Reusse on Sano

For someone like Reusse, who has been highly critical of Sano in the past, to write this piece, it says a lot. I’m not even a fan of Reusse’s ... abrupt ... style, and I don’t think he’s changing that now to write something that the Twins want him to write. That’s why it holds a lot of sway for me.

Reusse is trying to swing the pendulum group thought for Sano... Right now it's quite negative. Hard to go more negative than where it stands right now. Common sales tactic.

Who in the media has suggested that this should be the end of the line for Sano in MN? Reusse loves to hammer on some strawmans, and spin narratives based on the rantings of a few randos on Twitter these days.

It's also worth nothing that he likely bears some responsibility for whatever pent-up frustration and ill will fans feel toward Sano given the way he's been writing about him for years

This is where I think you are putting your own narrative first. Reusse’s column doesn’t fit your own negativity, therefore Reusse is writing a piece in order to calm the negative voices. Agreeing or not with what he has to say is one thing, but attaching motives to what he writes is quite another. You don’t know that so why not take it at face value? I’ve never been a fan of Reusse, but if he had wanted to sway negative voices, then why did he write the pieces he did on Sano in the past? Why did he not come out with the same excuses everyone else did for Sano’s conditioning? He’s always been critical of him, so why the change of tune when he could just continue down that path and say, ‘See? Now this.’ as you have done. While I do understand the frustration ... it’s yet again something with Sano and the bad luck and timing is frustrating ... I don’t understand the need to denigrate the individual with suggestions that it’s something conspiratorial when it doesn’t appear to be.

He wrote the articles in the past when people were neutral or positive about Sano. Being more negative drives people forward, like a pendulum swing.

When people are negative, you can be more negative, which is hard to do in this situation, to drive folks back to a neutral state, or start the conversation neutral to get people back to the center.

You are still attaching motive behind the article. All I’m suggesting is maybe it is what it is ... unfortunate, frustrating and disappointing, sure ... but that it’s not something more conspiratorial as some posters here are suggesting; that somehow the FO and/or Sano are covering up something or not being completely honest or that there is more going on here. I don’t think Reusse is trying to sway anyone. Frankly, I don’t think he really cares that much what we think, and why I’ve not been much of a fan of his and why this column does hold sway with me this time. I think he’s just writing what he thinks, as he has in the past with Sano, regardless of what responsibility he might have in the current narrative of the fans. But then maybe I’m being too idealistic by just taking things at face value, both from Reusse and Sano and the FO.

I don't think it's the end of the line.  I truly hope that he fully recovers and has made the changes necessary to realize the potential of his talents.  However, there are several other players on this team, including ones that could potentially benefit from his absence that are more toward the front of my fandom at the moment.

I heard that conversation on a certain FM sports radio station that loves to blast the Twins as much as possible... I'm sure a combination of that, plus #TwinsTwitter...

I could not be any more frustrated with a player than I am right now with Miguel Sano. Guy gets accused of sexual assault, hits .199 the season last year, runs over a cop this off-season, and now has another setback getting injured. How about just come to the park healthy and prepared to play, without all sorts of constant drama and BS?

I agree with this take. I doubt Reusse cares about selling anything, and if he did, the last buyer he'd have in mind are you and me. I think he's calling it as he sees it, and he did the same when he made his earlier condemning observations. Reusse is openly disdainful of the TD genre of fan. He gets off on mocking us for thinking we know a lot more than we do. Despite that, I'm guessing he's accurately describing Sano's current state once again. Using Carew as his prop might be a subtle message and a subtle dig at all us know-it-alls. ;) Personally, I find his "get off my lawn" schtick more entertaining than annoying.

I agree with this, except for the ‘“get off my lawn” schtick’ being entertaining, but to each his own.

He's probably been reading TD.

I like Reusse a lot. I appreciate his independence and respect that he can admit when he’s wrong. Plus, he clearly is a baseball guy.

He spends much time in Ft. Myers and knows quite a bit of unofficial information, which I think is why he has been critical of Sanò previously. That he has at least partially defended Miguel says a lot to me.

Funny thing. I had to go back to make sure I read the same article.

Carew's comments

“He looks good; even better, Miguel told me that he found peace this winter,’’ Carew said. “I know the feeling. That happened with me.’’

was what I took away from the article.

It is optimistic.

Yes, but only our bloggers would count as "media".  The initial reaction to this here was embarrassing.  Like, STrib comment section embarrassing.

But Nick is right that Reusse and others have stoked those fires.  Plenty of blame to go around when it comes to Sano and Buxton, but I think that's what happens when you listen to a build up for a decade about two players, get glimpses of brilliance, but mostly disappointment.  At that point it's all emotional reactions and facts won't matter.

I appreciate that Reusse is trying to rise above emotions this time.  It sounds like there is no blame to be had here.  Just disappointment for the setback and hope it resolves as quickly as possible.

I've been baffled by the doom and gloom this time around. It's a cut on his heel. Cuts don't always heal quickly. He'll miss a few weeks of real baseball and then we can see how he does.
