Minor League Report (7/8): Tanner Schobel Is Not Done
Brandon replied to Matt Braun's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
Isn’t Lee 2.5 years younger than the average player at AA? Isn’t he hitting an insane number of doubles that usually project to become HR power as he matures? I still feel pretty confident he will be a solid big leaguer. Probably a.270 ave with 20-25 HR power and 50-70 walks. That should help our team.- 23 replies

Week in Review: Stuck In Their Ways
Brandon replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
The Yankees who has the most similar lineup to ours just fired their hitting coach. I agree with moving Kepler to CF some time to bring up Wallner to play some in RF. I do think if Buxton isn’t up to playing in the field he should need to sit some games out if he continues to hurt the offense with no defense. I do think if Gallo can keep his OPS over .800 he can be fine on offense. Not great but ok.- 59 replies

A Few Under-The-Radar Trade Targets for the Twins
Brandon replied to Matt Braun's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
If we are all in right now we acquire Goldschmidt and Turner and maybe Pham and trade Kepler for a prospect maybe Polanco too and acquire a reliever too. -
Did the Twins Lose the Jose Berrios Trade
Brandon replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
If you don’t care how Berrios did when evaluating a trade why would it matter if we get a reliever and utility player? That’s like the Reds saying I don’t care how Mahle does in 2023 we gave up a top of the rotation arm for prospects.- 62 replies

Rumor: Top 50 Trade Candidates - Who Interests You?
Brandon replied to Brock Beauchamp's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
I'll just say Turner for 3B/1B/ DH Pham for a RH OF Barlow for the pen or if the Twins want to go all in Hader We absolutely need someone with a winning attitude to help get the team out of its offensive slump. -
Did the Twins Lose the Jose Berrios Trade
Brandon replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
In evaluating the trade Berrios was not that great last year with an ERA over 5.00. Saving 11 million which went used on payroll last year, and getting a reliever and a utility player for several years is even value in my book. The extension Berrios signed goes independent of the trade since he wouldn’t sign with us as far as we knew. But if we were getting several years of Berrios if we kept him then yes this is a bad trade.- 62 replies

I didn’t have a direction at anyone. It is an attitude that has been prevalent around here for a while. And since money all came out with the importance of on base percentage over batting average. I always thought it was important with how the Twins would score so many runs being near the bottom of the league in HRs.

Did the Twins Lose the Jose Berrios Trade
Brandon replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
In the Berrios trade we saved 11.4 million or so and got 2 high end prospects. If they become a useful utility player and reliever we still win the trade or atleast break even. I don’t think we loose the trade by much. Though we can debate all day long about whether the Twins should extended him. I think 7 years is too long for a pitcher. The market for starters continues to rise so the extension looks like it has the potential to be a bargain long term. We will know more on that in about 3 or 4 years.- 62 replies

Joey Gallo Shatters Failure Narratives

Joey Gallo is this generations David Kingman. -
Joey Gallo Shatters Failure Narratives
Brandon replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
He was signed after it appeared we lost out on resigning Correa. The Twins were targeting several players including Gallo and Justin Turner and I forgot the third one as a backup plan. The real question is why wasn’t Kepler traded? -
Joey Gallo Shatters Failure Narratives
Brandon replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I thought Gallo signed for 11 million. I do think he has been worth exactly what we paid him maybe slightly less making his signing an ok one. It would be nice to see him end up with 35-40 HRs this season and maybe 80-85 RBI. -
Checking In on the Twins’ Offseason Acquisitions
Brandon replied to Greggory Masterson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Gallo has one of the highest on base percentages on the offense. I think only Killeroff and Solano are higher with Lewis when he gets more At Bats. He leads the team in HRs too so how is it empty? Yes I think he needs a higher batting average and more productive outs too but he is more positive in the lineup then most of the rest of the line up. If anything Kepler should cede playing time except that Larnarch hasn’t beaten him out either. If he did He would be the starter.- 24 replies

Jhoan Duran Snubbed; Sonny Gray is Twins lone All Star
Brandon replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
When it comes to pitchers, I would rather they get snubbed. Less chance to get injured. But every team needs to be represented so there are always snubs. Brent Rooker is this season's Ron Coomer. But Duran does deserve to go. I think it would be better to do a league "who got snubbed" to help alleviate the bias.- 42 replies

Checking In on the Twins’ Offseason Acquisitions
Brandon replied to Greggory Masterson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Gallo is not blocking Larnarch. Larnarch hasn’t seized his opportunity. Do you want an .800 OPS hitter in your lineup or a.690 OPS hitter. If the OPS’s were reversed your blocking claim would be correct. You have a case that Wallner is being blocked. But not by Gallo….Kepler maybe but he is hitting better lately too so who knows.- 24 replies

Checking In on the Twins’ Offseason Acquisitions
Brandon replied to Greggory Masterson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I can't complain about Solano's 3 HR cause he is hitting doubles and his on base percentage is so high and He has never hit many HRs so that was known going into the season. .371 OBP coming into today's game. You are spot on with the rest of your comments. The only other complaint I have would be to see Taylor get some walks at a higher clip. or get his OBP over .300 for the season.- 24 replies

