MLB Trade Rumors posted that the O's want and need SP at the front of the rotation.  Twins could potentially move either or both of Lopez and Ryan.

O's top prospect is the interesting Samuel Basallo.  LH hitter with tons of contact and power.  Defensively he is a big young man who can play 1B and C, although he needs work on the C apparently.  If the Twins retain Jeffers, he could be the 2nd C and otherwise play 1B as his power and hitting justifies 1B.

Does this make any sense for both teams?

(This is not the whole package, just framework for a deal).

It could.  Ryan is valued at 47.0 while Basallo is valued at 58.4 so theoretically, the Twins would need to add Kendry Rojas (10.2) or some other similar value to make it work on the BBTV model.

However, BBTV is not the be all-end all, just a guide of sorts.  The Twins clearly won the Pablo Lopez-Luis Arraez trade purely based on "value."  But Arraez went on to win a couple batting titles for Miami, so the Marlins didn't LOSE the trade, it worked out well for BOTH teams.

Ryan is a more finished product.  An All Star pitcher.  Basallo didn't bomb in his MLB debut last year but he didn't exactly SHINE either.  His power potential is tremendous and he plays 2 positions the Twins desperately need some young talent at...C & 1B.

As desperate as the Orioles are for a solid SP, they may not want to give Basallo up for anything.  Trading power potential like that in today's baseball where POWER can forgive a multitude of strikeouts is hard for teams to do.  It's like the Twins considering trading Matt Wallner.

There is risk involved.  But when the NEED of the team is so acute, as in the Orioles need for an All Star SP, or as I have pointed out in other posts, with the Twins trading Wallner for a young, Major League catcher (Teel, Quero, Ford) giving up that prodigious power to be able to fill a gaping hole in the lineup or rotation may be too tempting to walk away from.

I don't think Basallo is available. I mean, everyone is available at the right price, but I think the cost for Basallo would be more than any team is willing to pay. Rutschman may be on his way out and Basallo is their future. The price tag on guys who debut at 20 years old is astronomical.

Any trade of Ryan or Lopez to Baltimore would probably return Trey Gibson, Ike Irish, or Wehiwa Aloy as the centerpiece, not Basallo. I don't think Baltimore is a good match. Ryan Mountcastle is the type of guy you can get off their major league team, and I don't see the fit for him in Minnesota.

I'd throw in Coby Mayo as an option.

I also think, arguably, now is the time to truly listen on Ryan. I do not know if Baltimore can give the best offer, but I think you have to look at prospect lists and guys who have graduated prospect lists in the past 12 months or so.

I have no want to move Lopez. Not now anyway.

Baltimore signed Basallo to an 8 year plus 1 additional option year (9 total) contract. He is going to be practically free for 6 years. I highly doubt it is possible to pry away Basallo. Give it a shot - Ryan, Roden, Rojas, and Prielipp. Baltimore will say no. Love the idea though.

Not sure who we’d trade but Rutchman might be available.

That would show the commitment that the Pohlad’s spoke about when they decided not to sell.

He could be a buy low as his slash stats were down last year. His quality of contact numbers were in line with his career numbers as were his strikeout and walk numbers. His BABIP was much lower than career norms.

This Twins have the prospect pool to make this deal.

I just read another Pablo Lopez to Baltimore article/rumor. The writer referenced the Sonny Gray for Chase Petty trade and stated that Baltimore could send either of Michael Forret or Boston Bateman, #9 and #11 among MLB Oriole prospects. This would be the absolute other end of a Samuel Basallo for Pablo Lopez trade.

I spend almost no time on rumor sites because they are almost 100% lunatic. Yesterday a Met blogger wrote that his Mets needed Pablo Lopez. He was offering Nolan McLean, Jonah Tong, Brandon Sproat, and another guy for Lopez. Maybe it wasn't a Met fan. Let's hope not. NYCTK would have a stroke reading that stuff.

I generally see better suggestions from some people on Twins Daily and let's just admit .... we have no idea what we are doing.

Also if you have been reading Jim Bowden, stop it.

If the Twins trade Pablo Lopez for Bateman or Forret, ........
