Does anyone know what role in the draft process Falvey and Lavine had with their previous teams? The meaning of Darin Johnson's promotion has been debated but as far as I know there haven't been any talk about any outside hires to be a keystone of the draft process. That leads me to believe that unlike Terry Ryan before, either Falvey, Lavine or both are much more hands on with the process this year.

Just wondering if we know who is doing what and who's opinion carries the most weight.

The beat writers and national writers seem to be interviewing Falvey in regards to the draft... I would assume he's the ultimate decision maker, with Lavine in the room giving his input on certain players.

For what it's worth, Thad Levine talked about this for a couple minutes on the "Inside Twins" show last Sunday.

The main takeaway is that the scouts, crosscheckers, directors, etc are responsible for identifying and ranking the talent. The role of Falvey, Levine and other front office guys will be to talk with the agents (obviously not officially because that would be against the rules) and figure out the price for specific players and to then develop a bigger picture strategy for allocating resources over the entirety of the draft.

Seems they are a little more hands on than Ryan would have been, but I think they are going to honor the work of the scouts and director (especially since they hired him for the job). Don't exactly know what it means for Deron Johnson.

For what it's worth, Cleveland's 1st round picks lately appear to be much better choices, though to be fair, Texas typically picks late. Aside from the year they picked 4th and picked Dillon Tate, most of their arms seemed to tilt heavily toward the command/control side instead of the velocity/stuff side.

So..... The twins are just slow playing us and really are going to take Greene right????

(I won't tell anyone, I can keep a secret)

Passing on Greene scares me. A super athletic kid that can do anything and the one knock is his offspeed? I have a feeling that the kid can learn offspeed when its his full time job.

Would profile as a perfect MN sports team gaffe to add to the board though.

For their part, I don't think the Twins have really tipped their hand.

Most people are predicting Wright based either on what the prognosticator would do, or based on what the prognosticator thinks the Twins will do, but I'm pretty sure the Twins have kept a pretty tight lid on their choice.

I would be of the opinion that the Twins do have the top preferences already written in ink even if they imply otherwise, now they are just trying to figure out if there is any kind of value in doing something creative.

I was high on Greene for months... At this point, it doesn't appear they could go wrong with either Greene, Wright, or Gore. Of course, only 1 of them will most likely turn out to be as advertised.

Wish I knew the right answer to this riddle. Much like you though, passing on Greene scares me.

I assume Sean Johnson is "in charge" but I think Lavine, who was in TX draft rooms for 10 drafts (I believe) is going to have a lot of say as well.

I was a little surprised to read this from Klaw:

"It’s not a huge high school pitching crop, but since there aren’t many up-the-middle prospects in the collegiate or high school ranks, the few good prep arms available should fly off the board before we get far into Round 2. And there just aren’t as many good college starting pitchers, even if we’re generous about whom we call a starter (that is, plenty of these guys look like future relievers), which removes an avenue of safety for a lot of teams who like to default to that group, often as a means of portfolio balancing: "Hey, we took a risky high school kid with our first pick, let’s balance him out with a nice safe college starter.""

I thought this draft seemed deeper than last years but maybe that's because we have 3 picks early. I'm really excited about drafting Wrigth but 35/37 is nearly as fun (for me, anyway).

Wonder if it would be smart to grab a guy like Joe Perez in the mid rounds.  He just hit mlb pipeline's top 100 draft prospects.  He will be out next season with TJ, but he's a HS guys that hits high 90s.  Strikes me as the kind of move some team could make with a mid round pick and an extra 500k or so.

It's coming fast and I'm super pumped! I'm just hoping for one of Wright, Gore, Lewis, or Greene and I'll be happy, nervous for who we may have passed on, but happy none the less! Bring it on

I'm down for it if he would sign. Another mid round guy that's exciting is Jake Adams from Iowa, he had a monster year and has crazy power but is not considered a top 200 prospect, could be a steal

Way low rating on Seth Romero because of his personal stuff.  That's a guy the Twins should take a flyer on

I wouldn't mind taking a flier on Romero either if the price is right but I would also be very cautious, even when he did play this year he really wasn't all that effective and it's not just one instance, he has a long string of off the field issues

Not that long.  He smoked marijuana.  Several Twins players have tested positive for that, some multiple times.  Do they have a "long string of off field issues?".  Oh, he miss curfew once too ;)

Yeah, BA has him as 297 on their list but I don't have access to their scouting report

He is listed at 6-2, 250, and has only one tool...

Not just smoked weed, did it behind the bleachers before a game in uniform and took a picture doing it, also got in fights with team mates more than once, skipped practice more than once, and was repramanded more than once for poor conditioning and lack of commitment. That's all the stuff we know about and to me speaks a lot louder than someone just smoking pot

He hit .350this year though and led the NCAA in HRs. He's a 1B with tremendous power and ability to hit, sure maybe he is a full time DH but he still seems like a good pick up in the middle rounds to me, I'm not condoning taking him early or anything

Romero is a wildcard. I'd take him at 35 no question but I don't think you can put his past behavior as "boys will be boys" sort of nonsense. This is a young man who knows his arm is worth millions of dollars and still screwed up multiple times. It's not going to get better by ignoring it. You set him up in a good environment and you spend the resources needed to deal with whatever issues are affecting him. If you don't want to do that, draft someone else.

I was thinking about this today. I've seen a bunch of scouting reports that say Wright has a higher floor but isn't that kind of a weird thing to say? Isn't the floor with all of these kids to not ever make it to the majors? I went back and looked at some scouting reports and Matusz and Appel both said they were a #3 starter at worst. It seems like the high floor label is kind of irrelevant

You're minimizing his offenses for whatever reason you have, and you know it. But I agree that he might be a good bet at 35/37. I'll bet the Twins have discussed him extensively, and are regarding his off-feild issues from a clear lens.
