3 years 12.5 million. Good deal for him it seems. Sounds like he is a good up the middle defender who makes a lot of contact.

If we are making this Twins related, this certainly takes them out of the running for a team that would look to acquire Willi Castro. At least that's what I would guess.

Diego Cartaya looks like a trade for a prospect in the #20-40 range. Defense was an issue for him as it is for Dalton Rushing. The Dodgers are increasingly using Rushing as an outfielder and first baseman while hoping he can learn catching. When i tuned into the Dodgers minor league games to watch Rushing I was very impressed by his bat and very much unimpressed by his overall skills as a catcher. Maybe the Twins can send someone like Ben Ross or Yunior Severino to the Dodgers for Cartaya.

Oh wow, Diego Cartaya was designated to make room for Kim in LA.

He was such a highly ranked prospect not that long ago. He hasn't hit a ton, but no doubt someone puts in a claim.

Wonder if the Twins try to get him somehow?

Came here for this. Here's the MLBTR report on Cartaya DFA:

If they believe in the defense and think there's something to work with offensively, then a team like the Twins without great long-term prospects at catcher absolutely should try to get Cartaya. Maybe even worth a minor trade to skip the waiver line, but at least put in a claim.

Dodgers, like Yankees, get hype on their prospects. It's pretty natural with those big markets.

The Dodgers will be trying to work out a trade in the next few days. I always forget the sequencing of DFA, claims, and that process. Usually, if a player is seen as having any value at all, a trade is completed. BTV had him at 20 last year and at 2 a year later.

The Twins probably need a young catcher more than any other team in baseball. The Dodgers aren't done subtracting from their 40-man roster either. They still want to bring back Kershaw, for example.

There are several players on the fringes of the Dodgers 40-man who are interesting (Andy Pages, James Outman, a half-dozen injured pitchers, a half-dozen AAA pitchers)

MLB.com has an amazingly fantastic glossary of terms and this is one that they cover:

I remembered 10 days, and it used to be, but now the DFA process is limited to 7 days.  The (separate) waiver process, in order to outright a player to the minors, requires 3 days.  A team can fit those 3 days into the 7-day window any way they wish, as I understand it - and the waiver is not necessarily announced publicly.  But trade him or cut him or outright him, they have to make their decision in 7 days.

Agree with this. I'm not offering the Dodgers much though. I have much more confidence in all of Larnach, Wallner, Rodriguez, Jenkins, Keaschall, and even McCusker than I do for Pages and Outman. Apparently the Dodgers aren't too high on these guys either or they would get more playing time.

As far as young catchers go, the cost would be high for what we need. I would pay quite a bit. Rushing-no. Teel cost the White Sox Crochet so he isn't available. I have no idea if Quero (MIL), Romo (COL), Ford (SEA), or Basallo (BAL) are available at any price. Basallo might be more a 1B, but he will rake. Ford may not be a true catcher but he is very athletic. The Twins plan may be to go year to year with veteran catchers, which often works. I would try to squeeze Romo, Ford, and especially Quero away from their squads. Can't hurt to try.

With the Trade of Gavin Lux and the DFA of Cartaya. The Dodgers roster sits at 39.

Could me making room for Kershaw. Could be getting ready for a young pitcher from Japan who will make his decision after January 15.

The Padres don't have a starting or backup catcher on their roster right now. Ethan Salas is still probably at least a year away.

But I wouldn't mind the Twins getting in on Cartaya here. Curious where he gets moved to
