  1. Well, this pretty much confirms that a stint with the Twins is enough to make even an all-star pitcher want to quit the game entirely. Yes, this could be a quip, or a hasty comment or even a joke. But when I see this lifeless, gutless, heartless team take the field, I do often wonder if there's a serious culture problem here. This comment doesn't exactly dispel that notion.
  2. C'mon Joe Kendall Roy Pohlad, shake things up! Too much complacency over failure and mediocrity. What do you stand to lose by firing Baldelli, Tingler and Hopkins? This team likely won't make the playoffs anyways. If anything, you'll generate a little fan interest - AND you'll send a real message that things will be run differently for this organization.
  3. I won't speak for Garv, but my answer is yes. I don't need any more talk from this team at this point. Talk is for the offseason. There comes a point when "owning up" to one's ongoing failures is just a self-protection ritual. I don't care to hear a single member of this organization speak any further about the team's shortcomings. They either find ways to win or they don't.
  4. "Let the season begin" is considered a blunt message?! I don't know the person who tweeted that phrase, but I question the frame they've given that weakest of whiteboard motivational phrases. And maybe that's indicative of the larger problem - a manager who doesn't understand how to get results in a market filled with reporters and/or fans who don't understand direct feedback. "Your jobs are on the line" is a blunt message. It might do a bit more good than anything Rocco has said at this point.
  5. Solid write-up of a tough situation. Glad you're still covering the Twins. Nash, you strike me as a pretty passionate fan but also a sober enough critic. What do you think - do you think this FO deserves just a bit more patience, or do you think it's time to push for a new direction?
  6. Well, it would send a rare shiver of actual accountability through the organization. Don't produce results, don't stay employed here. I know, that's a unfamiliar concept for the Twins.
  7. That's a quality cherry you've picked. Good one. Meanwhile, the Francona-led Guardians are now in first place. (Yes, I know he's briefly on medical leave - maybe that gave his team even more of a push). Look, no one manager can lead any miserable team to a championship. BUT ... I'd like to think that a team gifted with high-profile veterans, peppered with promising prospects and led by one of the strongest rotations in the game might be able to find themselves above .500. Rocco's team can't. In fact, they can't even seem to find the energy to play a full game. It's not just that they Twins are losing, but how. And that at least lends itself to reasonable questions about coaching and culture.
  8. "I'm counting on it." Okay, but please don't bet on it.
  9. A little late to make these changes now. 7-8 wins have already been left on the table. However, better late than never. But I can't see it happening. Falvey/Levine seem to see their coaches as a direct extension of everything they've built. Popkins is "cutting edge." I think they think that's it's just a matter of time until everything clicks and they're revealed as the baseball geniuses they believe themselves to be.. Only, it hasn't clicked and won't click. And then the pressure mounts on the other players. And then injuries are more common. And then the FO can just blame another lost season on bad luck and fluke injuries. Lather, rinse, repeat.
  10. I don't hate on Rocco, certainly not for being professional or thoughtful. I merely hate having him as the Twins manager. He's not a leader of men. Go back and watch the "egg toss" episode of the Twins spring promotional videos. Rocco is a college student activities coordinator. He's not big league coach material. You can tell that the players are barely listening to him when he talks. And he says a lot, but very little with clarity or emphasis.
  11. No, I think he merely let them have a "players only" meeting. Besides, does this sound like Rocco? I can't even imagine him tearing into a bag of chips.
  12. Rocco is all talk. Coaches are lost. They have no clue how to improve the at-bats or the team culture. None.
  13. Believe me, I am more than fine with a FO upheaval. But $140M payroll. Correa signed in the offseason. High-profile catcher added. Gold-glove caliber OFs added. Rocco was gifted a solid rotation staff and even blessed with a miserable division. C'mon - his team has underperformed even when healthy. Rocco is also a huge part of the problem here.
  14. Might have been much better for the Twins to choose Torey Lovullo, eh? Another FO mistake.
  15. Not. Reading his postgame rambling, it's clear he doesn't even have a clue about what to do next. It's almost as though he doesn't even realize he's the manager. Whoever could be responsible for a team "doing the same stuff over and over again" - possibly a manager who perpetually praises the prescribed process over actual results? Nah. And the word "maybe" in the fourth sentence borders on hilarity. Reads like a Randball's Stu article. Good gracious, this team is in trouble. “This is a challenge. This is an ultimatum for our team. We’re here. These guys work their freakin’ (tails) off every day, but maybe we’ve got to work our (tails) off in a different way and have a different approach and a different mindset when we step out on the field 'cause really what we’re doing right now is frustrating because that’s madness going out there and doing the same stuff over and over and over again when we have guys that have shown either for periods of time or for their whole careers to be productive players to be falling flat as a group right now."
  16. Systems are more likely to change people than people are likely to change systems. You nailed it. Signs continue to point to something rotten here in terms of culture, philosophy and execution.
  17. I value this ethos, but mostly for everyday working folks. MLB managerial and coaching slots should be for the best of the best of the best. Yes, results are the ultimate performance evaluation in this line of work. Or so you'd think.
  18. No. They've talked plenty. Correa "takes the blame" every time a microphone is put into his face. There is literally nothing to say at this point. Stop talking. Start playing. Lead by example. Who would take any stock in anything chronic underperformers like Correa or Vasquez would say anyways? Can you imagine being Lewis, Kirilloff or Jeffers, lectured to by Carlos "Double-Play" Correa? No thank you. If there's talk to be had, the players should go to the FO and demand a better coaching staff.
  19. We're on 3.0 at this point.
  20. It's odd - when the team is good and they're in the fight, I watch/listen less often because the games get me nervous. I live and die on each pitch. But, when the team is unlikeable and/or inept, I like to listen because losses don't bother me. I just enjoy the games, and I root for the younger players. I've tuned them out lately, but I think I'll be listening to a lot more games come July. Since May, they've been one of the worst 2-3 teams in the American League. I expect that will continue through the summer.
  21. Agreed. They constantly appear overmatched for the decision at hand. They have way too much patience with gaps, then realize they're in some sort of hole and then make panicked moves that backfire.
  22. Here's what's scary - trades 1, 3 and 5 have the potential of looking considerably worse than they do right now. If Arraez wins MVP trophies and leads Miami deep into the playoffs, this is a trade that can (and should) break a front office.
  23. I appreciate what you're doing here, but this just seems like Minnesota Nice on steroids. Sorry, PEDs - Politeness Enhancing Delusions. Bless the man's heart, but he has no business being on the Twins. He cost the Padres a season in 2021. He cost the Twins a season in 2022. He has the worst current case of yips in professional sports. This FO has made many errors, but keeping Pagan is one of their worst.
