ashbury Verified Member Posted January 16, 2019 Posted January 16, 2019 Let the legal system play out, but this phrase is especially sickening: "beginning in 2004".
Squirrel Community Moderator Posted January 16, 2019 Posted January 16, 2019 Ugh. Throwing the book at him would be kind.
3balls2strikes Verified Member Posted January 16, 2019 Posted January 16, 2019 How about if you catch your step-daughter doing drugs and throw the drugs away. In retaliation, your step-daughter makes up a story that you raped her. You end up going to jail in handcuffs and have to post bail to get out and go through a lengthy, costly trial. Then it's discovered that the step-daughter just made up the story to get back at you for tossing her drugs. That's what happened to my friend. He is a military veteran with a clean record. But everyone believed the little druggie, because women must be believed, despite many proven examples of women and kids making up accusations against men. There is a very good chance that's what happened to Wetteland. Don't be so quick to judge.

You took it much farther than that. I don't know how you can read what you typed, in the context of this charge, and feel good about it.

Feel free to post an opinion, but let's not get into extended back-and-forths. We had one of those about a year ago: http://twinsdaily.com/topic/28264-miguel-sano-accused-of-assault-by-photographer/ . Try reading it from start to finish, and see if you can think of something that didn't already get said.

tarheeltwinsfan Verified Member Posted January 16, 2019 Posted January 16, 2019 1) I do believe in free speech. 2) I am a trial lawyer and am very familiar with the presumption of innocence in U.S. courts for all accused. Having said all that, 3) I don't chose to read any more about this particular issue on TD...so I won't.

The hardest part about these threads is balancing the accusation with the possibility that it was false. That's always the case and it's complicated by the fact that this particular accusation is also one of the hardest to prove beyond a reasonable doubt. The simple fact is that people do these kinds of things and that other people also falsely accuse people of doing these kinds of things. Someone always loses, and to be truthful, not a person here knows who the real loser is/was. These are situations where I don't envy the people sitting on the jury.
PseudoSABR Verified Member Posted January 17, 2019 Posted January 17, 2019 I had seen the headlines about Wetteland but did not bother to look at the details. The details are disturbing. Years, family member, sexual abuse. Wetteland deserves due process, but nothing more than that. Our culture is shifting to the point where we will see a continual stream of these kind offenses coming forward. There is the specter of false accusation, but what we will find is that there will have been committed many sexual offenses by whom we thought to be the good guys. We should stop making excuses for such, and take a hard look at ourselves. Sometimes the friend that we believe is falsely accused is actually a person whom we should so obviously not empower.
