old nurse Verified Member Posted April 30, 2017 Posted April 30, 2017 Wish we had room for Drew Storen.....Yup, would have cost a million more than Belisle. Less than 2.5 more than Tonkin
drjim Provisional Member Posted April 30, 2017 Posted April 30, 2017 Wish we had room for Drew Storen.....He'd be nice, but he wasn't that good last year and good reason to believe he won't make it through the year healthy. I wanted a better reliever than Belisle, but I'm not surprised they passed on Storen.

Storen represented upside, something this bullpen is nearly devoid of.

drjim Provisional Member Posted May 1, 2017 Posted May 1, 2017 The perfect is the enemy of the good. This strikes me as a hindsight complaint (not you, the original post on Storen). Look at all the relievers who were signed last year, pick one who is doing well, and saying the Twins should have signed him. Well, no bleep. If teams knew he would bounce back like this he would have gotten 2-3 years at more money per year. I'm not an mlb evaluator but I thought he was heading the wrong way and was an injury risk. There were other pitchers I was hoping the Twins would go after. We'll see, it's still early.

Sure, some of them failed, but I don't think the Twins get off the hook by saying that. Some of them didn't fail, and it's the job of the Twins front office to find those guys and acquire them when they could help the pen/team. I actually wouldn't hold it against the Twins if they dropped $3 mil on Storen, or $7 mil or whatever on Holland, and it didn't work out.

I certainly would not fault the current front office if a free agent reliever signing failed, in fact I wanted much more aggression. Just that Storen was way down on my list, and he didn't even strike me as much of an upside play (though admittedly better than Belisle, who I wanted no part of). Holland was #1.

My username and "Storen". 10 posts that completely refute this BS. Don't level something like that without taking a few seconds to see if it's true. Storen was my first choice all off-season and if he was flaming out, I'd still stand by that he was my pick.

Holland was #1.Then it seems like nitpicking to me, to dismiss the example of Storen as a hindsight complaint. We all knew the Twins has this need. Whether Storen was at the top of your list or not, he was among a group that the Twins should have been pursuing and obviously failed to land anyone from it. If they ranked Holland #1 like you, but waited on him and had to settle for Belisle, that would be a failure too.
TheLeviathan Old-Timey Member Posted May 1, 2017 Posted May 1, 2017 Fair enough. I don't remember any call for Storen but I'll trust your word. Direct quotes: Storen 1 year and 3M makes me sad. We should've doubled that. On Tyson Ross: 2 years 20M - I'm on board. And sign Storen too while we're at it. There are 8 more times I said it this offseason. 8.
drjim Provisional Member Posted May 1, 2017 Posted May 1, 2017 Storen 1 year and 3M makes me sad. We should have doubled that.Owned EDIT: You beat me to it, I pulled this from another forum.

TheLeviathan Old-Timey Member Posted May 1, 2017 Posted May 1, 2017 They absolutely failed in bullpen additions this offseason. Agreed. I'd have loved Holland too. We had money and openings and bullpen always has demand midseason. Missed opportunity.
drjim Provisional Member Posted May 1, 2017 Posted May 1, 2017 Since I can't edit my post to fully fete TheLeviathan, let me repeat that he is a genius and his Twins and baseball knowledge should never be questioned.

Missed opportunity. It might cost them a chance to be a sneaky contender too, much lesd flip for assets. Even with a couple good innings, I still don't understand Belisle. So much meh.

So much meh. Right, there is really no downside. If they flop, we have some kids that were going to need time, but also need to pitch this year. If they succeed and you're good - it's one less thing you need. If they succeed and you stink, you have attractive deadline bait. It's easily my biggest complaint about this FO so far. I had Storen-Holland-Feliz as targets and I would've tried to sign two of them.
Mike Sixel Old-Timey Member Posted May 1, 2017 Posted May 1, 2017 They absolutely failed in bullpen additions this offseason. They didn't even try, imo. Signing high upside guys coming off bad years, so you don't pay as much and if they hit you can deal them (or keep them)? That's how rebuilding teams work. Signing 37 yo RPs? Uh.
stringer bell Verified Member Posted May 1, 2017 Posted May 1, 2017 This may not be the last we hear about this. If Chargois' agent has half a brain he's going to file a grievance to get Chargois his MLB service time and pay for his DL stint. He was optioned in March because he pitched poorly. Gee, wonder if his injury might have had something to do with that. Chargois' agent could argue he should have been medically evaluated before being optioned.Isn't on the player to report an injury? If Shaggy didn't report any problems, then it would be on him. Managers and pitching coaches are not mind readers. A misdiagnosed injury OTOH, would be grounds for him to grieve for his service time. It was certainly justifiable to send him down based on performance in the spring.

He wanted to make the MLB roster, hid an arm injury during ST in hopes of making the roster, and pitched poorly. Hopefully the arm injury is relatively minor and he can bounce back quickly.
