His best MLB appearance - a gem!   Definition of a very, very good start.  I saw him kind of lose it for a brief moment when he walked a few guys and threw that wild pitch (same inning).  Glad he could stop the bleeding there and re-focus.  VERY HAPPY!

There never was and he still got skipped.  This is probably leftover angst from the prior FO speaking, but I'm not ready to be that confident.  Afterall, until about 48 hours ago it wasn't even clear they'd make the correct decision.

 

Glad to see it though and I hope you're right that Berrios is in the rotation to stay.

Yeah, not really sure anyone said that around here exactly. Likely more along the lines of, their not going to swing at the  bad ones if you're not throwing many good ones to begin with.

The way the Twins are playing right now, I think it's a straight-up fight between Mejia and Gibson. Let it come down to performance and make the decision when you need to make that decision.

Berrios is 22 and will have some bad outings, the big thing with his little bit of extra maturity is that hopefully he doesn't let that occasional bad start affect his confidence.  I think last year when things went bad he lost confidence and it got worse.  He will need to be consistent as we see with Santiago's start today.

Berrios has had his share of bad outings already. This start should help him tremendously -- he has now proven to himself that he can do this.

Sure there will be ups and downs but we should all be encouraged by what we saw and be worrying a lot less about "bad outings" (even Cy Young had his share of them) or thinking silly things like how he only has a 5% chance of being above average.

Hughes may still fall off a cliff. Offense has helped him.

 

As for Gibson v Mejia, I don't know why a team would mess with Gibson unless Mejia fails in a larger sample size or gets injured, especially if the stories are true that Gibson was ignoring coaches. Go with youth, use Gibson for emergency depth.

Great for Berrios, and his confidence, but also great for the confidence of the whole clubhouse.

Seeing a potentially high-end starter like Berrios come in and shut down one of the best lineups in the game today has be a game changer for some of these guys. It can go from "Wow, this is a cute little run, and sure is fun while it's lasts," to "We can sustain this thing and go take one of these playoff spots."

They'd never admit it. But, If I'm thinking that from the outside looking in, some of those guys have to be thinking it.

I'm not thinking it.  The Twins pitching has been far too susceptible to the long ball. It's great to see them competing against the likes of the Indians and White Sox.  I want to see if they can win either the Baltimore or Houston series during the last two weeks of May before I start thinking playoffs are a possibility.
