Mike Berardino wrote that the Twins have been linked to Dominican shortstop Jelfrey Marte. According to Baseball America, he could receive around $3 million. He's generally believed to be the #2 prospect eligible to sign on July 2nd. Obviously there is a long time before then, but this would be yet another nice signing.

The article also talks about the new academy in the Dominican Republic. He talked to Ervin Santana about the facility and what it might mean.

Berardino also writes that the Twins have hired Tae Uk You, a 25-year-old senior at the University of Minnesota to be their translator for Byungho Park.

Here is something I didn't know:

In Korean years, You is considered to be 26. Infants are considered to be 1 at birth, which means a baby born on Dec. 31 would be considered 2 years old while actually being 2 days old.

Park, born July 10, 1986, is considered to be 31 back home.

There's also a reminder of how to pronounce Buddy Boshers' last name.

Here is a video of Marte taking grounders at SS. As you can see from the video using the eye test (especially the quick bare-hand snag and throw at 0:15-16), and from the comment below the video, he apparently has great defensive tools. Very smooth with the glove and throws.

He looks generally very athletic for 16 yo. He's quite skinny, but to be expected at that age, especially for true SS.

Some things to work on, at least to my untrained eye, such as an unnecessary step or two - but he's 16, plenty of time.

Untrained eyes might not pick up small but important nuances.   The extra steps are like an elephant in the room but I assume that will be coached out of him pretty quickly.   The video really didn't show a whole lot except his build and a glimpse of his athleticism.

Like that the Twins are looking long term at shortstops.  And, of course, now that the Twins are interested the stinkin' new Collective Bargaining Agreement has locked up spending on the amateur international market.

The man is keeping the Twins down.  Again.  DAMN THE MAN!!

That little extra hop isn't something that can be easily coached out.

That's a quick fix.  The reason for it is that someone taught him to punch his glove with his free fist right before he catches the ball.  Eliminate the punch and the extra steps/hop is gone.  Check it out to see what I mean.  Was better when he barehanded the ball.

Getting the right amount of hops can be a well appreciated skill.

Dang, he's got a HUUUGE hitch in his fielding motion. Gotta pound that out with a hammer.

Honestly, coming from someone who doesn't know. How bad is a hitch in a players motion? For quarterbacks, it's almost impossible to coach out. How is it for baseball players?
