Wake me in 2020, let me know who won.
We don't have a bet yet, but if we do, rest assured I'll remember it. ;) Hope we're all still around to see how it turns out.

Since Meyer is "likely" to win more games than Grienke, then Meyer should be the obvious favorite, no? I have no idea what "take your bet with a honey bee" means, but how about a sig bet? Since Meyer is the favorite, in your eyes, and Grienke the favorite in mine, I'll go even up: At the end of Grienke's contract, winner gets to write the "tag" (yours is currently "I've been planning it for years") for the other for one month. Deal?

Deal. For the semanticist in you, when I said he was "likely" I didn't say "more likely". Just that it was more than a mere possibility. Still, I'll take even odds and the stakes you specify. We can wake the moderator in 2020, if the Internets still exist.

As for the tag: I'm sure you're aware that it refers to the gent in my avatar, when he said in the movie that he'd been planning to fake his own drowning for years in order to steal a kiss from the lifeguard.

Thinking and/or researching before you post also comes in handy. It helps especially if you claim to "like the idea of keeping track of these guys."
I wasn't drawing any conclusions about Lannan; I simply gave his stat line in similar fashion to the OP. You're right. What was I thinking?!

Hmm, one bad start in 3, directly attributable to the knee injury that he complained was causing him trouble throughout his appearance, he's seeing a specialist today.
Well, golly, I guess we should have signed him, then.

I really didn't know the movie until you provided the hint, thanks. Up to now I was thinking the photo was a young Molly Ringwald on a REALLY bad hair day.

Will the baseball plays get so expanaded by then that they will play into January?

You mean like a revival of Damn Yankees?

I don't know that folks were upset at all with the Harden signing. I is basically a shot at someone that just might come back. No down side at all.

There were many people who wanted Sanchez, though I must admit that I think we all thought it was unrealistic... Wouldn't hurt to keep tabs of him as well.

He's doing quite well. 2-0 with a 1.42 ERA. 21Ks to 8 BB in 19 innings.

I likewise drew a blank, but luckily, teh interwebs to the rescue:

Urban Dictionary: honey bee

I'm hoping he meant definition number 4, and not number 1. :P

OK then. It's a bet. BTW, love that movie, and love that scene. Wish I'da thought of that, and/or that I'da had the gnads to follow through if I did.

He might be the only free agent pitcher off to a hot start.

Unless you think Grienke is the last bus leaving this station for the next three years

He might have been.

If the Twins finish within, say, 5 games of a playoff spot after one or more of the regular 2013-2015 seasons, then what? What if instead of Greinke going down with injury in those years, Verlander or Prince Fielder does?

What was this then, if not a conclusion, using extremely faulty evidence about Lannan as your lead and only evidentiary source to help in making your point?:

I like the idea of keeping track of these guys. And I think a look at the list--if it tells anything--suggests that identifying good value in middle-tier free agent pitchers is a really difficult thing to do with any precision or consistency, and as the sample size becomes more useful, I think this conclusion only becomes more concrete.

The guy is the definition of a #4-5 SP innings eater (182+ IP to 204 IP every year since 2008). Signed for $2.5M.

Yes, and few of those years some to a lot of the innings were spent toiling in the minors.

Wow, this thread went to crap fast. Jokin, no one was making any conclusions about anyone. The poster was simply putting his stat line down like the others that were placed for Saunders, Blanton, Jackson etc. No one made any conclusions and I and PseudoSABR both mentioned the danger of SSS. Stop trying to be a troll on everything that gets posted.

The point that becomes more concrete (as sample size increases) is that the signing middle-tier pitchers is a relative crapshoot.

I offered Lannan as simply another pitcher that the Twins were thought to be interested in; the following paragraph (separated by two hypens, maybe that was unclear) was about the phenomenon of middle tier free agent pitchers in general.

The conclusion was faulty. Lannan had two outstanding starts, was receiving substantial praise in the local and national press for being a good signing and then he sustained a knee injury during his third start and was removed in the 2nd inning. I presented the evidence that his stat line was actually excellent through 2 starts, the poster admitted he had reached a conclusion that turned out was based on a faulty look at the stats he quoted. If there are dangers in SSS, ( I think we all agree on that!) why quote his stats?

In answer to your last question, my response to factually inaccurate conclusions or debatable points does not qualify as trolling, these are called disagreements.

Yes. And that's why, as I stated, he projects as a nice potential #4-5 starter/Innings-Eating specialist, well worth the $2.5M salary.

We have no idea what is going on inside anyone's body. I can't believe people still think pro athletes, who pretty much abuse their bodies for our entertainment, are wimps. Such a sad world we live in.

I would take Meyer AND May each winning more MLB games than Greinke over the course of Greinke's contract. Maybe Gibson too.

I rate Greinke as the most overpayed and overrated player in the majors for the next 6 years unless/until he somehow finds a way to prove me wrong.

You're on. I will take Greinke over any current minor leaguer without major league experience. And I say that while agreeing Greinke is both overpayed and overrated.

I am temporarily closing this thread until I or another moderator has time to deal with the bickering that has erupted. I am at work now and won't have time to deal with this until tonight.

I'm reopening it since I have a little bandwidth. I've talked to various people involved since the 18th, when most of this went down. I think we're all on the same page.

So if anyone else wants to track some pitchers we didn't get, I'm certainly interested. My top two "name" pitchers were Ervin Santana and Ryan Dempster. Any word on them?

The Royals are getting their money's worth so far ($13M + a top lefty relief prospect). 2-1 4 starts, 29 innings, 2.48 ERA

The Red Sox are too ($13.25M): 0-2 4 starts 24 innings, 3.38 ERA 12 K/9

Brandon Warne from 1500 provides an update:

Warne: It's early but investment in Kevin Correia looks like a good one - Minnesota Twins news | 1500 ESPN Twin Cities ? Minnesota Sports News & Opinion (Twins, Vikings, Wolves, Wild, Gophers) | Sportswire: Minnesota Twins

Interesting that three of the options (Marcum, Lannan, Myers) have already broken down and another (Baker) has been unable to answer the bell.
