Mike Sixel Old-Timey Member Posted May 5, 2019 Posted May 5, 2019 I'm late to the party, but I'm jumping in on Disney tomorrow morning prior to Wednesday's earnings report. 2019 is going to be all Disney. Their movie lineup might have 4, 1 billion dollar makers. With that said, I really like Sonos products. I think their Ikea collaboration is going to be a big hit for the company. I'm going to make a smaller trade on them too. Outside of a quick hit with Nintendo a couple years ago, my portfolio is invested in biotech/pharma - UNH being my strongest holding. I'm going to try to diversify a bit here now.UNH has been good you, I assume. joethastud 1
joethastud Provisional Member Posted May 5, 2019 Posted May 5, 2019 UNH has been good you, I assume. I've been basically been putting 5% of my net income into UNH stock since 2011. Then my retirement accounts are solely invested into PRHSX. The long way of saying yes. Very good.

I own some Indian stocks that have been destroyed with Brexit and the trade wars - like thousands in the red. Could sell and get a tax write off at this point. Deere is down 5% today. Great company, I think, in the longterm but it might get cheaper for a bit.

Great company, I think, in the longterm but it might get cheaper for a bit. My brother works as a John Deere salesman and store manager. He's been trying to explain to his pro-Trump wife that the policies going on in DC are causing them to have less money in the household due to farmers having less money because of less markets to sell to and the cost of equipment going up so much as Deere has used up their steel backups in house and now have to buy at a much higher rate, raising the already incredibly high cost of new equipment.

AlwaysinModeration Verified Member Posted June 18, 2019 Posted June 18, 2019 (edited) I just made my way through this entire thread. Some remarkable advice found in these parts that I wish I had perused earlier. Interested to know what takes are on some of the touted stocks on here like Nvidia, Shopify, Tesla, Disney, New Relic, Okta (and Uber, Lyft and Chewy as well) at current prices. I’m suspicious that the market as a whole is going to take a serious downturn. Winter is coming (and rates are low, so there isn’t much flexibility to mitigate a slowdown). Mike Sixel Old-Timey Member Posted June 18, 2019 Posted June 18, 2019 For years people said Amazon and apple and Google were too expensive.... My thought is that if you don't need the cash, investing in good companies with good leadership is a good idea. I still love Shopify and Okta. I am still a mild believer in New Relic, but they aren't getting traction. Nvidia is no longer my favorite, but they are priced cheaper, so maybe? I can't comment on the rest, as I haven't looked at them. This is, of course, not advice, just observations.....
joethastud Provisional Member Posted June 19, 2019 Posted June 19, 2019 I've done really well this year. I have a okay grasp on the market, but in the end, I'm really just guessing like most. Disney is my favorite stock I own. It's expensive, but I think its the most sure thing. The parks, the future streaming platform, and the enormous movies this year that are coming out. I made an enormous mistake with Chewy. I had never participated in trying to get in on an IPO or purchasing shortly after the stock hits the secondary market. Their IPO price I believe was 23. I set an alert to buy as soon as it hit 23.01 so I could purchase ASAP. It opened at $36.60ish. I bought the same amount of shares I was planning on purchasing at 23, at 36. But to add to that, my X amount of shares got purchased in 3 different transactions. One at 36, one at 38, and the largest at 39.80. This was great for a couple minutes, but I've been sweating bullets for about 5 days now. Today it rallied big time. I think its a great long play - the growth is outstanding, but also, they're also losing ridiculous amounts of money. Maybe the extra cash on hand will help with margins somehow??? I should have bought more SONO when I did too.
gunnarthor Old-Timey Member Posted June 19, 2019 Author Posted June 19, 2019 I tend to agree more with Mike on the topics in this thread. Don't overly worry about market up and downs and hold for the longterm, don't daytrade. I personally love large dividend stocks although it does impact your taxes at the end of the year. But if you can afford it, dividend reinvestment can really build up a stock in your portfolio. We've added over 300 shares of WFC over the years just through reinvestment. That adds up. Trust companies that are well run/strong moats or in industries that are required/needed. Put some money in index funds. Make sure you max out your companies 401k and have an IRA that you contribute to to the max before you put money elsewhere. We've had some luck on some smaller companies - Shopify, Roku, Helmrich Payne. But we've never gone all-in on those type of buys. Probably not a good idea but man, I wish I had bought more Shopify. gunnarthor Old-Timey Member Posted August 14, 2019 Author Posted August 14, 2019 Ouchie.Yep, I mean, I'm not planning on selling any of our holdings and we'll ride this out since we won't need the money for 20 years. But, ouch. We hold in several big areas - big banks and oil/gas - which are getting crushed lately. Hoarding cash for now and hopefully we can buy into the market later at a nice sale price.

After reading her explanation I can understand now why one is coming. Too many uncertainties with the upcoming election, tariff/trade wars with China, etc. But with every recession comes good buy low opportunities!

gunnarthor Old-Timey Member Posted October 3, 2019 Author Posted October 3, 2019 Market is down a lot this week. Lot of different factors but a lot of smart people seem to think that we are due for a recession. This could be the start of it, I suppose.
