Twins Select Quentin Young at #54 in the 2025 MLB Draft

His comp for himself is Elly De La Cruz.  That would be sweet. I suspect he ends up at 3B though.

He will.  On paper I love this draft.  Solid high floor in round #1.  Little more risk but great projectability in the comp.  And shoot for the moon in 2&3.  Great strategy.

So, his confidence is causing delusions?

Hopefully his work ethic and weight management are better than his two uncles and doesn't derail his career like theirs.

I think it would more come down to his attitude towards everything. Maybe he won't throw a bat at an umpire like his uncle did. Also, I'm sure he can accumulate more than 1.0 War for a Twins...

This seems reckless or lazy.  The Twins need guys who understand inherently how to hit.  This guy doesn't.  Twins have shown no abiity to develop a good hitter, much less turn a bad hitter around.  I'm sure when he hits it, it goes far.  That can be said of tens of thousands of failed hitters before him.

Young struggled badly in the summer and fall of 2024, with a 39 percent whiff rate at tracked events (per Synergy Sports data) and huge trouble catching up to even average velocity. He spent the offseason reworking his own swing, though, and had a strong enough spring to put him back on the map for at least teams that still scout players beyond data and video. He’s improved his plate discipline and swing decisions, and he’s much more balanced through contact as he’s getting his front leg down more consistently. He has plus power right now, although he probably has a 40 hit tool even after the adjustments, and you’re betting on him continuing to make improvements in pro ball. He has a 70 arm, so while he’s not going to stick at shortstop, he might be able to handle third and should have a defensive floor in right field — and if he doesn’t hit, I wonder if someone sees if he can pitch. He’s committed to LSU.

If he has any integrity, he will.  These picks are not made with fingers crossed.  The Twins would have checked on the signing parameters and $$$ before taking him, perhaps or probably in the last minutes.  If somehow there becomes a bidding war, you just let him go to LSU, because you've gotten all the info you need about who he is.

Not sure which would be a bigger red flag, blood relationship w/ Delmond (in the running with Herr and Knoblauch as the biggest horse's arses in Twins history) or "recovering from 2024 Tommy John surgery" .

Wonder how he'll do in the field? 

I still have a vivid memory of Delmon Young turning a routine one-hop single in left field into a triple. It was a train wreck waiting to happen.

Carsten Sabathia looks good. Smooth and fluid swing. He's still undrafted.

TJ surgery for position players is not a big deal.  Now, being connected to the Youngs could be an issue based on their history as players.  However, they also had big talent too.

Big wasted talent... and in Delmond's case a lot of "I just don't care" about many facets of the game.  Paying attention first and foremost...

And the TJ surgery is on the 1st round pitcher, not Young.  But this is the Falvey-led Twins,  so maybe he's had it too!

Not saying he's the same player, but he's this year's "Winokur" pick. The super high ceiling prospect with at least 1 big question mark. But it's nice to be able to grab players like that once a draft...every other at least...because when you get it right you usually get a star type of player.

Marek Houston is the most diminutive Day 1 pick of the Twins and stands 6'3"....If none of these guys can play baseball - Maybe the NBA Summer League?? The young Mr. Young raised the "Winokur Pick" in my mind as well...Probably not as refined defensively or flexible position wise but a bat potential to drool about....

That's going to be my mantra on this one. he's not his uncle. 

Hopefully he's not genetically predisposed to being an awful defensive player. Dmitri was a fine hitter. Delmon never lived up to expectations, but had some quality seasons at the plate. Both were awful in the field.

Yeah, I cringed too.  Quentin is obviously his own individual and may have a completely different personality, but Delmon is one of my least favorite Twins of recent history. 

That Garza and Bartlett for Young and Harris trade has to go down as one of the worst  Twins trades this century.

Emphasis on "hopefully" but its another reason to be thankful for the DH.  That's a role he could fill well. Personally I think it works best when a team has one main consistent DH like a David Ortiz or Nelson Cruz type

Being a DH is a challenging role to fill physically mentally,  its not as simple as just showing up to hit.

Wow, you’re really digging up some dark memories. The trade for Delmon Young was made by Terry Ryan, then Bill Smith took over and made even more blunders.

Remember trading away Carlos Gómez to the Brewers for J.J. Hardy, only to ship Hardy and Brendan Harris to Baltimore for practically nothing—just Jim Hoey and some guy named Jacobson who never made it to the majors?

On top of that, the Twins released Craig Breslow so Hoey could pitch. Hoey ended up throwing 24 innings for the Twins, then never pitched in MLB again. Meanwhile, Breslow went on to pitch for nine more seasons.

Being a GM is an incredibly tough job, so we have to give these guys some room for error. But recalling those terrible trades from 2007 to 2009 just shows how badly the Twins got set back. If they had just held onto Garza and Bartlett… wow, maybe we’d could have celebrated a third World Series championship team.

Practially falling over with every swing, lurching left, right, forward, his head jerking... With that approach, major league pitchers would toy with him, make him look like a fool. 

There's a hitting drill where the batter stands on an inflated inner tube, to make sure they stay centered. I'd have young Quentin standing on an inner tube for the next six months. During that time, I'd work him on drastically reducing his trigger zone. He needs to be a power hitter with a stingy zone. Otherwise, he might not make it out of AA. 

Also, if he's had TJ surgery, then it's outfield or nothing. Those infield snap throws are much harder on the elbow than a big outfield heave, where you get a couple big strides into the throw, plus full body rotation. So, we have a possible good corner OF, with some possible power, if he can get his balance centered and narrow his zone.

The Wilson Ramos for Matt Capps trade looked terrible at the time too

Hmm. He’s related to Delmon and he looks like Luis Cine. Doesn’t give me much confidence.
