The Twins signed someone to a major league contract! Josh Staumont, formerly of the Royals, was non-tendered after an injury plagued season. The Twins signed him today. He would figure to have a shot to help in the bullpen.

The thrill of the off season  , maybe in 2024 as the calendar turns to January  we could have a big thrill going into Twins fest ...

I am surprised there isn't a little more positivity regarding this signing. Most likely if the Twins signed him they are optimistic about the medicals.  I am curious how far along he is in the rehab process, generally it looks like a 4-6 month recovery, then most pitchers are not at a level to pitch on the mlb level for the next year.

In watching him pitch the last several years, I thought he had high end stuff. Maybe he loses the stuff if he had the less invasive procedure maybe he doesn't.  This ultimately come down to does he regain the velocity, and then is the slider (which is evidenced by last years stats) - a more effective pitch than the curve ball that hitters were laying off of which he did not seem to be able to keep in the zone.  I would say this is better than a lottery ticket,  there is definitely a potential high end reliever here.   You are only paying 1 million for the option to see if you can rehab him this year to be an option next year in my opinion.  He may regain the pitching feel sooner than others, but that is a lot to expect.    May be an end of the year arm to throw in the mix is the best bet I think on this signing.

Let's be candid:  This is a gamble.  Gentleman had a good arm, suffered injury, performance lapsed, and he had procedure.

Most do not recover from that surgery to return to good pitching form.  Fingers crossed for the Twins.

According to NIH, it’s a highly successful procedure for MLB pitchers. It’s just really rare

edit to add: as a person (admittedly non-mlb pitcher) who has gone through PT/OT to recover from Thoracic Outdlet syndrome, surgery was on the table for me, but through non-surgical methods my physical therapist was able to spread the distance between my ribs to allow nerve sensations and blood to flow again. Super painful!

Good find.  Couple points.

We don't know if he had the rib resection procedure.

TOS is notoriously difficult to diagnose.  Often times it is a fallback Dx after all else comes up negative. As a result, not all TOS procedures actually address the perceived problem.

But I hope they did a great job on this young man and he flourishes.
