Offseason Status Update: Time to Pivot
rv78 replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
The biggest pivot they need to make is to go from their current strategy to a different one, because their current strategy is a losing one. It is counter-productive to trade away top prospects at the trade deadline for veterans with a 1 or 2 year contract then don't go all in on Free Agents to finish the process. #1 you are losing good prospects and #2 you aren't adding the best veteran players who go to other teams thus making their teams better which also makes your team weaker. This organization is lost. It has no direction, no willingness to do what it takes to win either short-term or long-term. It's a "We Tried" FO that doesn't know what they are doing. It's been 31 years since a Championship and this FO will never get us back there so be happy with a "competitive" team that they promise every year. Competitive verses Contending are two different things. Just remember for Goodness sake, go support this team so St Peter isn't upset about the lack of fans attending games to watch all of the 2nd and 3rd tier cheap players they assemble wearing those sporty new uniforms!- 38 replies

Rumor: Carlos Rodon Signs with the New York Yankees
rv78 replied to Brock Beauchamp's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
I wonder if Rodon was waiting to see if the Twins got Correa before making his decision? Probably not but coincidently he signs with another club almost immediately after Correa goes elsewhere. If you don't land big fish once in a while the other big fish are going to keep swimming past you. It's all about committment. To putting a winning team on the field. Yankees sign Judge, Twins don't sign Correa. Rodon chooses ? The big spenders are Contenders. The Twins are Pretenders. -
The Minnesota Twins' Front Office Played Themselves
rv78 replied to Matthew Taylor's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
They were in first place with the help of Arraez hitting. When were they in 1st place due to Correa hitting? He didn't carry his share of the load until it was too little too late. Can't remember how many times I saw him strikeout when they needed clutch hits from him in the first half of the year. He was also among the top 3 in grounding into doubleplays. Never said I hated him.... just don't think he is anywhere close to being worth what he was and is now getting paid.- 76 replies

The Minnesota Twins' Front Office Played Themselves
rv78 replied to Matthew Taylor's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
In my book it all boils down to 1 thing.... $285M wasn't going to get it done and they probably knew that. That being said, maybe they weren't all that serious about breaking the bank for him. The first half of the 2022 season Correa was probably one of the worst clutch hitters on the team. And the Twins were in first place. What department was he the best hitter of? Arraez was better at BA, OBP and runs scored. Buxton led the team in HR and SLG. Miranda had more RBI's. Polanco had more walks. If it weren't for Gary Sanchez, Correa would have led the team in strikeouts. Sure he has a good glove at the most demanding position in baseball and he was a clubhouse leader, but he wasn't anything spectacular with the bat and the numbers prove it. Had he not had a good finish to the season his numbers would have been much worse and he'd still be using the Twins in 2023. I say ... Good riddance!- 76 replies

Last year Correa was a gift that fell into Falvines lap. There was no way they were actually going to try to bring him back. $285M was a good offer but they knew it wouldn't be good enough. So they are once again in the boat of saying "we tried". I for one am not disappointed at all. Never really wanted him in the first place and definitely didn't want him back. So they still need a SS, big deal. They also need an Ace, another stud for the bullpen, a LF, a player who can play CF full-time, a RF who can hit, and a power guy at 1B. Until they tackle and solve all of those problems areas this team isn't going anywhere even if they had a Correa at SS.

It is true they traded away Garver and Rortvedt and then with only having Sanchez and Leon for 1 season it put them in a bind, but they didn't HAVE to go get Vazquez. They could have taken the cheaper route like they normally do and sign a couple of has-been left-overs like Sanchez and Leon. I'll give them credit for at least getting someone with more value than those two.

Yes it is sad that a 3/30 deal is their #3 biggest FA deal. And when you consider that they basically flipped the #2 Donaldson deal for their #1 Correa deal and it lasted 1 whole season, that is really pathetic. And yet they think (St Peter) we as fans are suppose to go out and support this team after they have continually taken left-overs. Target Field was built to help add revenue so they could become active players in the FA market. When is that going to happen?

