  1. For a full-time position, sure Julien is the answer if the SSS is to be believed (I'm about 75% convinced). As the last guy on the squad, his versatility plays pretty well.
  2. I hope it's not solely Farmer, but that would mean Castro makes the team. The downside is that Larnach should be playing against right handers and there's not really a place for him.
  3. Miranda played first in a minor league game and last night he played first against Boston. Pretty certain he's available to play there. However, he hasn't played an inning of third this spring. Just like with Polanco and Kirilloff, time is running short (or running out) for Miranda to play third. He does have plenty of experience at third, though.
  4. There's a wall between pitchers and position players. Whether Ober makes the team or not, there will be 13 pitchers and 13 position players on the active roster a week from today in Kansas City. 40-man moves might have to be made. The Twins currently have one vacancy on the 40-man. If Pagan and Cole Sands are the choices to fill out the pitching staff, they could use that vacancy to select either Castro or Garlick. However, if they decide to bring up a non-roster pitcher (most often thought to be Hoffman), then they will have to make a 40-man move to add a position player, probably placing Henriqez (or perhaps Celestino) on the 60-day IL.
  5. Usually when a pitcher returns from TJ surgery, they get most or all of their velocity back and Maeda is close to that, but what lags is the command. If Kenta is not putting the ball close to exactly where he wants, his stuff becomes very hittable. That seems to be the case so far. He looks like the fifth starter on this squad and I don't think his leash will be very long. I wouldn't want to make too many final judgments based on spring training results, however.
  6. Having veteran guys to serve as the last two guys on the bench is the right move IMHO. The Twins will go through a lot of players and if probably guys who are now prospects will get chances later. The last two guys in the bullpen and the last two position players aren’t going to stay the same all year.
  7. They will make a space if they have to--I think the space will be provided by Henriquez--and Hoffman does have the inside track with his opt-out.
  8. This highlights factors outside performance on the field. Coulombe isn't on the roster and has no options. Ortega isn't on the 40-man, but would have an option if he got on the roster. Hoffman isn't on the roster and doesn't have options, but has opt-outs. Both Castro and Garlick aren't on the 40-man, but Castro can be optioned. I concur with DocBauer, the choices should be Hoffman and Castro. It also figures Castro becomes more useful if Miranda can't play third base.
  9. I think there are a couple more pitchers with a chance. Danny Coulombe and Oliver Ortiz have a case. I think one of Garlick or Castro will make it. Castro has an option that can be used if the team gets Polanco and Kirilloff (presumed IL) back soon.
  10. Eight days for Pagan to pitch his way off the Opening Day roster. I'd much prefer to take a chance on a non-roster invitee.
  11. Really versatile and a switch hitter without obvious platoon splits. He's a below-average hitter, but he can help the team in a lot of ways, including being a threat on the bases. I think the continued throwing problems for Miranda might improve Willi's chances. On top of all that, Willi is probably every bit as good an outfielder as Gordon, with ample experience in right field (Nick has only played a few innings there).
  12. If AK starts on the IL and Miranda still is having throwing issues, Miranda might be the starting first baseman or DH with Farmer or Castro at third.
  13. I think Gordon is the better option at second versus right handed pitching. Farmer should always be in the lineup against lefties, but his splits against right handers are pedestrian at best.
  14. I’m a Castro backer, but more for what he has offered rather than expecting him to hit like he has in Florida. He’s young (turning 26 next month), versatile and a switch hitter with some speed.
  15. SSS on Julien’s numbers in spring training and the WBC. A stint at St. Paul will probably provide evidence of when he will make his debut. He’ll get his chance probably sooner than later.
  16. Castro has an option year. Once he is on the 40-man he can go to St. Paul on that option.
  17. I think Larnach will have a lot of left field time until Alex Kirilloff demonstrates he is healthy. I'm pretty sure he'll be on the IL for a while.
  18. Counting the shortened 2020 season, Farmer has an .880 OPS vs. lefties and his career OPS is .837, better than Joe Mauer and Justin Morneau vs. LHP. I'd venture to say that the outlier on his splits was 2021.
  19. For a guy who has been a regular, Farmer has pretty dramatic platoon splits. He should be in the lineup against every left handed starter. Gordon also has substantial platoon splits. A platoon there until Polanco returns should happen. Kirilloff has quite a few steps to go through given his injury history, the nature of his injury and “unproveness” of his ability IMHO. I think he has to show he can play most every day, drive the ball and play through any discomfort he might be experiencing. Can he prove all of that in ten days? I’m not sure. I still believe he can be an All-Star so I don’t want the team to give up on him.
  20. He hasn’t been impressive thus far. Solano has been a solid hitter for the last four years, but he’s 35. Sometimes players that age fall off a cliff. I would give him 40-50 ABs in the regular season. Most likely by then he’ll be “Donnie barrels”, if not, see ‘ya.
  21. This is just from reading PBP on GameDay, but there were at least four singles recorded as infield hits to second while Gordon was there. Not seeing the plays, is Gordon not turning possible outs into outs? The two earlier games I saw him on TV at second, he looked rough.
  22. I don't think there is a great deal of difference between Larnach's defense and Gallo's. Larnach was excellent (SSS) last season and he's experienced in both Target Field corners. Gallo has played first previously and worked at the position in the spring. I think he'll be fine there. We are talking about two of the lower positions on the defensive spectrum.
