, IF they trade Jeffers, they will need a catcher ongoing and into 2027. Based on both A) Who is winning this year, and B) Who would want Ryan, my question is, what teams would be able to make a trade happen that have a good defensive catcher available who can break into the majors either immediately or early in 2027? Off the top of my head, that's... 1) St. Louis, they have options 2) Milwaukee, if Jeferson Quero is fully healthy After that, help me out. What team can offer a strong package with a mlb ready catcher for Joe Ryan? That's my hypothetical. Honestly, off the top of my head, Milwaukee would be my favorite as they could offer Quero, maybe Luis Pena and probably a pitcher. But I'd love to hear your thoughts. Then after that, Jeffers could be moved somewhere for what essentially would top the QO draft pick return for the 2027 draft IF they were to QO him. What do you all think?
-
I can actually see that being a decent option IF there is a 2027 season. Their payroll is going to be SO LOW next year regardless, and no such thing as a bad 1 year deal for the most part. Just saying, if you trade him, you have to get AT LEAST the value of the comp pick he would bring back by being offered the QO no? Can't trade him for less.
-
Agreed here, it's time to move him up in some capacity.

Couple of things; 1) IF Ryan isn't in the rotation to start next year, I have to think someone comes back via trade that will be. 2) Riley Quick is closer to this discussion, in my opinion, than we are giving credit for. Not for 2026, but for 2027. I hope there is a 2027 season.

Agreed completely. If they can go into 2027 (if there is a season) with any semblance of truly being able to write the infield out in pen more than pencil, I'll take that as a win regardless. The draft being before the trade deadline will also be interesting. Makes me think IF they get Lackey or Cholowsky, then they wouldn't necessarily prioritize trade assets coming back at those positions who are on similar timelines. But I am also someone who likes to read WAY TOO MUCH into things at times, so we'll see.
-
Keaschall could be 1b or in left field just fine. Agreed with the other posters; if Cholowsky is at 3 then that cements who the SS will be going forward most likely. And I do think Culpepper will have a home with how strong he can be defensively at either 3b or 2b. I guess we'll see then between Lewis and Lee who sticks longer, but IF all of that works and everyone is healthy, Lee being a super utility also fits well. Lots of ifs, but Houston hitting a bit and providing strong defense at SS is a good problem otherwise.
-
I don't at all love his defense. Maybe as a DH, otherwise I'd just prefer to wait for Jenkins to eventually get healthy.

I'll throw 1B in as an option too. But if he can hit, they find a position for him after that point.

Watch, there is a world where both Lackey and Roch are available at 3. @Jamie CameronDo you have a preference in that scenario?

1) Trade Joe Ryan for a few very good young playes, probably a starting pitcher and a position player, and maybe another prospect further away. The return may sound similar to the Duran return, but with any luck they actually pick the right players. 2) Trade Bailey Ober for a starting pitcher prospect. Wish him well. 3) Extend Ryan Jeffers 4) Extend Pablo Lopez 5) Push Culpepper and Jenkins up. Let's see what we have. 6) If there are other non-core guys going forward, also trade them. In the offseason 1) Acquire a middle of the order type bat 2) Acquire an actual reliever or 2 3) Hopefully have a 2027 season. 4) Profit

Joe Ryan and the Elephant in the Room
Cory Engelhardt replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
See, I'm not certain that Lee is a full time starter at one set position.. He very well could be a utility guy. And if the Twins do like Ramirez more than they like Shaw, maybe that's the path then. I do think the Dodgers, and probably most teams, view pitching differently than we on this board do. Heck, when the Twins traded Nelson Cruz, did anyone actually think that Joe Ryan would become what he did? I certainly didn't. If they do make a trade with Boston, I'd also love Kyson Witherspoon. He's had a rough year numbers wise but I loved him at Oklahoma last year. And if you can get a player like Walcott, maybe you just make it work and figure out details later. We haven't touched on 1B or C though as options, let alone sure-fire SS's. A true SS that puts Culpepper at 2B or 3B would be nice. And a true 1B who can be a middle of the order bat (if there is one out there) would also pique my interest. But yeah, you can never have too much pitching. -

I think a few teams could offer interesting options. The Cubs could start with Matt Shaw as an option right? The Dodgers certainly have tons of options, including young pitching that's not far off. Even Boston could start with a few of their younger guys who aren't FAR away. Texas could also arguably put a decent proposal together. I guess we'll see. -

Came here to say, a few years back Detroit traded Jack Flaherty for a good prospect return AND still made the playoffs. I'm not saying this to say the Twins will make the playoffs. But if they do get a strong return for Ryan, that's not necessarily a bad thing. With how their starting rotation is shaping up, they can trade someone now who can bring a strong return and still be ok. That's especially true if he won't be extended here. Plus, is anyone else certain that he can ever have a full and healthy season? I suppose that's the same for every pitcher ever. Let's just say they get a good pitching prospect who is either at AA/AAA or already had a cup of coffee, along with a really good hitting prospect. Something stronger than what Duran brought back. Why would that be a bad thing when A) We don't know if there is a 2027 season and B) he probably won't be extended anyway. I'm good with it, is basically what I'm saying.
