Trevor Plouffe 2013

Trevor Plouffe seems to be a controversial figure on Twin's Daily. From my viewpoint there appears to more Pro and Anti Plouffe individuals than middle of the road individuals. I could be wrong about this, but it is beside the point.

What are your predictions for Trevor Plouffe this season?

This is mine:

BA: .259

HR: 32

RBI: 96

OPS: .830

Errors (3B): 17

If he's healthy and hitting homeruns, you'll obviously see his slugging go up, but also hopefully his OBP as pitchers start trying to pitch around him a bit. My guess:

.260/.335/.470, 28 HR, 20 errors

So the consensus is that Plouffe is Mark Reynolds 2.0? I go over in BA (.270), under in power, but with a decent OPs 20 HRs, slash line .340/.455/.795. The defense will be satisfactory.

Plouffe could do anything this year from .230/.290/.430 with 20 HR's to .275/.340/.500 with 30+ HR's. I have always comped him offensively to J.J. hardy without the defense. He doesn't K (or BB) like Reynolds but he might be a guy that just has a low BAPIP like J.J. which drives the avg down similar to Reynolds. I will be thrilled if he can put up a .775+ OPS yearly.

Since the Twins brain trust is coaching him to be a more "balanced" hitter and to work on his defense. We could see his HR's go down, his errors go down and his BA go up.

It's hard to say. Bruno is a new hitting coach and the guy that was coaching Plouffe when he had his power surge. I'll keep my reservations about the past hitting coaches in the past and allow Bruno to create his own legacy of cliches. I actually expect some good things, like taking advantage of mistakes by hitting them over the fence. I'm optimistic for Plouffe this season. I think he settles in a little under an 800 OPS. The power will be there, that is almost a guarantee. You don't hit 20 HR's 3 years in a row then drop-off. Like I've said in the past, his obstacle will be working counts into his favor and not chasing sliders.

If Plouffe hits 30 HR's I'll eat my laptop.

Win win for me as I kind of need a new laptop.

I think he'll improve on defense. He struggled there last year in his first year at the position. He had like four gloves in spring training and had to rotate around the diamond in practice. He barely got any reps at third. This year, he's able to focus on the little things like positioning and footwork. So he should be better. I'll say a +3 UZR.

Offensively, he'll be streaky like last year. But with a full season of at bats, he should have better counting stats. I'm going with .260/.320/.480/.800 with 28 homers and 32 doubles.

Well said. I think he will post 20+ HR and improve moderately on his BA, hopefully around .260. If he can do that he's probably a league average 3B. Physically, I don't see any reason why he can't be at least an average 3B defensively. If he can focus, I think we have a solid 3B for at least a couple of years.
