So are we going to get a thread now every time Benson has a decent game?

Just so you know, Joe Benson is still alive as of Monday, May 27, 2013. I will keep you updated.

Repeat from game thread: what do you suppose it would cost to hire away the Rangers AA hitting coach?

2 homers in 2 games. I am just so glad that both the Twins and many around here believed that there were 40 better options for the 40-man roster . . .

He hit two homers in AA. Woopty freaking crap.

Three months ago, he had the opportunity to be the opening day CF for the Twins.

I don't care how hard those homers were hit, he's dug himself into a deep hole that its going to take awhile to get out of

After tonight, it's now 3 HRs in three games. Plus, he added a triple. The Twins brass was apparently correct that a change of scenery would be for the best for all parties.

For me, I just enjoy seeing a really good guy seeing success it's been a difficult couple of years for him, so it's nice to see. I'm actually happy for him. He needed a change, a change of scenery. Yes, this s just AA, but so much of this game is confidence.

I'm not even upset that the Twins let him go. Just happy for the guy.

Yup. Hopefully a happy ending.

Homer, triple, and outfield assist in tonight's game. I'm glad that the Twins have 40 guys more deserving on the 40-man roster, though. PHEW!!

Keep in mind that Benson had only about 4/5 or so of a season of badness with the Twins. Totally worthy of just letting him go . . .

Still bitter about Gomez too huh. Liriano. LaTroy Hawkins, lew ford, kubel, delmonzy young, slowey, big papi, aj peerzinsky, joe nathan, cuddy, jj hardy, etc.

Shane, you do realize he left the Twins organization practically in full-fetal position? This game as much as any, perhaps except golf, is so mental. The guy had completely checked out, for whatever reason(s).

Be that as it may, this is still close to 4/5ths on the Twins for not aiding Benson in unlocking whatever demons he was battling. If all it took to unlock the conundrum that Benson found himself in was a change of scenery, this obviously could have been handled better.

I think it would be really interesting to track the posters who are ready to give up on Hicks but think Benson's getting a raw deal.

Are there ANY that have given up on Hicks?

You have no idea that Benson "checked out." He's never shown the ability to hit above AA. He struck out in over 25% of his AA at bats. He's old for his level and didn't improve. Why can't it be that he never developed the plate discipline needed? Why does it have to be some sort of outside factor, like mental games, or blaming the Twins? He was a good 2nd round draft choice who didn't make it. There are literally thousands of guys just like him in baseball.

I agree with all of this, except "he never developed the plate discipline needed." Been through this on the other thread, but Benson had good plate discipline, and maintained pretty good OBPs throughout his minor league career. Benson's problems with Ks are due to issues making contact, not a lack of plate discipline.

Well, earlier today: "I still think Arcia is going to be a hell of a hitter in the majors one day but Hicks, I'm about ready to write off."

All eyewitness reports, from TD participants, to Rochester media members, up to, and including from the Twins FO itself, indicate that Benson had checked out and was his own worst enemy. This is really beyond dispute. Yes, the upper levels of baseball do present a challenge, Benson's athleticism indicates he is better than the crash-and-burn numbers he produced at AAA and AA, both this year and last. The mental aspects to the game ( ie, the endless and inevitable repetition of failure over success at the plate) appears to be Benson's major impediment.
