  1. If we play .500 baseball for the rest of the season (16-15), here’s how the other teams in the ALC would have to do to finish ahead of us. Cleveland: 23-8 Detroit: 26-6 The White Sox and Kansas City could not pass us.
  2. I guess today is nitpick day for me. I’m pretty sure that “getting beaned” is baseball slang for getting hit in the head by a pitch, bean being a slang term for head. It’s not used for a HBP elsewhere on the body.
  3. Not using robo-umps hurts everything about the game.
  4. Double warning: this is both a pet peeve and a nitpick. In MLB, the games played after the regular season which eventually determine the World Champion are NOT the playoffs. This portion of the schedule is correctly referred to as The Postseason. In MLB, games played in addition to the 162 scheduled regular season games that are needed to determine Postseason berths are correctly referred to as playoff games and are part of the regular season. MLB is not the NFL or the NHL or the NBA. Those leagues have playoffs to determine their champions. This is certainly not of vital importance but I think anyone who writes or talks about any subject professionally should use correct terminology, and this certainly applies to baseball journalists. (Steps off soapbox and leaves.)
  5. Keuchel and Ryan are fresher than the other four right now so I would be more inclined to keep those two on regular rest and give each of the other four one skipped start. The team is currently rostering six starters. I think the rules would allow Ober to be optioned today, enabling us to add another reliever right now, and with the roster expansion taking effect on Friday he could be reinstated at any time. With a skipped turn his next start would be around September 8.
  6. Reminds me of the story about the stoic Lutheran man who loved his wife so much that one time he almost told her.
  7. Splitting the series would have been considered good. Taking 3 of 4 is an excellent outcome. Similarly, taking 2 of the upcoming 6 games against Cleveland would be OK. 3 of 6 would be good. 4 or more would be excellent.
  8. I’ve made this comment on at least one previous thread but I think it bears repeating. I do not see the point of a challenge system for balls and strikes calls. It seems just silly. In the event of a challenge the electronic call stands, which makes two points. One, there’s no reason not to simply use the electronic call in the first place. Two, by defaulting to the electronic call baseball is acknowledging that the electronic call is more likely than the human call to be correct, and probably significantly so. And both these points argue in favor of the implementation of electronic calls for all MLB games beginning in spring training of 2024.
  9. Oy. Well, let’s see if the boys can make me happy.
  10. Challenging because you may as well this late in the game.
  11. I’m not going to say what I did before.
  12. We are tied. We should probably be behind. This is good.
  13. If you arrive very early park very close. Otherwise the shuttle is the way to go.
  14. I predict fewer home runs tonight. Cooler drier air is more dense and provides more air resistance. Of course if we strike the ball the way some of our recent dingers were struck that won’t matter.
  15. Following on Gameday at the moment. Hope Gallo got his money’s worth on the ejection.
  16. I once heard someone say that you either like scotch or gin but not both. I have at least two friends who are counter examples.
  17. I’m definitely in the Tanq-&-tonic cohort.
