I think this idea is worth exploring. I think a goal for his workload would be in the neighborhood of 100 pitches plus warmups.

32-35 times a season at most, though. No more than that.

Well, maybe an additional 4-5 starts on top of that when they play in November!

Oh, in the post-season you just pencil him in for consecutive complete game wins for series sweeps.

I think I covered the bases loaded part. The walks were pinched (standard rookie hazing by umpire) and the wild pitch was catchable.... yes, he was struggling, but there was more to the story than the traditional stat line was the point.

I'm sorry he wasn't getting pinched, or hazed by the umpire.

He was missing and it wasn't even close.

In the bullpen he's gone 'max effort' to increase his fastball from 93 to occasionally 97.  I could see that being a cause.

On MLB, he said the max effort for high velocity plus the adrenaline rush he gets pitching in late innings caused his lower back problem. He thought he solved the problem with mechanical adjustments but felt he came back to soon from the last DL stint causing the back to flare up. Now he wants to make sure it's 100% before pitching again.

I've never really heard of a move to the pen causing an injury.  Starting is almost universally more strenuous.  If May can't hold up in the pen, I can't see him staying healthy in the rotation either, but it's certainly worth a shot.

Chronic health issues are a huge, flashing, red light--see Fielder, Prince. The 1st criteria for a SP (or any one else) is the ability to reliably take the field and perform. I wouldn't pencil his name in the rotation (maybe not even the Active Roster) until May demonstrates reliability. The Twins have plenty of candidates worthy of competing for a spot in the rotation. There is absolutely no need to pencil in a role for May.

Pitchers get hurt. Kershaw, Syndergaard, Harvey, Wacha, de Grom, Wainwright, Verlander and so forth. It can't be projected who or when. In selecting starters, first chance goes to talent, not the guy who you're comfortable can take the ball every five days, or you end up with a rotation of Correia, Pelfrey, Nolasco, Santiago, Milone, etc. May has more talent than most starters for the Twins the last few years and the projectable choices for next year. He should get an honest chance to make the rotation.

To place May's name in that group of proven stars is unbelievable. May is at best a journeyman with as many failures as successes--he has earned no status like those pitchers.

He wasn't comparing May's talent to those guys, he was saying pitchers get hurt and he gave some names. It's obvious that's what he's doing.

He is right about May showing that during his time as a starter he was better than most of the dregs we have rolled out there in the past few years.

A back is a back.  I believe May when he says that it wasn't an issue when he was a starter.  Enough time between appearances "resolved" the lower-back issue.  I also believe that if he is brought back as a starter, in the course of a full season as a starter, he'll have the same lower-back issue. Exercise of the core-area muscle could can help that.   However, I've known a few people with lower-back issues.  It just doesn't go away.

It's more of an issue for taller people with longer torsos.  He is 6'-5".

As someone whose had back problems since highschool after injuring my back on the job landscaping it has been a problem intermittently since.  There's no doubt it can be helped by certain exercises but once you injure your back once you have a good chance of having issues down the road, especially if you have bad posture.

Yeah, there are exercises that can help.  But in very physical jobs like landscaping and MLB pitcher, those back issue, as you know well, will come back.
