They should have traded for Castillo, not Mahle.

They could not have matched the Mariners offer. They didn’t have a prospect that was close to Marte.

There were three playoff caliber starters moved at the deadline. Castillo was out of their reach and Montas ended up injured like Mahle.

It is fair to criticize the deadline trades but it is the real risk of being a buyer at the deadline, Any that criticize must also be strong advocates for not going for it at the trade deadline and never be in the role of a buyer. You can’t have it both ways.

I believe that the Lopez family and both teams will be winners in this trade.  I believe that Floro will perform as well or better than Lopez would have performed as a Twin.  I also believe that Lopez will perform better for the Marlins than he would have for Twins since he will be closer to his family.

A lot of comments regarding the Mahle trade failure, which necessitated the Arraez/ Lopez trade.  If the Arraez trade hadn't been made, where is Julien today?  I doubt that he would be on the Twins roster.  Maybe the league will figure out Julien, but to date he shown the willingness to hit the pitch where its at (i.e. an outside pitch hit to left field) the same as Arraez.  Only with a lot more power.  Sometimes trades work out just not in the way you expected.

My dream end of the year lineup would be:

Correa SS, EJ DH, Polanco 2B, AK 1B, Lewis 3B, Kep RF, Buxton CF, Wallner LF, Jeffers C.

I am happy for all X Twins to do well (just not against the Twins).  So who do you remove to make room for Arraez, Steer and CES?

"It is interesting that Miami makes this deal in that Floro clearly has the better underlying numbers"    Not really.  Lopez throws a 97 mph fast ball and sinker, you can't teach velocity.  He always has potential to improve his numbers by tweaking his off speed pitches or delivery.  Most importantly, there's an identifiable reason (his kid's health) for his loss of focus.  He'll most certainly perform better once he wraps his head around it.  Time heals everything.

I agree totally! Probably would have had to part ways with another big prospect on top of what they gave for Mahle though. Marte was a top 10-20 prospect last year so put in place another one of the twins top guys from last year. Hindsight 20/20.

The Twins had no one close to matching Marte. They could not have made that deal. That was clear at the time. Maybe hindsight isn’t always 20/20.

That would have resulted in them giving away even more of the future and they still would not have won the division in 2023 so how would they be better off?   What they should have done was basically stand pat on the ML club with the exception of a couple rental RPs.  They should have kept CES and dealt Steer or Steer plus a pitching prospect for an RH outfield or catching prospect that was near major league ready.  We would have CES to fill the role of the RH bat we need now and we would still have Cano plus a good RH hitting OF prospect.

They would have Castillo this year as well instead of watching Joe Ryan give up 4 bombs a game.

Castillo's xFIP is 3.63.  Ryan's 3.69.  They both have produced 2.2 fWAR.  Ryan will be here for 4 more years.  Castillo would have been a free agent not to mention the salary that could be allocated elsewhere.  Trading the type of assets it would have taken to get Castillo for the difference between Castillo and Ryan is really ill-conceived.
