Anyone else listen to the game on the radio last night?? I was planting corn and listening to Gladden tell a hilarious story about beating up Steve Lomberdozzi in 1987. Dazzle can be hard to listen to sometimes, but it's nights like last night that make it worth while.

Yeah, I was listening too to the game last night and heard the story. Dan said it was the first time he told the story on the radio but I thought I'd heard him mention it before...but last night had the most details and was definately funny. I especially like the part during the on-field World Series win celebration and Lombo told Dan to "pick him up". Dan said he could have body-slammed him right there.

Bummed that I missed that part. I thought I had heard their fight was due to one of them fooling around with the other's wife/girlfriend?

Those stories do not make it worth it. Dazzle is not terrible imo, but should stick to being the color guy. Why on earth they switch half way through the game is beyond me. The new guy is super good and then Dazzle comes in and his voice is terrible and his stories are bad. One afternoon I got so irritated by his voice that I threw all his baseball cards away. I don't think I even had a Twin's Dan Gladden card, so it still doesn't hurt me to talk about it. Stupid Gladden always messing up my radio listening.

Maybe I'm a glutton for punishment but I like him. I agree he should probably do an inning or two less a night, but I don't mind him as a change of pace and he and Provus have pretty good chemistry.

I like Provus a lot and Gladden adds something when he's the color guy. But good lord, as the play by play guy I sometimes think dead air would be more illustrative of what is happening. I feel like entire chunks of what happen are totally omitted when he's on.

I remember that story from when I was a kid...wish i had listened to the game to fianlly hear his side of the story...maybe because I am twisted, but I loved that story...teams need a little of that dynamic to them...maybe not so much the drive over to the house and punch someone...but more of teammates willing to confront other players and let them know what you think.

but I might be biased...because the 87 team will always be my favorite.

It really can't be understated how bad he is doing PBP. It's like listening to Ben Stein read the Gameday description. Except he doesn't give you the "in play, out(s)".

Goin back thru the 1987 gamescores of Twins @ BOS, there was no game that they lost 8-7 on a walkoff by Todd Benzinger......made some of it all up, but good story tho

Won in BOS June 1st, lost next 2 both in walkout fashion 6-5 & 7-6(this was Mike Greenwell tieing the gm in 9th w/hr w/one out--not 2, but Lombo was PH for in 7th inning, not 4th like Gladden said, which embarrassed him.)

Funny how players are sure of details but they dont realize that people can check up on them (baseball reference). Blyleven is worst at this....Patrick Reusse checks up regularly on Berts stories & corrects em.

Yup. There have been times we hear 1-0 to Willingham and the next time we get an in-game reference is: "Morneau sits down and that's back to back strikeouts...."

the "wait.....what?" factor with him is off the charts.

Perhaps I'm spoiled. But the point of PBP is to give the fan a sense of the game. Not just what happened, but how it happened. He nonchalants so many great moments that I only learn about on the news, it's pitiful. And he developed bad habits from Gordon that I don't think he'll ever shake, like telling stories without giving the count or score.

It was a good story. But I'd rather hear the PBP. Let Provus do that and keep Gladden to the color.

Do any of the PBP guys elsewhere in the league call every play? I always assumed they switched off just to give their voices a break

Go back and listen to vintage Vin Scully if you want to learn how a PBP announcer SHOULD sound. He may not tell you everything that happens on the field but somehow, you just know what's happening anyway.

One of the few things I miss about Los Angeles is listening to Scully a few times a week.

I don't know if you were here long enough to get much exposure to Herb Carneal; but it was the same deal. True Professional at Work.

Of the four Twins broadcasters I've heard in the last couple years, I rank them 1) Probus 2) Bremer 3) Blyleven and 4) Gladden. Obviously, Gladden and Bert know the game but they resort to clichés and recycled gruel. Gladden is terrible at P-B-P, no sugarcoating it. He uses and reuses the same discriptions and misses pitches and plays. Bert also continues to use and reuse the same statements. One particular pet peeve of mine is Bert will introduce a player and say that he is in his third season with a club, when he had a cup of coffee in two consecutive Septembers. An example is saying that Pedro Hernandez is in his second season as a major leaguer, since he made one appearance with the Sox last year.

So you are saying that your recollection is perfect after 25 yrs? I wouldn't be able to provide accurate game accounts of any of my varsity sports from 15 yrs ago and there are far fewer games than a baseball player plays in a year. Especially when you combine that with a 10+ yr career.

I listend to Carneal a fair amount... I wouldn't put him on the level of Scully but he was certainly very good.

There's just something about Scully's dulcet voice and his ability to describe on-field elements so vividly that puts him in his own class of announcing.

I recall that Hrbek's nickname for Gladden was "Wrench" - from Herbie's impression that Gladden spent most of high school taking shop classes. Gladden on the radio doesn't do much to dispel Herbie's characterization. Nor does the fact that Gladden's biggest on-air spokesperson spots over the years have been for beer and Harleys.

Carneal was a gem. John Gordon grew on me and Gladden doing color with him offset his Gordo's "momma's boy" personality. I think Provus is great. So for those of us that missed Gladden telling the story, what happened between him and Lombo? Why did the fight start?

Lombo hated getting pinch hit for. It happened in Boston in the fifth inning or something. He sulked into the clubhouse and Gladden followed him, asking if he could stay in the dugout and root for the pinch hitter. When Gladden came back into the clubhouse after the game, Lombo was in street clothes, having missed the second half of the game. Gladden told him that was a bush league thing to do.

Back at home, Lombo knocked on Gladden's door. Gladden asked him in. Lombo said no. Gladden asked if he wanted him to go outside. Lombo said yes. The resulting fight ended with Gladden pinning him on his neighbor's porch. Lombo showed up in the clubhouse with a shiner. Gladden had a broken finger.

Fast forward to Game 7 of the World Series. Lombo had a great series, but was pinch hit for in like the eighth inning or something. He proceeded to go into the clubhouse and break some furniture. According to Gladden, Lombo thought he had a chance to be the series MVP, but that got taken away from him with the pinch hitting. Anyway, after the last out, Lombo came back to the dugout with a towel and was waving it around while taking a victory lap. He asked Gladden to pick him up. Gladden didn't want to, but did. He had to fight the urge to body slam Lombo at that point, considering that everyone knew what a baby Lombo had been.

That's the story. Gladden tells it better, of course.

Carneal will always be the voice of Twins baseball for me. And as a color guy, Halsey Hall was, well, he was memorable to say the least. I won't remember Gladden a year after he's gone, I'll never forget Halsey.

I do like Provus though. A lot. A whole lot. He was a fantastic hire, IMO.

Concur on Halsey, and his cigars. Also it was a good time later on when Jim Kaat was doing analysis here, before going east.
