    Good article. I agree that trading Hicks was the right thing to do. The wrong thing to do was accepting Murphy in return. I assume that the team no longer employs the scout(s) who misevaluated Murphy.

    IMHO, in the case of both pitchers there is also some mind-over-matter coming into play. Pagan seems to be at his worst when there's little to no room for error. For Jax things seem to snowball when trouble starts. These problems, in theory, could be minimized with coaching or similar therapy.

    Bump. The discussion on the Fun With Numbers thread led me to think more about this. It was pointed out on that thread that the Athletics' lease in Oakland is up at the end of 2024. Now, apparently a new stadium in Las Vegas will not be in place until the 2027 season. Meanwhile, Las Vegas Ballpark, which seats 10,000 according to the internet, is the home of the AAA Las Vegas Aviators. And, probably not coincidentally, the Aviators happen to be the A's AAA affiliate. So it makes me wonder if MLB will allow the A's to move at the end of 2024, play in Las Vegas Ballpark in 2025 and 2026, and move to the new stadium in 2027. In fact, I wonder if this hasn't already been consummated under the table. I'm sure the Las Vegas community would welcome this with open arms and playing without a lease or with two one-year leases in a deteriorating stadium in Oakland would not be a happy situation. A new AAA franchise would need to be secured in either case, and this would simply move that up by two years. I would imagine that a AAA team in Oakland would not be well supported. There was a AAA team in Hawaii from 1961 through 1987, and I would think a team would be supported there if it weren't for the horribly inconvenient travel logistics. It will be interesting to see where that team will be located.

    Exhibits A, B, and C regarding the potential pitfalls of free agency. You are paying based on the past performance of a player who is almost always past his prime. Of these three Bell at age 30 would seem to have been the best risk. Abreu is 36, and very few players have Nelson Cruz-like performance past that age. I'm sure there are people in the Astros' front office wondering, "What were we thinking??"

    There is no time that is a good time for a disaster. No matter how one tries to spin this it is bad for all of MLB for things in Oakland to be this bad whether the team is moving or not, especially if it's going to be this bad for four seasons.

    I feel bad posting this to a thread called Fun With Numbers because there is nothing fun or good about it from any perspective. Oakland's run differential through 51 games is -183. The second-worst in the Majors is Kansas City at -73. Oakland's pace now projects to a record of 32-130. This would be by far the worst win-loss record in the modern era. This goes beyond a statistical anomaly or an historical quirk. This is disastrous.

    Exactly. We have been underperforming yet we lead the division by 2.5 games. If our players play up to their abilities 90 wins is still not an unreasonable expectation. The division is ours for the taking

    In a perverse way part of me hopes that happens. It would be fun to see brains exploding among the baseball purists.

    He has proven himself. As long as he is healthy enough to play regularly he should be on the major league roster. The thing is, the same thing was true about Miranda at the beginning of the season. So if he struggles there's always AAA for him to work out any issues.

    Falvine know that this is not fantasy baseball. Their high-salaried jobs are on the line with each decision they make. Add to that the pride/shame associated with performing at the highest level of their profession and they have a lot at stake. I believe that they absolutely do what they think is best no matter what the fan base wants. Every. Time. But I still hope we get Lewis on the major league roster ASAP.

    Just pathetic timely hitting. Just pathetic. In spite of that the team played well enough to earn a split of the road trip and almost certainly would have had one if not for poor umpiring in the Monday game. And in spite of that we still find ourselves in first place by 3.5 games. So things are not all gloom and doom. Chin up, keep working. The division is ours for the taking.

    When the Twins made the decision to keep Pagan on staff I was open minded about it. I assumed that the FO and on-field people felt that he could be effective with proper coaching and proper use. And I thought it was the right thing to do to give him opportunities to prove himself. While he has mostly done OK, when things have gone bad for him things have gone very bad. Every reliever on a team with championship aspirations needs to be able to do the job in any situation and it seems to me that he is simply not reliable enough. I think the time has come to thank him for his service and wish him the best of luck in his future elsewhere.

    Sometimes you're the pigeon, sometimes you're the statue. On Monday Cuzzi was the pigeon and the Twins were the statue. Today the Dodgers were the pigeon and Pagan was the statue.

    Obviously there is never one and only one reason for a loss. But in this case I think the two obvious missed calls on the Kirilloff strikeout had a very large effect. Moreover, Kirilloff did not make a mistake in that at-bat. Cuzzi did. I think it's very, very likely that the Twins would have scored at least one more run in the top of the tenth if not for those blown calls. And that would have won the game. Cuzzi's poor umpiring is a reason for the loss that is just as real as any other reason.

    What's even more telling than Cuzzi's poor grade is Gibson's grade. The best human pitch-caller is about 94% accurate. I don't have a citation for this, but it's my understanding that electronic systems have been more accurate than that for many years. As said before, there is no good reason not to replace human pitch callers with electronic ones.

    The umpires would overrule the call on their own. No challenge needed.

    My patience regarding this issue has evaporated. At this point I say **** both Manfred and the union. Just get the right thing done.

    Why have challenges? In a challenge the electronic call supersedes the human call. So just use the electronic call in the first place.

    And this is the 14th season since that happened in which he has continued to umpire. It's unconscionable that MLB has not relieved him of duty.

    I didn't see any of this game. When I checked on the outcome this morning I was disappointed in the Twins for scoring only once in the 10th inning after having the bases loaded with no outs. And then I saw the Kirilloff strikeout. Now instead I'm disappointed in Phil Cuzzi. I believe that Cuzzi truly thought those pitches were strikes, which shows two things. One, some umpires are better than others (and Cuzzi is not one of the better ones). Two, the outcome of this game was almost certainly changed by these incorrect calls, and this would not have happened with electronic pitch calling. While Cuzzi is largely to blame for the Kirilloff strikeout, MLB is also culpable for not implementing electronic pitch calling. Everyone who has studied this matter knows that the electronic system is more accurate than the best human umpires. While there are reasons to prefer human pitch calling over electronic pitch calling in the Major Leagues there are no good reasons--absolutely none--to do so. I am disgusted.
