Minor League Report (8/5): The Bats Are Alright
Doctor Wu replied to Matt Braun's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
We sure need some more options at first base in case Kiriloff isn't able to come back soon. The ability to adequately play first may be the only reason Gallo is still on the team at this point. In addition to all the strikeouts, his previous ability to draw walks seems to have vanished, and his OBP keeps dropping.- 20 replies

Front Office Flops As They Fail Twins Bullpen
Doctor Wu replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Some good suggestions, especially Headrick, who looked impressive during his other stints on the team. Ortega seemed like he had something to offer too. And I'm also high on the potential of Funderburk. Call him up? Okay, there may be a question of too many healthy arms at some point, but why not!- 20 replies

A sad stat regarding the Twins and their lack of good hitters
Doctor Wu replied to Rik19753's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
Ouch that is indeed a very sad statistic. But let's be honest, that's the cold hard truth. There really aren't any batters in our lineup that strike fear into the hearts of the opposing team. Based on recent performance, you could say that Julian and Jeffers (and okay, even Kepler is hitting well lately) might be candidates to draw such a walk, but otherwise there aren't any Twins players you would automatically think of intentionally walking. -
That's a high probability, or the other side of the coin is that he pitches 6 shutout innings. It's either disaster or bliss. I'm very curious as to what will happen.
-
If I remember correctly, he had a helluva an arm and played good defense. I could think of worse guys to claim.
-
Rortvedt will probably never be much of a hitter, but he seems to be a solid catcher. Nevertheless, it's cool to see him healthy again and playing in the big leagues, even if he's starting games for those evil Yankees.

Front Office Flops As They Fail Twins Bullpen
Doctor Wu replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Looking back, a week ago, it seemed like adding another arm to the bullpen was a no-brainer. With the injuries to Alcala, Stewart and DeLeon (the latter two weren't even expected to contribute at the start of the season, but they ended up being good pickups, however briefly), we are looking a bit thin for reinforcements at this point. But I can also understand not trading for some sort of rental arm and giving up a valuable prospect. Meanwhile, we wait and hope. Maybe Dobnak can be called up and perform well in relief? At this point I'm not sure what, if any, backup plan they have in case of yet another injury.- 20 replies

3 Stats that Define the 2023 Twins
Doctor Wu replied to Cody Pirkl's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
And then there are all the strikeouts, and more strikeouts ... hey, we are leading the league in something at least. We might also mention Correa's tendency this year to hit into double plays. I think he's among the league leaders in that category too, but fact check me on that.- 13 replies

Minor League Report (8/5): The Bats Are Alright
Doctor Wu replied to Matt Braun's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
Wow, so many impressive performances on the farm, a lot of highlights to enjoy. Thanks for keeping us in the loop! Great to see Austin Martin getting some hits. Show us your stuff! And Willie Joe Garry, Jr. delivers for his callup to AA. I'm impressed with this kid. I think we could end up seeing him with the Twins at some point in the future. Most likely a utility guy, but then again he could blossom into player as good as another former Twins prospect such as Lamonte Wade.- 20 replies

I think Larnach can certainly hit better than Gallo at this point, but not sure about his fielding skills at that position.- 20 replies

Meanwhile, over in Baltimore it looked like Twins Appreciation Day, with Gibson (another big day with 9 K's), Coulombe, and Cano combining to defeat the Mets.
-
Well, I spoke too soon. They Rays have now used Littell as a proper starter twice, and in the game on Friday he pitched 6 shutout innings and only gave up 3 hits and 1 walk. Only struck out 1 batter, but all in all a good performance. That game the Rays won easily, but they lost yesterday to the Tigers and a Baddoo home run.
-
And the Marlins DFA'd Smeltzer again yesterday.
-
Good points. Castro has certainly been a pleasant surprise this year, especially with his speed and getting some hits when we need them to win games.

Are the Front Office's Jobs Secure?
Doctor Wu replied to Cody Pirkl's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I'm not as disgusted with the front office as some posters are. Yeah, many things could have been done differently, or better, but overall they have been far from a disaster. That said, we can only be patient for so long. We need to start winning some playoff games. I don't foresee any changes soon. I give them another full year before any sort of decisions might happen.- 79 replies

I'm not so sure. I like Gordon's energy, his speed, his versatility, and occasional power. If he's healthy, I think he can contribute to the team down the stretch.
-
Well, it's certainly a convenient time to have an injury. And actually, I hope that there HAS been a physical problem that has affected Ryan's recent performances. Something has obviously gone south for him recently. And hey, Keuchel is worth a shot at this point. If he's pounded in August, just go and release him.

Very happy, and excited, to see this new batch of promotions, plus the debut by Jenkins and others. Go with the youth, and Go Twins!

Twins Top Prospect Brooks Lee Promoted to Triple-A
Doctor Wu replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
I didn't notice those moves yet, but more exciting news. And well-deserved promotions! -
maybe the long-lost cousin? Actually, there WAS a Pedro Lopez that pitched briefly for Washington about 12 years ago.

Jax came through indeed, but Duran coughed up another run in his inning, something he's been doing more and more lately. Right now I'm wondering if he's the guy we want pitching with the game on the line or not?

Another timely hit from Michael A. Taylor. He's been another one of those steady but underappreciated players on the team this year. Seems like he was signed as "insurance" in case Buxton wasn't ready to start the season in the field, and we all know how that's worked out. No, Taylor is not a .300 hitter, but he's come alive at the right times this year, and I'm happy we have him on the team.
