Honestly I've always been an advocate of bringing in the closer in tight situations like we just had. It's not traditional, but if there's an absolutely pivotal moment in the 8th inning, I want my best arm out on that mound

Given the Twins didn't even want to use Burton in back-to-back games last year, I doubt he was available today. I don't think you can blame Gardy for Fien's inability to execute a pitch with 2 strikes.

Yeah, I'm just being dramatic. I've been very concerned about the "rest of the pen".

So what happens if we win? We'd be 3-1, which is about 3 more wins than I'm sure anybody expected at this point. And what if we keep winning? What then? Do we still make all those moves at the deadline if we're above .500 at the break (somehow)?

I'm sorry, my brother, but I'm holding you responsible for this latest turn of events.

I'm reminded of the headline of the Twins portion of an SI MLB preview from the horrible 80's: "Twins loss is 9-5 job."

Shouldn't it be "Strawp." Not "Strope?" One "o" no "e".

I think Chris Davis is trying to put a couple of zero's on his next contract.

My boss offered to make 'em *all* zeroes for me.

Fun with numbers: The last time the Twins were at .500 was April 3, 2013.

I hope nobody else posts, because this one was a good one to end on.

Oops.

Possible overreaction: So, anyone want to make Capps and offer now?

No. I would rather try out more young guys than bring Capps back.

Why didn't Perkins come in to face Davis? With the bases loaded and the best hitter in baseball (currently) up, I think you bring in your best left arm.

That makes sense to me.

A waste of a nice day by Dozier and a good game from Plouffe. Not so sure about Escobar although he got two hits. Liam spent all his live rounds getting out of the fourth I guess. Obviously, he'll get another chance, but having a 4-1 lead and basically giving it back isn't good. I think there is some truth to the CW that starters going deep into games helps the bullpen. They need a good outing from Vanimal tomorrow.

I'm not entirely against that logic, but the manager also has to play the long game. He can't treat every situation like it's the World Series; he needs also to learn who he can rely on in a long season and who he can't, and with luck also develop a young player by throwing him into the fire and (hopefully) have some success to build on. Gardy probably confirmed a suspicion, at a pretty high cost, and without anything to build on, in this instance. But to have a successful season the entire 25-man roster has to contribute, and especially in the early season you have to manage on that assumption, and let the outcome dictate what happens next. In other words, weighing the potential upside versus the very obvious downside, it doesn't seem like a boneheaded move to me.

A team destined to lose upwards of 90 games has very little to lose by playing for the wins that are there for the taking now.

But Perkins should be fresh in September when they're making that push to stay out of the cellar, so we've got that to look forward to.