Checking In on the Twins’ Offseason Acquisitions
Brandon replied to Greggory Masterson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Gallo has his OPS back over .800 he has been on a little tear lately. He has been worth the signing but not the value signing we want. Gallo has been much better than the Correa signing. Though I’m not going to complain too much yet about the Correa signing. If Correa can get his batting average over .250-.260 this season he will be ok. His power numbers are consistent with past seasons. The Platinum Glove season Correa had seems to be an outlier season. He is good on defense and being above average for most of his six seasons is fine by me at SS. You are spot on about Vazquez. I hope he starts hitting soon. He doesn’t need to hit a ton but a .270 average with some doubles and occasional HR would help on offense. really the only negative from the 3 free agents above is their batting averages are all so far below what they should be and with others with a lower then expected batting average our offense is suffering because of this.- 24 replies

The Twins have Finally Matched the Yankees Offensively
Brandon replied to Ted Wiedmann's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I posted this point in a blog post this morning among other comparisons in trying to show that maybe batting average is more important then the number crunchers thought. also 2019 the Twins edged the Yankees for all time HRs hit in a season by a team. -
Solano has a .370 OBP while Arreaz had a .375 OBP for us last season. I think Solano has done a heck of a job replacing Arreaz bat from last year to this year and he costa less too. Pablo Lopez is 3rd in the American League in Strikeouts and is on pace to throw around 200 innings this year and he signed a 4 year extension. This trade is a win win for all involved. Why are posters bringing up the performance of others or the offense as a whole in their logic. It doesn’t work when you do a proper evaluation of what we got vs what we gave up. Saying the Marlins got more overall value is fine but arguable. We have a solid rotation heading into next season after going into this one with 3 free agents. Lopez Ryan Ober Varland Paddack while we can definitely use 1 more starter, we can atleast run this rotation out next year and be competitive with it. On offense Killeroff was going to be the 1B when healthy so where would you play Arraez? I like Arraez but he was going to get squeezed here.

I was looking at individual players on the team when I noticed a trend. Correa who is having a terrible year by our standards is actually walking and hitting the same power numbers as years past. but his batting average is way down. last season he hit .291 This year he is at .217 and his average has been climbing. If Correa was hitting closer to his career norms, say .270 what would his OPS be? It would be over .800 So I looked at the next punching bag. Gallo. He is also having a good walk rate and extra base hit rate for the season but he was successful with a .230 batting average. He just got his average up to .191 so he still needs to get his average up 35-40 points. What would that do to his OPS? It would be over .850 Lets keep going. Kepler has a higher ISO slg % then batting average. in his best season Kepler hit .252. If he was hitting closer to that say .240 his OPS would be close to .800 If you look at the batting average of those who are having good years on the team. over 100 OPS+ only Buxton and Gallo have below a .250 batting average. Now lets compare to other teams. The Yankees have the most similar lineup to us. They have a similar team batting average, similar power, and similar walk rate. We are 10th in the league in scoring they are 11th. so obviously this type of lineup construction doesn't work. not here or in New York. Who are the top 2 offenses. the teams with the top 2 team batting averages. The Rangers and Rays. I have more boring data that continues to show this over and over. Maybe getting base hits is more important to scoring runs than originally thought.

I gotta disagree with this article. 1. Solano has been a decent enough replacement for Arreaz. A .370 OBP is pretty good. He hits doubles. And he has decent enough bat control. Pablo Lopez who we got in the trade is third in strikeouts in the AL and is a solid pitcher who signed an extension bringing some long term stability to the rotation. the offensive problems for this club stems from having very few 100+ OPS hitters in the starting lineup. Miranda got off to a horrendous start and was demoted. Kepler gets close the backtracks and gets close then backtracks. Correa and Buxton are slumping Gordon slumped before getting hurt Larnarch hasn’t quite taken off either Valazquez hasn’t hit as well as advertised so far in his first season here. Taylor has been ok as a hitter in some aspects but his OBP is way too low. Now on the other side Lewis and Killeroff have made their way into the lineup and have produced. Wallner is trying to get here. Jeffers has hit in a back up role and should start getting more playing time. and we are left hoping that Buxton and Correa will break out and hit. That will go a long way in helping posters hear more properly evaluate the Arreaz trade. That deal has been more win/ win with Miami really winning at this point and so does our rotation.

I don’t think the Arreaz trade is as bad as it’s been talked about here. Pablo Lopez haz pitched solid and signed an extension. What makes the Arreaz trade look so bad is that our offense has cratered while Arreaz has taken off. But Solano has been a poor man’s Arreaz with over .370 OBP. So his main skill set has mostly been replaced by a capable player. The bigger problem is how bad the rest of the offense has been.

Optimizing the Line Up with What We Already Have on the Team.
Brandon commented on Brandon's blog entry in Blog Brandon
It doesn’t have to be the rest of the season. Obviously Gallo is not a full time CF but this lineup is designed by using our best players in a spot we can maximize the offensive contributions we have been getting. The lineup will change from day to day but using a lineup like this for a few weeks may see us scoring more and that is the point. Jump starting the offense into consistency and constant scoring. also I believe Correa will hit and move up in the lineup. and I wanted to get a discussion about this as it feels like we have the pieces for a good offense but they are not being deployed optimally.
