    Go back to the 2009/2010 off-season when this contract was negotiated. At that point in time Joe Mauer was the best baseball player in the world. Whatever it took to get him to sign was money well spent.

    Players must learn to report ANY physical symptom that is at all out of the ordinary. Per the StarTribune it has been over five weeks since the injury occurred. Get past the misguided notion of self-sacrifice and bravado. Get past the denial. I realize that many athletes have the view that trying to play through an injury is admirable, but the team's medical staff is made up of trained professionals and it is they who should determine the best course of action, not the player. Look at Ryan's recent performance. This is a classic example of a player hurting his team by not reporting an injury. I don't solely blame Ryan, I guess, because it's up to the team to create a culture and environment in which players understand their responsibilities in this regard and feel confident that they won't be judged as crybabies or prima donnas.

    1987 is an invalid comparison. The 2023 team itself may be remindful of the 1987 team but that's not the case regarding the postseason situation. Not even close. The 1987 team had the worst record of 4 postseason teams but only had to win 2 series and had home field advantage for both of them. Moreover, when they played St. Louis Jack Clark was out and Terry Pendleton was significantly gimpy. The 2023 team currently has the worst record of 12 postseason teams and is guaranteed home field advantage in only the first of four postseason series that they would need to win to become World Champions.

    By its inaction the FO is saying that we wouldn't have been able to improve our roster at a reasonable price. They are saying that it's up to our current players to improve their performance. Now. So OK, guys, do it. Let's see what you got.

    No bullpen has 8 lock-down guys and this statement is true for many, many relievers throughout the major leagues. He's good enough to be on the roster, but I wish we could predict when he is going to give up a home run because when he does it seems like it happens at the worst possible moments.

    Concur. I think the combination of Buxton at DH, Julien at 2B, Polanco at 3B and Lewis in CF is probably the best and most likely way to finish the regular season, making the shift FF posted for the postseason. I think putting Buxton in CF in the postseason has been the Twins' plan for several months. That plan means hoping for two uncertain things. One, that we qualify for the postseason with our current outfielders and, two, that keeping Buck at DH enables his knee to hold up well enough to play CF in October.

    Once again, every player who does not have a no-trade clause in his contract should always be on the market and traded if the transaction improves the organization. Every. Player.

    Yeah, we could see him in the September Angels series instead. I'd rather have seen him with the White Sox.

    As you were saying, since today is an off day nothing needs to be made official until tomorrow. I assume they'll add Floro. Buxton will be back from paternity leave. Larnach was sent back to AAA after yesterday's game in order to be able to play for the Saints tonight.

    And which reliever would you have put into the game? In the 4th inning, no less. And what would that do for the KC series.

    Twins fans look at this game and see a bullpen implosion. Mariners fans look at this game and see a gritty come-from-behind victory powered by their hitters. Monday's game was the same, except with the roles reversed. It's just baseball. Over the course of 162 games there will be many like these. And remember, in baseball winning 11 out of 20 games is good and winning 12 out of 20 is elite. You just keep playing and continue to try to do your best.

    So in other words, a manager should make only the right moves and never the wrong moves.

    Comment on Gallo pinch running for Solano in the 10th. Even though I have never thought of Gallo as a particularly fast runner I suspect Solano is slower. But beyond that base running is about more than just speed. For example, Tom Kelly has said that Kent Hrbek was a good base runner because he had good baseball instincts and was a good judge of his own speed. Gallo scoring on the sac fly in the 10th inning is a play that some players don't make. He knew he needed to go all out from the base when the ball was caught just in case something weird happened and as a result he was in position to score.

    I was one of those who predicted 90-93 wins before the season started. We would need to go 37-24 (.607) to get to 90. Right now with the roll we are on that seems eminently possible.

    Winning this type of game is the mark of a successful team. I'm going to stop short of saying team of destiny but I think we have been witnessing a turnaround during the last 10 days. It's time for the team to leave the rest of the division eating our dust.

    Most of the time one of the goals is to make the pitcher throw a lot of pitches and get him out of the game early. It may have been the opposite last night--keep Lynn in the game as long as possible so they can hit off him instead of a reliever.

    It appeared to me that Julien got his hand on home plate literally a couple milliseconds before contact was made on the tag but the replay was not clearly conclusive. So I think the call on the field would have been upheld whether he was ruled safe or out. Had the play occurred early in the game it probably would not have been challenged. As an aside, I wish the replay process would be changed. I think the reviewer(s) should not be influenced by the call on the field. The replay would need to be stopped before it shows the umpire making the call. The play would be called one way, or the other way, or inconclusive. Only if the reviewer rules inconclusive would the call on the field stand.

    An analogy comes to mind. It's like driving on a winding road behind someone who is going three MPH slower than you want to go. It's frustrating and you want to pass but either there's no opportunity or the risk of making a move is too high for the small increase in speed. So you wind up deciding that the best course of action is to hold your position and hope something changes in your favor.

    For Pete's sake. Any and every player should be traded if the transaction makes the organization better. But it's waaaaay doubtful that this would be the case in a Ryan trade. Giving up a very good, young, controllable starter like Ryan would happen only if the overpay from the other team(s) involved is huge. Jumbo. Ginormous! Woo! Woo!
