Chris Schad Verified Member Posted June 10, 2013 Posted June 10, 2013 With the news of Sano being promoted to Double-A, I looked ahead to forecast when the thunderous third baseman could be wearing a Twins uniform. Y! SPORTS
Twins Twerp Provisional Member Posted June 10, 2013 Posted June 10, 2013 Possibly next season id have to say. If he dominates AA, moves to AAA next year, I could see him on the path of Gibson. He is one where the arbitration clock might be an issue. Hicks was one thing, but if Sano plays even close to potential...we are lloking at a massive contract in the future, might as well hold off until the team is closer to contention.
Turd Furgeson Verified Member Posted June 10, 2013 Posted June 10, 2013 I'd say a very minor chance he gets a cup of coffee this year, otherwise if he continues to perform really well we should see him June of next year.

I hope when/if the time comes, they lock him up early like the Rays did with Evan Longoria and the Royals did with Salvador Perez.
Gernzy Verified Member Posted June 10, 2013 Posted June 10, 2013 AA is going to be a big test for him. If he destroys AA pitching, he could be up here sooner then most of us thought.
Badsmerf Verified Member Posted June 10, 2013 Posted June 10, 2013 I look at it as the Arcia schedule. He might get a look in September to get fans excited for next year, but no way they bring him up to start the year like Hicks. The Twins desperately need that extra year with him. Arcia also destroyed AA pitching last year and did not get a call-up. I'd expect to see D Romero before Sano.
Brock Beauchamp Site Manager Posted June 10, 2013 Posted June 10, 2013 Barring injury or unexpected failure, Sano will be in a Twins uniform 12 months from now. There's no way the Twins keep him in AA for much more than half a season and then a couple of months in Rochester to start next season.

A taste in Sept if he does well in AA between now and then. AAA to start '14 with the call up in June if he does well, otherwise Sept.
Siehbiscuit Verified Member Posted June 10, 2013 Posted June 10, 2013 I GREATLY hope Sano can be a June call-up in 2014. Hopefuly he can keep it up at AA and stay around .320/.380/.580. Those are still ridiculous #'s and possibly too unlikely, but I wouldn't put it past him. Sano is the one guy that I actually think the Twins will hold him back based on Super 2 status. If he comes up next year in early-to-mid June, he will be only 21 years old and get to keep him through 2020. Buxton could also be ready to make his debut in September as well and both could be in the starting lineup come 2015!
mcrow Provisional Member Posted June 10, 2013 Posted June 10, 2013 I think he sees the majors for a bit this year, but won't make his big splash until around this time next year. What is impressive is he moved up to high A and increased power and significantly improved overall hitting at the same time. If he does the same to AA the rest of the year he might even start opening day next season if his glove allows it. I wouldn't be surprised at all if he's not in AAA not too long from now if things in AA go well.
ericchri Provisional Member Posted June 10, 2013 Posted June 10, 2013 If he rakes in AA I wouldn't be totally shocked if he got a September call-up. Lord knows the fans are definitely wishing for something to get excited about, you want them to come back out to the stadium next year, give them a taste of the future slugger in the lineup. The lack of 40-man status would make it less likely, but by September they'll easily have 2 or 3 good candidates to drop that wouldn't factor into their future plans. I'm not really expecting it, but I wouldn't be surprised by it.

mikecgrimes Verified Member Posted June 10, 2013 Posted June 10, 2013 Buxton just made a great catch that will make sports center. And now after the replay is over they have gone back to full screen. Finally got a full screen replay. Wow what a catch.

