The Padres' 2023 season has been an immense disappointment, rivaling only that of the New York Mets. They had aspirations to finally win the National League West but, despite their positive run differential, sit in fourth place, ten games back of the division lead.

So it makes sense to sell, right? Especially their duo of left-handed pitchers with expiring contracts. Right?

Nope.

While Blake Snell doesn't fit that well with the Twins needs over the next two months, Josh Hader would be the best possible addition to a bullpen that is lacking in quality depth. Hader would immediately slot into a dual-closer role with Jhoan Duran, pushing every else up an inning. It would be one of the key pieces the Twins need to go from mediocre to good down the stretch.

Still don't think this is the year to go all in,  just like I didn't think last year was the year.  We have a few less chips in the minors but still pretty good. It doesn't look like Hader is available and is likely out of the Twins price range anyways.

Hader would be interesting especially with the way the last couple games have gone in the 9th.  If Duran can't be an every day closer then someone else with a resume of closing experience will be a huge get.  Whether or not SD is going to be selling is the question to be answered this week.  They are one bad week away from being buried in the WC hunt in the NL and it would take a miracle for them + calamities for every other franchise for them to make up enough ground to make the playoffs.

Probably some posturing going on by Preller, but it's possible he's going to keep them. He'll likely get some real good offers for both of them. I'd love to see Snell or Hader here, but that's a pipe dream.

I think it's a dumb move by SD but I get it. They made an all in push a couple of years ago, I'd guess that next year is the last year before they have to finally fold and tear it all apart. You'd think they might move these rental guys for players who can help next year and in the future, but 5.5 games back isn't a huge deficit if a team ends up getting hot, especially if they're chasing unexpected clubs like AZ, CIN, MIA and SF. AZ is already starting to fall apart, someone's going to take their spot in the playoffs for sure.

The Padres are generally in a weird spot. They have one of the worst farms in baseball, yet their future is still bright because they have Machado, Bogaerts, Tatis, Darvish, Musgrove, and Cronenworth in SD for the next long while. In 2023, they don't want to waste a year of pre-$500M contract Juan Soto. But they'd need to buy to compete, and I doubt they really want to empty more of their farm on a team five games below .500.

In my opinion, Preller is one of the worst GMs in baseball, as he has been given both time to rebuild and a top-5 budget and has turned it into two playoff appearances since 2014. If I were him, I would look at what the White Sox just got for Giolitto and Lopez and try to get something similar for Snell/Hader (probably more), but knowing him, he'll trade away half of his top prospects for a big name like a Jack Flaherty or a Salvador Perez.

I just read that Bob Nightengale from USA Today is saying that the Pads will trade Snell and Hader. Who knows what's going to happen? Anything is possible in the next 4-5 days.
