Crawford from the Giants, Guillorme from the Mets, or Strott from the Phillies. Any of those platoons would project as a 2.5-3 WAR position. Mateo on the Orioles is intriguing as well as they likely want to move Gunnar to SS. I'm sure there are others that are an upgrade in some way to the position. Any of these guys, if available, can likely be had at a decent exchange rate as well. Guillorme would be my top target. A solid 28 year old SS that is clearly redundant on their roster except as insurance. He isn't likely to get many PAs and they could use both OF and pitching depth. A simple 1-for-1 swap of Kepler or Canterino might get it done. i just don't see the giants moving crawford. that's a loyalty organization. cain. posey. belt (until now). etc. sounds like he might play third

Mike Sixel Old-Timey Member Posted December 15, 2022 Posted December 15, 2022 Farmer, then Lewis or Lee. Why trade for Crawford if you hope he only plays half a year? Give up a prospect for that? Why?

Yeah, I keep hearing these shortstop ideas, check their stats against Kyle Farmer's and wonder why we'd want to downgrade. That was NOT a Kyle Farmer endorsement.

Now, if you want to sign a FA SS (is there one), fine (not Swanson, he's just not that great or ATL would keep him).

Mike Sixel Old-Timey Member Posted December 15, 2022 Posted December 15, 2022 I offer Polanco at short.....when Farmer isn't there. Arraez or Gordon at 2B when that happens. Again, I'm placeholding for Lewis at this point. I am warming, slightly, to Swanson at this point. But I still don't know I do it.
howeda7 Verified Member Posted December 15, 2022 Posted December 15, 2022 I know I'm alone on this, but I still think Kiriloff at 1B, Arreaz at 2B, Polanco at SS and Miranda at 3B is the best for a line-up that doesn't suck. Sure it's not great defensively, but I'm not sure there's an alignment that is. This is also why trading Urshela for no reason was idiotic.

Maybe try to trade with the Padres or Giants? Mostly I'm frustrated. This front office is going to spend the next month finding less-optimal ways to spend a bunch of money and I'm just tired of it. They'll pivot and find a guy who fills a hole that didn't necessarily *need* to be filled. They'll spend the money but it will be over far fewer years than Correa and they'll pat themselves on the back for "keeping their options open". With the Padres signing Boegarts to a big deal, they might free themselves of the elephant in the room, Tatis Jr. Injury prone, positionless in San Diego, and a PED user. They would probably eat a lot of that contract to move him.

Twinky Verified Member Posted December 15, 2022 Posted December 15, 2022 Problem is the front office whiffed on SS picks between Lewis and Lee. 2019 they went for Cavaco, an unproven high school project with zero experience against elite competition who is still in low A ball, and the Phillies with the very next pick get Bryson Stott out of UNLV who fast-tracked to the Bigs and put up adequate numbers in 127 games for a first-year guy, not to mention he can actually field the baseball. Shewmake out of Texas A&M is up in AAA for Atlanta and is solid. There were other options in 2019 that they just didn’t take.

And I don't see the Padres eating any contract given how they've behaved the past several years.

He would make a great platoon partner with Farmer though. All that said, Guillorme seems like the best fit, is likely available, and wouldn't likely cost much in an exchange. I hope there has been some chatter there.

He's held his own in those innings and his scouting report as a prospect in 2019 projected good-to-great SS defense at the big league level. His big concern was his bat. He can likely handle the position just fine.

I'm sure you can see it. And my problem is that they only land the last three situations and even then, they still traded out from under Donaldson before the contract is up. Wheeler was a long shot. No biggie there. But Darvish would have been huge on this team in 2019 and 2020, much less 21-22. But the Twins just wouldn't give that sixth year, which many people complained about and looks pretty foolish now. This front office fears long-term deals far more than they like good players. I don't agree with that strategy, especially given how their books are nearly spotless right now. You have told the story of almost every major league franchise. You can change the names as necessary, cut and paste the rest and get every fan base worked up and agreeing with you. The Twins were not the only team who took a shot at an important free agent and came up empty. The Twins are not the only team with a list of them. Sometimes disappointment feels like it is only happening to you. This still just feels like the nature of free agency to me.
Alex s Verified Member Posted December 16, 2022 Posted December 16, 2022 I like the kid we got from Cincy, I'd roll with him. This was their plan all along guys. They'd have been crazy to think Correa would sign in what we offered...especially after Turner signed. This is a rebuild being masked as a competitive rebuild because it fills more seats. 3 ifvthe starters have 1 more year. We NEED to stock our farm system rather than trying to compete in a crappy division only to get swept in round 1. Trade Gray, Kenta Maeda, and Mahle if he improves his value. Trade Kepler and Polanco. Unless those guys are signing extensions we need to get something for then. Otherwise you gave up Chase Petty, Steer and others for what?