Mike Sixel Old-Timey Member Posted June 10, 2013 Posted June 10, 2013 After the super 2 date in 2104 is my prediction.
Badsmerf Verified Member Posted June 10, 2013 Posted June 10, 2013 The 40-man shouldn't be an issue. There are plenty of guys that can be released from the 40-man at that time. Butera, Carrol, Hermsen just to name a few. That is not even taking into consideration any trades. If Morneau doesn't get dealt before the deadline, he might still be able to pass through waivers and be dealt.
Badsmerf Verified Member Posted June 10, 2013 Posted June 10, 2013 After the super 2 date in 2104 is my prediction.Again, super-2 status is not a concrete date. has at least two years of major league service but less than three, AND is among the top 22 percent for cumulative playing time in the majors in this class of players (and ties), AND was on an active major-league roster for at least 86 days in the previous season. Top 22 percent will be difficult to avoid. Jeremy might have the numbers of these guys, the percent was raised from where it previously was. Off the top of my head I think it used to be 17.8% or something like that.
DaveW Old-Timey Member Posted June 10, 2013 Posted June 10, 2013 If Sano does well in AA he will be up in Sept to get the fans all hot and bothered, again as with the case of Hicks, if Sano is somehow "ready" and earns a starting gig out of the gate in 2014 then you bring him north (still a long shot I think), but again its a great problem to have.
Mike Sixel Old-Timey Member Posted June 10, 2013 Posted June 10, 2013 Again, super-2 status is not a concrete date. has at least two years of major league service but less than three, AND is among the top 22 percent for cumulative playing time in the majors in this class of players (and ties), AND was on an active major-league roster for at least 86 days in the previous season. Off the top of my head I think it used to be 17.8% or something like that. That's why I didn't give a date...... I hope my prediction is wrong, I hope he's up when he's ready, regardless of arbitration or super 2 dates. They have shown, with Hicks, that the board worries more about this (again, one data point does not a trend make, but it is consisten with their talk, so I believe them), than the Twins do. So, it is certainly possible he's up opening day next year. I would be surprised (like, less than 10% chance) if he's up this year. But I might go to that game.....
greengoblinrulz Provisional Member Posted June 10, 2013 Posted June 10, 2013 When he should & when he will are 2 different questions. Think it'll be interesting how he does in AA as many teams have been calling up their stars @ 20/21yrs old straight from AA but not as a Sept recall
diehardtwinsfan Old-Timey Member Posted June 10, 2013 Posted June 10, 2013 Sano will get a September call up this year IF AND ONLY IF he needs to be added to the 40 man roster this offseason. It is my understanding that he currently is not on the 40 man. If he needs to be added this offseason, then they can add him this fall and call him up and take a look at him. If he doesn't need to be put on it this offseason, then there's absolutely no reason to potentially burn an option year on him not knowing if he's going to be up to stay.
Siehbiscuit Verified Member Posted June 10, 2013 Posted June 10, 2013 So, it is certainly possible he's up opening day next year. I would be surprised (like, less than 10% chance) if he's up this year. QUOTE] I'm not entirely disagreeing with you, because of Aaron Hicks' situation this year. BUT... You make the statement that it is "possible" for him to be up opening day, but "would be surprised if he's up this year." I can agree with them independantly, but not together. Sano could make a case to be the everyday and opening day 3B next year with a great spring training and a great 2nd half in 2013, but IMO he needs to come up and test the waters as a Sept. call up to win the opening day gig (see Aaron Hicks). On the 2nd sentence I also agree that a September call up is unlikely this year (and without the call-up he will need to work for a while in Rochester). I guess, I just want to believe that the Twins have learned a little from the Aaron Hicks situation. No MLB time in September and no AAA time and boom you give him a opening day job. That is a huge jump. An even bigger deal, to the Twins possibly, is that Sano doesn't have to be added to the 40 man this offseason, but after the 2014 season!
LaBombo Verified Member Posted June 10, 2013 Posted June 10, 2013 It's great to see Sano crush high A pitching, and fingers crossed that he can continue that at AA New Britain eventually. But the kid has just over 1000 minor league at bats and fewer than 200 games played at third, where his defense, while improved, is still very much a work in progress. Also, the Twins FO people who deemed Hicks "ready" have apparently traded a year of team control in his prime for 3 months of a .153/.221/.267 line against righthanders. If they repeat that same lunacy with Sano and he fails anywhere nearly as spectacularly as Hicks, then those people need to be replaced with people who know what they're doing.
Turd Furgeson Verified Member Posted June 11, 2013 Posted June 11, 2013 I seriously doubt Sano struggles like Hicks did early on. Hicks had almost always been about projection in the minors over what he was currently doing. Sano has produced in a big way at every step of the way through the minors. The guy has some significant hitting upside and I cannot fathom a Slugging percentage of .267 or anything close to that. He may hit in the low .230s or something like that if he really struggles his first year but the power should still be there.
RodneyKline Provisional Member Posted June 11, 2013 Posted June 11, 2013 I would rather see Buxton. That kid is a future superstar. There are a lot of things that have to go right for Sano. Can he play defense? Will he strike out too much? Can he hit Major league pitching? Can he hit the breaking balls that Arcia is also having trouble with? Buxton's questions are when will he be old enough for them to let him come up north and that's about it. I would love for them to break all their rules and let him play up here now. We need a CFer and it will not hurt him one bit. Let him play until Hicks comes back. I know he has to be on the 40 and the 25 but that's ok too. I believe this kid is a future superstar. I hope Sano is too but if I had to bet...