Rumor: Twins among teams 'seriously in play' for Rodon

Twins May Benefit From a Change in Spending Strategy
rv78 replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
"You HAVE to play around the edges to make sure you don't screw up." I would say the Farmer trade and Vazquez signing are exactly that. Both solid moves that will improve the team in 2023. Now trade Kepler. Get a good RH bat to take his place. Sign a SS like an Iglesias as a stop gap to Lewis and then seriously go after Rodon for an Ace to make the entire rotation better.- 26 replies

Minnesota Twins Sign Catcher Christian Vazquez
rv78 replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I like this signing. Twins have plenty of cash to sign FAs. No need to trade away more prospects for short-term fixes. I don't care if Vazquez is right-handed. So was Gary Sanchez and both he and Jeffers got plenty of at bats with the DH spot especially against lefties. Vazquez is a career .260 hitter. If he can hit that for the Twins I'll take it along with his good defensive skills. This is a win by the FO in my book.- 51 replies

What’s Happening With Pablo Lopez
rv78 replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Makes sense for the Twins to trade away their best hitter. He doesn't fit their desire of the all or nothing HomeRun/Strikeout hitters that they prefer. If possible I see them bringing back Sano to play 1B especially if Arraez is traded. At this point, if they trade away Arraez, then let Correa and/or Rodon go elsewhere I'm going to seriously consider boycotting this team until they get a new FO and Manager.- 15 replies

Why Can't the Twins Spend Like the Padres?
rv78 replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
One of the reasons the Twins organization used to get Target Field built was so they would be able to spend big on top Free Agents with the added revenue it was going to provide. Outside of Correa dropping into their lap last season they have done nothing to fill that promise. Back in the Puckett era, I know there was at least 1 season where the Twins drew 3 million fans. In 2022 it was about half that. If you draw another 1 million by having a winning team won't that increase your revenue? If each fan spends $50 for a ticket and another $30 for concessions and memorabilia wouldn't those same 1 million extra fans generate about $80M more in revenue? It would probably be more. There's a saying that's been around for a very long time...... Sometimes you get what you pay for. Now add a good TV contract in the very near future and there will only be one reason why the Twins can't spend. They aren't committed to winning. -
Rumor: Twins have offered Christian Vazquez a contract
rv78 replied to Brock Beauchamp's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
All this means is so they can say. They tried. Darren Wolfson says they were never in on Contreras, which is no surprise. Why would they try to get the best available FA catcher? That goes against their main priority of saving money, go for the cheaper option even if it means getting players that are 2nd best. Then guys like St Peter wonder why Twins fans don't come to Target Field and support the team. Bogaerts is now off-the-board and big names are signing everywhere. Looks like another off-season of picking from "what's left" or hoping a Correa drops in their lap. -

The Argument for Trading Jorge Polanco
rv78 replied to Matt Braun's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
If the return is right I'd trade him. I'm in the boat that you do whatever it takes to make your team better. Is the reason to trade him to save money? or with that saved money you can add a Rodon and Correa? Do you weaken the team at 2nd base by doing so or did you already solve that issue by adding Farmer? If Polanco is in the trade arena you have to move Kepler first or maybe package them together. Do they bring back a young stud catcher while freeing up the cash to add Correa and Rodon? Then I say, do it now. -
Will the Real Joe Ryan Please Stand Up
rv78 replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Ryan's ability or lack thereof to get tougher teams out is all the more reason to go get a guy like Rodon. Pushing Ryan and all of the other starters down one notch on the totem pole in the rotation will make the Twins so much better that it is almost unimaginable. Besides the health aspect of Mahle, Maeda and Ober being what it is you couldn't ask for any better insurance adding a Rodon. Don't get me wrong, I'm excited about Joe being in the Twins rotation for many years to come but taking some pressure off a young guy like himself will only help him long-term.- 14 replies

Analyze This: Jose Abreu Is the Bat Minnesota Needs
rv78 replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Don't understand the love for aging veterans clearly showing decline in their game. You list multiple reasons why the Twins should stay away from a guy like Abreu. His career BA is .311 yet in 2022 he hit .268. Both of his OBP and SLG% are also clearly dropping off. His 15 HR are a career low and RBI's 2nd lowest. He is a defensive liability. I guess if you want more unproductive hitters that can't play defense then he'd be a perfect fit. I'd rather they kept Urshela and used a Miranda, Arraez, Urshela rotation for 1B,3B,DH than bring in another washed up veteran, which is what they've been doing with the rotation. How well has that worked out? -
Are the Twins Right in Trusting Miranda at the Hot Corner?
rv78 replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Well, they have been trusting Buxton to be their centerfielder and he's only given them 1 full season in 8 years so what more do they have to lose?- 21 replies

