So what if Phillips was staring down the reduced playing time and requested the trade?  The Vikings clearly like Redmond, LDR, and TID as rotational pieces and Phillips just wasn't comfortable with his role?

Coller was saying that during joint practices that Phillips had been playing mostly with the 2nd team and Redmond was getting a bunch of 1st team reps. So it seems he was getting passed up by the younger guys.

OK, so the Vikings are paying 7.5M this year and the Jets are on the hook for the rest of the contract. Also, it looks like his cap hit was 4.2M if they cut him after the season. So the Vikings are paying 3.3M extra now when they have the money to improve the cap situation next season.

Phillips' 2026 salary is completely unguaranteed and the Vikings could have cut him at any time and recouped that, so in reality the Jets are only saving us $3.3M (of 2025 salary) from the deal. This move wasn't made to save money, it's about making room for younger players and pick up a couple Day 3 picks that are probably going to be on the table in other trades made in the next week.

The more I step back from this, the better I feel. I think they like the younger players!

If Redmond, Taki snack or anyone of the kids end up all pro in the next few seasons, it is definitely going to be viewed as a great move.

and if JJM throws for 12k yards this year, he'll be one of the greatest draft moves of all time.

All the kid has done is win. Id rather win football games and championships than have a Phillip Rivers that throws for thousands of yards and rarely wins.

Not that PFF is great anymore.....but Phillips has gotten worse (below average, actually) each of the last three years.....

True, but he was the best interior run stuffer on the #1 run defense in the league so I don't know how much I buy into his 2024 grade. He does bring absolutely nothing in the pass game which probably knocks the grade down.

If they step up and contribute, it definitely helps KAM's reputation for talent acquisition.

It does make sense. He's solid and knows the system. He looked ok in limited games last year.

Yeah, time ran out to get someone else in the door. He will be a solid short yard possession WR for McCarthy early on in the season. Evidently today is Thielen’s 35th bday so I’ve got to imagine this is the final season for him in the NFL.

Selling Howell for more than we got him for after having a bad camp is unexpected, but hey we'll take it. Wentz is an upgrade and has had experience in the McVay system and can be a fine backup QB while Brosmer is groomed to take over the job next year.

I hope he trades up next year with all these late picks.....

I expect some will get used in a trade for a WR in the coming days.

Yeah, I was surprised as well, but then it did start to add up when reports later in the day said that Aiden O'Connell went down and the Raiders were desperate for a backup and the Lions said Hendon Hooker needed a change of scenery. Free agent backup QBs are now headlined by CJ Beathard.

2 weeks until opening day. Time is running out to get another WR in the building and up to speed on the offense. Our WR room looks really weak with Addison suspended and Nailor evidently has his hand in a cast.

I expect a deal tomorrow. Thielen and a 6th for a 4th. Something like that. Not a HUGE fan, but he should be good for JJ.

I read Jacobi Myers wants out in Las Vegas. I’d prefer him over Thielen if the cost is close

Sure, would much rather have him. But I can't see Vegas dealing him for a reasonable cost.....but I've been wrong before.

I'd have given him one more year to get healthy....

Same but I get it if they think he’s not healthy anymore. He was an old CB prospect (24) when they drafted him. He’s already 26 - same age as Cam Akers who was released again by the Saints and it feels like he’s been in the league forever.

Blackmon was playing deep into the 2nd and 3rd preseason games, and not particularly well, but I guess they lost confidence their in him... and it wasn't long ago people were citing him as a success from the 2023 draft class. Now that entire class is just Addison and Jay Ward, yikes. This franchise has been abysmal at drafting CBs, we haven't had a true success since Xavier Rhodes, though now we'd kill just to even have a middling starter like Trae Waynes with one of our picks. It's a shame we never got to see what Khyree Jackson could do.

Feels like WR and CB are musts at this point, and they have the ammo - at least Day 3 picks - to go get those guys.

2024 draft class early returns are also bad except Will the Thrill at kicker. The only thing that matters is nailing the JJ McCarthy pick. If Kwesi didn’t do that, plus Turner being a rotational at best guy right now, he’s gotta give up drafting to anyone else.

Myers wants out because he wants an extension. He's really underrated but I can't imagine the Vikings would give him that extension.
