2016 Opening Day Starting Rotation Prediction Thread

Just for funzies, let's make some guesses and pull it up in a couple years.

 

1. Alex Meyer

2. Kyle Gibson

3. Liam Hendriks

4. Vance 'Romance' Worley

5. Jon Gray

 

Hopefully I get 2 of 5.

I think the hope is something like this:

 

Gibson

Meyer

Worley

May

Manaea

 

Barring injuries, I think Meyer/Gibson top of the rotation will be pretty good. I know they could still flame out or under perform but I think both will be pretty good for us.

 

Obviously, Worley will still be under team control in 2016 so he should have a spot.

 

I think we're giving up too fast on May. He's in AA and the Twins will give him all the time to fix his control. It'll take some time but it he does, he should be a solid rotation arm that eats a lot of innings.

 

I think we take Manaea at #4. He finishes this year at A+, 2014 at AA and then gets his feet wet in 2015 and starts the season with us in 2016.

 

Berrios could fly through the system though and be part of this, too.

I doubt Jon Gray falls to the Twins at 4... I'll be ecstatic if he does, as will pretty much everyone on this board. He won't be the 5th starter either, as I suspect he would be in the big leagues by 2015 at the latest (baring injury).

 

This too me highlights the Twins need for additional pitching. While I'd be quite happy if all of these guys make it to MN, the reality with pitching prospects is that some of them will fail or get hurt, and there's not a ton of other guys in the high minors who inspire confidence.

Scott Diamond has a much higher chance of being in the Twins rotation that Hendriks (right or wrong). Hendriks seems like a guy that the Twins just don't like how he pitches and will need some to luck and patience to prove himself to the Twins management. Diamond has performed like a guy the Twins would give an early contract. Hendriks will be in the rotation for much of the time between now and 2016, but he'll be the one they kick out of the rotation without worrying about it. Hendriks=Slowey, Diamond=Blackburn.

May & Hendriks would be available at AAA, because odds are good that one of those guys is injured or doesn't develop, etc. Actually Hendriks might be out of options by then

I'm hopeful that something crazy happens and we get Gray. Also, I forgot Diamond so therefore he is not in the Twins future plans, obviously. lol

Diamond signs a Denard Span-esge team-friendly extension this offseason and the Twins move him before the 2016 season to make room for Berrios. Worley takes his two pitch repetoir to the pen temporarily where he can also provide inssurance as the long man/spot starter.

Wimmers was drafted one year after Gibson, but TJ surgery and not having advanced up the ladder as far, puts him likely two years behind him to get in the MLB rotation. Hopefully, he can rebound similar to Gibson and earn the 5th spot by 2016. I don't think the Twins will take Manaea so the honorable mention spot goes to Berrios, a young 22 year old by then.

I'll go with this: In alphabetical order--Berrios, Diamond, May, Meyer, Worley. I think Berrios will get here before one of Meyer or May (probably May) despite his tender years. Baxendale intrigues me as well and there is a chance that a current rotation member might stick around, as well.

Terry Ryan told me that Wimmers would be on the same program that Gibson was on. I don't know at what level he will pitch late this summer, but it will be time for him to advance quickly if he has overcome the arm injury and Steve Blass disease.

1) Meyer (but I think he ends up as more of a 2-3 starter in most rotations)

2) FA in the Pavano mold

3) Gibson

4) One of the reliever turned starter recent acquisitions

5) Rule 5 addition or Trade

That looks about right minus Shields plus Wimmers or someone else for the 5th starter
