Trade Kyle Gibson

I don't like the idea of trading Gibson.  Say they trade him for a high-end bullpen arm and some minor league arms and a backup level catcher.

 

Now in two years they might need another starter and have go spend $15M a year on one. 

 

All could be avoided if they just go and spend $4-6M on a good reliever on the FA market without dealing away a mid rotation starter.

I thought he had 3 years of controlled but he has 4 years of control.  Count me on board with it would take a deal one heck of a deal.  The Miller deal might still be a stretch because I don't see another FO going nuts like AZ did for a SP that is not a true front of the rotation guy.

 

Would anyone not trade him for the package Atlanta got for Miller?  If Swanson were a little closer that would have been a great deal for us.  Inciarte would have been a good fit right out of the gate.  Hopefully, Buxton and Kepler reach their potential and we would have had an abundance e of outfielders in that scenario but sign me up for that problem.  Blair is MLB.com #61.  He probably profiles to be a touch better than Gibson.

 

That's the type of trade that could really help a team sustain a long successful run.

I would deal him for that type of deal, but not that exact same deal.  Swanson is too far away and we have a few decent shortstop options now.  If we were talking catcher prospects + others I'd listen.  That being said I want to see Gibson continue to develop.  He has improved every year he has been up.  Let's see that development continue and then sustain for minimal $$$$.

When Gibson was getting ahead and breaking off sliders and change-ups last year he was unbelievably good.  IMO, better than anyone else in the rotation at their best.  He seems to get into prolonged funks of falling behind and getting shelled though.  I think maturity will help.  I don't think his improvement in K/9 was a fluke, and I actually expect him to improve again this year.  When he came up he was a thrower, he nibbled, and still sometimes nibbles.  Now he's learning to pitch.  No one should be untouchable, but I can't imagine anyone offering enough to get him.  I certainly wouldn't take relief help with Reed, Burdi, Meyer, Jay, et al waiting in the wings. If none of them have stepped forward by the all star break and the pen still needs help, I'd consider more drastic options.  Preseason, I'm rolling with Gibby as my 2 behind Santana.

Nobody is trading Gibson for a couple relievers but what if it was a Shelby Miller type return.  Gibson is not worth quite as much as Miller but what if the return was slightly less than what the Braves got for Miller?

 

I don't know how you pass that up.  Everyone wants a big trade.  Well, you cant do that trading Brian Duensing.

 

The number 1 pick in the draft, who will likely be an above average to very good SS within 18 months?   Hmmmmm.....yes, I'd do that. Like, if the Dodgers offered their Seager, yes.

Bingo, Atlanta would have been foolish not to take that deal, and the Twins as well, but that's point. You'd be foolish not to take it because it's a crazy over pay and that doesn't happen very often. GMs that too often over pay in trades don't usually stay GM for very long.
