  1. The Twins are probably not looking for starting pitching. Many people on Twins Daily are looking for the Twins to add starting pitching. Joe Ryan is really good and still learning.
  2. If Baltimore wants to trade us their catcher that would be wonderful, but be careful what you wish for because there are many worse options than Vazquez at catcher. Yan Gomes anyone? Who pines for Mitch Garver behind the plate?
  3. Great writeup; always enjoy all of your work. Leaning toward position players for the first three picks unless a top pitcher falls into their laps.
  4. Sometimes people get totally exasperated by Max Kepler and just want him to disappear because their disappointment has reached a break level. We have all seen this before and yet he is still a mainstay in the lineup and in the middle of some exciting wins. Maybe those who boil over because of Max need to take a few minutes off when he come to the plate, at least for their own personal mental health. It isn't very rational to get so dramatic about a baseball player who is good but not as good as one expects. Either that or try finding enjoyment in his smooth approach and demeanor for the next three plus months. After October Max is gone, even if the Twins extend a QO which I personally do not expect to occur.
  5. When a pitcher throws the ball someone has to catch it. Seems simple but catcher is a position by some multiples much more difficult to fill than any other position in baseball. No other position has anywhere near the demands, either physically or mentally. As someone who played primarily as a pitcher but also at every other position at one time or another, I suggest it is crucial to have a decent catcher. Let's not take the steady contributions by our catching tandem for granted because we want more offense from the spot. Offense is for the other eleven. If one were to ask any of the Twins pitchers about the value of the catcher they would give you a sideways eye and chuckle, because they all know how important that guy behind the mask is to their success.
  6. The Twins do not need Vazquez to hit. They do need good defense from him. He has another year and a half on his contract. If the Twins are winning, it is not too important to stress about Vazquez, and the Twins are currently winning more than their preseason projected numbers.
  7. Timely article because both players look like they are making their case for more prominent roles. Miranda, particularly, is making life miserable for opposing pitchers with his ability to foul off difficult pitches as he sifts through the offerings waiting for one to hit on a line.
  8. Get up and get a beverage; skip his turns at the plate. Perhaps your pain will subside.
  9. Well, despite my support via comments on Twins Daily for all four of the players you name, they are all actually AAA players and not ready to play at the level we see from Max Kepler at this time. We may see Lee for Farmer at some point but even that is a tough decision because Miranda has placed himself into the everyday lineup, Santana continues to perform, Lewis will get at bats for sure, Larnach has shown his worth, and Castro is critical to the team. Tough to see a change right now without an injury.
  10. A very successful week and a tough week ahead. Keep pitching and the bats will find a way.
  11. Off day tomorrow so it was pretty much a given that Correa gets the day in the dugout. Time for a few of the pups (Larnach, Lewis, & Martin) to have a strong showing. Ryan is usually pretty solid. It has been a decent road trip and a win today would top off the travel.
  12. We can all agree that Max Kepler is inconsistent, often frustrating, and seldom confused for Juan Soto in the batter's box. It is fun to dream about the possibilities of the Twins AAA players, but those who believe Kepler can be replaced this season by a player in the organization are dreaming indeed. The Twins will be in a competition all season for a playoff position and moving a player that is penned into the lineup for a wish and a hope is just not good baseball management and it won't happen. We may or may not see Kepler repeat his performance from the second half of 2023 but those odds are more favorable than expecting a miracle from a AAA player.
  13. Watching Wallner's at bats with the Saints in a more critical fashion in the last two weeks alone makes this an easy no. Big Matt has a couple of big holes to exploit. I'm not seeing how he manages to find success at the MLB level. You are correct that Max is gone after this season but the value has already been received. We need to enjoy Kepler for the player he is in the next three plus months.
  14. Twins fans hope that Royce Lewis is a force in the lineup on a regular basis. Although totally different players and not as physically talented from a visual standpoint, there was also great hope in April for the potential contributions from Julien and Wallner. As those two have found out, it is tough to excel at the MLB level. The book is still out on Lewis, but everyone will know more by the end of this year. I sure hope Lewis can be a consistent performer for the Twins. The post suggests a quick contract extension for Lewis and I would be shocked if the Twins were even having internal conversations about such a move at this time. Lewis is still getting his feet wet as a major league player. So while I and others (Twins fans) hope that Royce Lewis plays baseball at an All Star level on a consistent basis, we probably should wait to see how Lewis performs over a longer stretch before talking numbers on any long term contract.
  15. Yes, I don't disagree with you because none of the Atlanta players are clean comparisons. The Twins will sign a contract that easily benefits them but Lewis would not sign a 6/@$60M deal. Then again, Lewis hasn't proven anything to deserve a contract to this point in his career. The Twins have some big contracts on the books and arbitration coming for a host of players. Until the budget pushes upward toward $170-200 million, there will be difficult decisions made on who to keep, trade, or offer long term positions.
  16. I understand what your frame of thought is on barely qualifying for the playoffs with a mediocre team and then watching that team get pummeled in the playoffs. It is worth remembering though that both Arizona and Texas were mediocre going into last year's playoffs. The first goal is always to get to the playoffs. Some of the deadline pickups who have made a difference were not exactly noteworthy either before or after their playoff performances. There are some decent baseball players within the Twins organization and perhaps one of these may provide a dose of magic as opposed to picking up scrap that then performs as scrap. The weeks before the trade deadline are always interesting with speculation.
  17. Sorry, I wasn't real clear. I was more thinking along the lines of the Acuna or Murphy contracts, maybe Albies. I just don't see the Twins going much beyond $160 million in roster payroll unless they draw at least 2.5 million in attendance and sign a rich media contract. I question what the Minnesota market has as a financial ceiling.
  18. The paper napkin tells us that arbitration and rising costs are coming for the Twins roster. Perhaps the budget increases but adding another big contract seems unlikely, no matter how much one might believe in a player. Lewis banked a lifetime of bonus money when he signed out of high school, which usually means no discounts in future deals. The Twins may sign a player or two to long term contracts if the terms are heavily in their favor, similar to what the Atlanta organization has completed with several players. Additionally, I would add that Lewis only has about a half of one season worth of plate appearances thus far in his MLB career. Reality suggests year to year for Royce.
  19. Always interesting to see what ideas people have for additions to the Twins roster. The guesses are difficult and we still have yet to see names worth adding above those already within the organization.
  20. An addendum ..... While I was never remotely interested in the Twins adding Jordan Montgomery, mostly because of a cost/benefit ratio, perhaps people can now see how dominant or not the lefty is as a top of the line starting pitcher. Keep in mind that every pitcher gets owned at some moments, but Montgomery just doesn't have the stuff to consider handing out a huge contract.
  21. Festa looked decent but the Diamondbacks took some very effective swings against him in the 4th inning. It is always difficult to know if a pitcher loses their edge when they have a huge lead. I'm not sure what to say about Correa being HBP but hopefully he is ok because Carlos is easily the Twins MVP; nobody else even is close in value to C4.
  22. Canterino is mostly a myth unfortunately. He is currently (recently) down with a shoulder hurting.
  23. I, too, have watched a number of Nowlin's starts in the last two years. Good article and yes, Nowlin has improved with his command and control. Pitching requires so much expertise to put all of your pitches in the specific location demanded by the plan and repeating a delivery to maximize your talent is difficult. If Nowlin can continue to refine his mechanics he has a chance to play in the majors. Several times this year the lefty has shown real potential with his talent. Good luck to Jaylen.