If you don't pay for a "front of the rotation starter" you can still be over-paying for the other guys as well. Would you agree that the Twins over-paid for Maeda in 2022? How about Shoemaker? Was he an over-pay? I'd rather they over-pay for a guy like Rodon than the typical bottom feeders like they have been signing. At least with a "front of the rotation starter" like Rodon there is a chance that he will be just that. a front of the rotation starter. Over-paying for guys like Shoemaker, Archer and so on will never get you anywhere. Give me "the chance", not the "what's left".
-
So Doc you believe that Rodon could be very effective if the Twins use him for short outings verses going for complete games. What are they waiting for then? He fits their mold perfectly. 5 innings and boom you're outta the game. No reason to use another effective inning or two if it's there. Just throw it away and exhaust the arms in the bullpen. We all know how good that works. As for taking a "chance" on him are the washed up veterans the Twins have signed lately been the answer? I'd rather they over-pay a bit for a Rodon than see a Shoemaker, Happ, Bundy, Archer prototype again. And why is it OK to over-pay for a Correa but it's not OK for a pitcher? So what if it takes 5 years at $160M. That's less burn than what the Twins would feel with a Correa contract and have his salary drag in the last years of an 8, 9 or 10 year contract.

Minnesota Twins Extension Candidate: Luis Arraez
rv78 replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
First the FO needs to decide if he's going to be their 1B going forward. Consensus here seems to indicate that he can't play anywhere else in the field so it's either 1B or DH. Second, the Manager needs to decide where he is going to have him hit in the lineup. Sometimes it's leadoff, sometimes it's 2nd, sometimes it's 6th or 7th or who the hell knows? It makes no sense not to have him batting 1st or 2nd regardless of the matchup. He's the best hitter on the team. Put him in a spot and leave him there.... ALL SEASON. As for his knees, Was it really his knees in 2022? He had hamstring issues towards the end of the season. Don't think his knees were bothering him. If he is only valuable if he's hitting .330+ but is considered average at .300 then there are a buttload of guys in the majors getting paid a lot more than him hitting less than .240 that should be considered worthless.... aka Kepler. Is it time to extend Arraez? Only if the plan is to use him at 1B long-term. If it isn't then I don't do it. If Kirilloff doesn't come back healthy, (who was going to be the 1B post Sano) then the decision might be easy. If Kirilloff does come back healthy then Arraez maybe becomes a trade piece with his value being at its highest. -
How Will Kyle Farmer Fit in for the Twins?
rv78 replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Maybe Urshela was a salary dump, maybe he wasn't. One thing is clear, if the Twins want Arraez getting the majority of at bats at 1B then they needed to find a place for Miranda and Urshela was blocking him there. 1B wasn't Miranda's natural position to begin with. Farmer fills a hole. Miranda now fills a hole. Arraez now has his hole to himself. Polanco can stay at 2B. Gordon can stay in the OF or be emergency infielder. Farmer is emergency catcher. If Lewis or Lee or Martin make it this year, great! Push Farmer, push Miranda, push Kepler outta here if he's still here. Use money saved for an ACE and another shutdown arm in the pen. make the entire team better, not just one position, shortstop. -
It's amazing how quickly some people think a player can go from being an intregal part of a roster to a liability. Last off-season everyone was clamoring that Miranda should have been a September callup and it was terrible that he didn't get an opportunity until 2022. Now after a very successful rookie season he's a 1 hit wonder and he'll never amount to a hill of beans. Pitchers have him figured out and he's toast. Geeze guys.... give the guy a chance to prove himself. How many rookies play their 1st season in the majors at a position they very rarely played in the minors and still produce like he did? Maybe with the defensive adjustments he had to make and LEARN was one of the reasons he started to struggle a bit at the plate. Maybe concentrating on defense can cause someone to lose a little bit of focus offensively. The majors is a big step no matter what. A lot of players can't make it much less do it at a different position they probably aren't confortable with. I for one am glad Urshela was traded. Now he can play where he is accustomed to playing and should be even better.
