Twins Should Extend Tyler Mahle
Otaknam replied to Cody Schoenmann's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
A Mahle extension saves face for the FO. They don’t have to admit that the trade was terrible because Mahle would be back sometime in 2024. -
Happy for Enlow getting a promotion to AAA. Someone needs to emerge to replace the incompetent Pagan. Why is Pagan still on the team? How many games has he blown over the past 1 1/2 seasons? At least 9. He is only useful to mop up, not high leverage. Any young arm can do that. When Pagan enters a close game late I stop watching.

Is the Next Joe Ryan Already in the Twins System?
Otaknam replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
It’s too early to draw comparisons for a guy so low in the minors. But thanks for the information on a prospect. -
Can the Twins Predict Injury With Byron Buxton?
Otaknam replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I cringe in expectation of injury anytime Buxton slides into a base, tries to stop a swing, sprints from one base to another, or chases a fly ball. We now know he is fragile as glass, and that just standing in the on deck circle he may trip on a bat and be out for the season. This is who he is, in and out of the lineup due to migraines or some bizarre injury.- 15 replies

It's Okay to be Impressed by the Twins
Otaknam replied to Matt Braun's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Dreadful offense has neutered the team’s chances, despite excellent starting pitching. Hopefully Buxton and Correa will get going. Gallo has replaced Sano as a two to theee strikeout guy per game, albeit with much better defense. Too much swing and miss up an down the lineup, but I don’t know how you fix that.- 39 replies

Nygaard Mock Draft v. 1.0
Otaknam replied to Jeremy Nygaard's topic in MLB Draft, International Signings, Amateur Baseball
According to some learned sources, like Baseball America, there are five players at the top of this draft. So the Twins should get an potential impact player, hopefully a college player who can move quickly. Skenes seems to be the only pitcher who rates real high, so I expect the Twins will continue to select position players early on the draft because they are easier to project. After that load up on high velocity pitchers who have upside and hope you strike gold. -
Corbin Burnes at the right price would be worth considering since he is under contract through 2024. Then they could let Sonny Gray leave as a free agent, since he is older and been injury prone. But the FO has already traded a lot of prospects with mInimal return, and they have to hold onto Brooks Lee. So I don’t know what it would take.

I cringe any time BUXTON runs hard or slides, expecting that he will be out for six weeks or the whole year. Has any player ever been more fragile? Bubble wrap him!

Reevaluating the Twins’ Long-Term Third Base Plan
Otaknam replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
The Twins have a good problem with Lee, Lewis, and Julien. But unlike some posting here, I think it would be foolish to use Lewis as a so called super sub, playing infield and outfield just to keep him in the lineup. Once Lewis is called up play him at third and have him spell Correa at short. We already saw the result of playing Lewis out of position in the outfield, so no more of that. Correa is an elite defender and should be able to maintain that for a few years. So that means Lewis at third. When Lee’s bat is ready he can play second, short, or third and DH. No one posting here knows which infield position is better for Lewis and Lee. The coaching staff will sort that out when the time comes. Julian’s bat look legit so I can see him DHing and spelling at third and second base, maybe and even try him at first to keep his bat in the lineup.- 36 replies

There is no reason the call up Lee unless he hits his way to AAA, and then keeps on hitting there. Lewis is more likely to be called up if he has a solid 20 game rehab stint. And he may be their third baseman of the future, given the defensive struggles Miranda has had a third. Lewis is an elite athlete and should be able to handle third base.

Baldelli has been reluctant to let Ober pitch five innings, and sometimes he was even pulled after four. Give him the chance to prove he can start every fifth day and let’s see what happens. He might figure things out against left handed hitters, which will make him tough to face. And he might be past his injury problem, given all the professional training and preventative medical care they get.

Loved the comment on Taylor as “the only Twin allowed to steal a base.” Guess the learning to to be a ML manager is pretty steep for Rocco, today’s Earl Weaver.

Excellent satire! With the Twins having a chance to sweep the hated Yankees Rocco decides to give Buxton and Polanco a day off. The only surprise is that he didn’t sit Correa too. Baldelli has worked out a schedule in advance to rest players, which makes some sense given the long season. But when you have a chance to sweep the Yankees for once in two decades, it is time to rethink that strategy. Why sit someone who is crushing the ball?

Twins 7, Royals 1: Big Arms Bring Back Bombas

The Twins Bullpen is Missing a Starter
Otaknam replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
What I believe the Twins will do is give Maeda a handful of starts to gauge his effectiveness. Meanwhile Ober continues minor league starts and is the first call if and when Maeda falters or another starter gets injured.- 32 replies

That is great news! Lopez is looking like a real bulldog front line starter, which the Twins haven’t had forever. Losing Arraez hurt, given his popularity , but he is one dimensional, though that one dimension is fantastic. But he was dealt at the top of his value, a smart move to get max value back. Hopefully Ryan continues to emerge with his new sinker and proves to be at least a number 2, giving the team a 1-2 punch at the top of the rotation. Gray has looked very good and if that continues an extension makes sense if the price is right. Mahle needs to show for an extension more but there are lots of games left for him to prove it. Paddock is the wildcard coming back from injury so that is an unknown. Varland and Ober have shown lots of potential as solid number 3 starters, maybe better. Things are looking up!

Could it be be that at, long last, Rocco is learning how to handle starting pitchers? He leaves rookie Varland in through SIX INNINGS AGAINST THE YANKEES IN YANKEE STADIUM! And only 86 pitches! With a bullpen that has been outstanding so far! That might be a firing offense for the FO. This is a very good sign!

Are Twins Starters Pitching Longer in 2023?
Otaknam replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I’m not convinced yet that Baldelli and the FO will allow the starters to go deep into games. There were too many head scratching times last year when Rocco removed efficient starters after five innings. Hopefully they have seen the light.- 14 replies

Reviewing the Tyler Mahle Trade
Otaknam replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
It’s too early to judge the trade, but Mahle does have the potential to be a very good starter, if not a number one. The good news is they traded position players where they have depth, which means they didn’t trade Lewis or Lee, which would have been disastrous! I was holding my breath on that!- 57 replies

That will not happen! Correa will be with this team throughout his contract. They’ll move him to third if Lewis or Lee claim shortstop in ensuing years. l

Spring Training Winners and Losers
Otaknam commented on SportsGuyDalton's blog entry in SportsGuyDalton's Blog
Ober has a number four ceiling until he can crank up his fastball to 95 consistently. That would make his other pitches that much more effective. Also in 2021 Rocco often would take Ober out after four innings, sometimes five, indicating he didn’t have confidence in Ober or was concerned about health. That has to change too. -
Is Jovani Moran Being Overlooked in the Twins Pen?
Otaknam replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Moran has proven his worth. Three lefties in the BP isn’t a problem if they can get outs. Cut Pagan and keep Moran.- 16 replies

Kenta Maeda's Discouraging Spring
Otaknam replied to Cody Pirkl's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
It would be difficult for Maeda to be in the BP and expect him to work towards starting because he wouldn’t get the innings needed to stretch himself out. My guess is, unless he is awful between now and the season opener, they will have him starting and have long relievers ready. If he isn’t cutting it after four starts he is in the BP and Ober is inserted as a starter. Otherwise just keep him in the BP and start Ober.- 36 replies
