Article: Deibinson Romero is knocking on the door

Assuming Plouffe is healthy (soon), I just can't imagine a scenerio where Romero comes up. Maybe if he wouldn't have missed his opportunity in spring training and through the first 5-6 months of the season with the visa issues. That said, if Plouffe is out even longer (for whatever reason), then Romero makes a lot of sense.

When Gardy floats a name, it usually, eventually, happens.

Well, we know Sano will be here in 2015, why not call up Romero and see what you have, while there is any kind of opening at all? It's not like Plouffe has proven anything. If he was judged like Gibson, he'd be in AAA for sure.

Exactly what would it hurt to call him up, and get a look? Nothing. Not a thing.

If Plouffe gets injured again and needs to be on the 15 day DL I see them making it happen. The production at 3b has to be better. Hopefully Plouffe just comes back and goes on a June feeding binge like last season.

Assuming Plouffe comes back healthy, what about him as a trading chip? A cost controlled, 20 home runs a year 3rd baseman. Having Romero (and Sano right behind him) opens this possibility, I think.

I'm guessing they'd like to see a bit more extended AAA performance from Romero -- his minor league career was pretty dismal prior to a solid campaign repeating AA last year at age 25, but they've held onto him for a long time so obviously they like him (or liked his potential). A call-up at some point this season should be in the cards, though, before we can lose him again in the offseason. He arguably should have been up over Colabello recently, definitely a better roster fit as a 3B while Plouffe is out. If Plouffe comes back soon, they may have to shoe in Romero as a DH/1B if he keeps producing at AAA.

By the way, why was Colabello activated for the doubleheader instead of a pitcher? With all the hand-wringing about bullpen overuse, seems like an extra pitcher would have been warranted -- indeed, wasn't that the point of the added 26th roster spot for doubleheaders?

I doubt Plouffe has much trade value -- outside of his HR binge last year he hasn't done much nor has he stayed healthy -- although perhaps you could fetch a guy in a similar situation at a different position? Might not be one available that fits for the Twins, though.

Plus, Plouffe is basically a 3B defensively by default right now. Romero and Sano have big question marks in the field too. And we're on track to have a spot at 1B opening up after the season (doesn't seem like Parmelee is staking a claim to anything right now).

Let's let Romero hit at AAA for another month before getting too excited. He is definitely a corner infielder, so that helps his cause some. Injuries (Plouffe, Carroll) and trades (Morneau and/or Plouffe) are almost needed for him, though.

Trade Willingham near the deadline, move Ploufge to LF and then give Romero an audition if he still warrants it.

If the reason the Twins aren't bringing a legit player to the majors is Jamie Carroll, we are all truly doomed. As fans of the Twins, that is.

Im guessing that darn 40 man roster thing

Gardy dropped Romero's name, is anyone shocked? Plouffe has been in his doghouse all year. If Gardy has an eye out for a replacement should we really be surprised?

If they don't want him to bolt somewhere else, he's going to have to be added to the 40 man roster. He started out with tons of promise and then due to injuries and ineffectiveness was largely forgotten about until now.

I can say this. The Twins are carrying 4 middle infielders and are holding a spot on the 40 man for Colabello as well. There are plenty of people they can drop to give Romero a chance, but like others said, they may as well let him play another month or so at Rochester. He can get the call up later in the year as they start extended tryouts for 2014. Plouffe is versatile enough to move to 2B, SS, or LF if needed.

I'd rather see Romero play third than Carroll these days. Romero was a highly regarded prospect and was put on the 40-man roster as a 22-y.o 3 seasons ago. He finally got it together last season. If his house did not burn down last off-season and had his paperwork and made it to ST, he would have fought for a spot on the roster.

Good to see him hit again.
