Bandit34 Provisional Member Posted July 25, 2019 Posted July 25, 2019 No matter what happens in this inning, GREAT JOB SMELTZER!
Aggies7 Old-Timey Member Posted July 25, 2019 Posted July 25, 2019 What this series has taught me is that the twins need to avoid playing the Yankees in the playoffs. Their offense can hit right along with ours and barring some big signings, their pitching, especially late inning relief, is better. We could steal a win or possibly 2, but I can’t believe we’d be favored to take a series.Although I will say it would have been interesting to see if buxton would have made enough of a difference to help a win
David HK Verified Member Posted July 25, 2019 Posted July 25, 2019 Well, went an had the morning workout, came back to 9-7 with Smeltzer throwing seeds. OK, well, 10-7. Come on, Vikes! All we need is a field goal! *I'm sure there are already a ton of posts in this regard, but have to echo the earlier one- Smeltzer's a starter- why was Jake left in so long?
Aggies7 Old-Timey Member Posted July 25, 2019 Posted July 25, 2019 8 hits for DG and we’ve not so much as brushed him back

When did the NFL make that rule change?

Brock Beauchamp Site Manager Posted July 25, 2019 Posted July 25, 2019 Although I will say it would have been interesting to see if buxton would have made enough of a difference to help a winAlmost certainly. Kepler had to pull up on at least one ball last night that Buxton catches. Maybe more. And, well, tonight... We all know what happened tonight. There's a good chance Odorizzi doesn't exhaust himself in a single inning because Buxton catches that ball on his feet (and doesn't make an asinine throw because he doesn't have to throw at all).
Bandit34 Provisional Member Posted July 25, 2019 Posted July 25, 2019 Honest question for everyone: Has the existence of the Yankees franchise for a century been good or bad for baseball? I admit I am biased, but overall I would actually argue that the Yankees have, for the most part, been bad for baseball in the last 100 years.

A lot of true legends of the game have played for the Yankees.

Sure their fanbase is utter garbage, but the players they have had over the years? So much talent. Talented players push others to go above and beyond, which makes the whole sport more fun to watch and more competitive. I'd say they've been good for baseball (but the fanbase has been horrible for baseball).

I admit I am biased, but overall I would actually argue that the Yankees have, for the most part, been bad for baseball in the last 100 years. They were probably good for the game up through the 50s. After that, they were mostly neutral until the 90s. Then money controlled the game (as it did before FA in the 70s), but the sport had grown to the point that kind of dominance has become a hindrance, not a positive. If that makes sense. I compare it to the Celtics and the NBA. They were good for the game when the game was small and they dominated. People LOVED watching that kind of talent coalesce and it made more people watch the sport. But that kind of dominance today is not good for the sport, especially if it comes because they can just spend more than everybody else.
Bandit34 Provisional Member Posted July 25, 2019 Posted July 25, 2019 And I am a HUGE Baseball history fan! So it's not like I do not appreciate the Yankees history. I just see practically that what they have done, in my opinion, has hurt baseball.
HawksNest Verified Member Posted July 25, 2019 Posted July 25, 2019 Absolutely FANTASTIC job by Smeltzer. Well done, young man
nicksaviking Community Moderator Posted July 25, 2019 Posted July 25, 2019 Man Sano looked spry at 3rd snagging that liner!

They just would have been more split up among the league.

Aggies7 Old-Timey Member Posted July 25, 2019 Posted July 25, 2019 Of all the balls that have been hit out, I’m not sure how that wasn’t one of them
Brock Beauchamp Site Manager Posted July 25, 2019 Posted July 25, 2019 My statement in the first about going Kepler over Cave and Adrianza over Polanco feels a bit prophetic right now.

MVP Nick Punto Verified Member Posted July 25, 2019 Posted July 25, 2019 Yeah, JC was a net negative tonight which stinks because he truly hustles his *** offI'd say his performance was actually pretty gross tonight.

Brock Beauchamp Site Manager Posted July 25, 2019 Posted July 25, 2019 Yeah, JC was a net negative tonight which stinks because he truly hustles his *** offIt was more than that. Both Polanco and Kepler need a day off but Kepler can hit lefties, so can Adrianza, but Polanco really can't. Rest Kepler tomorrow.
MNT1996 Verified Member Posted July 25, 2019 Posted July 25, 2019 The thing is, those players still would have played somewhere. They just would have been more split up among the league. Having a lot of talented players on the same team makes talented players even better because they are competing against their teammates in a sense. If we didn't have the Yankees I don't think Ruth, Gehrig, etc would have been as dominant.

Well they were the driving force behind fighting to keep the reserve clause and anti trust laws and amongst the last to integrate Negro League players. But hey, I guess if they weren’t, Willie Mays would have been a damn Yankee, so that’s a plus.
Aggies7 Old-Timey Member Posted July 25, 2019 Posted July 25, 2019 SOB terrible throw could have been huge
Bandit34 Provisional Member Posted July 25, 2019 Posted July 25, 2019 Well, one positive is at least we don't play in the AL East and have to play these guys 19 times. Because that would truly be suffering every year.
Aggies7 Old-Timey Member Posted July 25, 2019 Posted July 25, 2019 or Stanton...Hard to say when he’s played in 9 games this year. Might have helped us more if he played for tauchman
