Whaddya think-- Gardy to the Nats?

The manager was apparently permitted to choose his own coaches for this position. And as jokin suggested above, this might have swung the difference. Who knows?

For as long and mostly successful as it is, Gardy's career has been one of the more insulated of the major managerial candidates.  Same organization for 27 seasons, 11 as first base coach under just one manager and pitching coach the whole time, and then 13 as manager with just one pitching coach, mostly same coaching staff that hasn't worked much elsewhere... I would worry that Ron's probably not helping bring in the best coaching talent with his network.

Looks like Gardenhire doesn't really have the respect around the league that some liked to toot. Maybe he should settle for third base coach.

Maybe Gardy avoided a bad situation with the Nationals... They now went with their 2nd choice Dusty Baker after presenting an embarrassing low-ball offer to Bud Black of 1 year, $1.6 million.

Yeah, what is up with the big-pocket Nationals low-balling the managerial candidates?  They screwed around with Davy Johnson too.

It looks like they either don't believe a manager has much influence over the players (in which case, why do they keep firing them?) or they have no problem cutting corners to save a buck.  If this happened with the Twins, there would be rioters here.  And I'd be one of them.

Considering the lack of discipline clubs have handing out player contracts these days, I always thought the managers were underpaid and big deals like the Cubs gave Joe Madden would become the new norm.  Looks like the Nationals are trying to set a new precedent by giving a small deal to an established, but desperate for a job veteran manager.

Of course we don't know what the incentive bonuses are, so I might be making a mountain out of a pitching mound.

Count me as surprised that Gardy didn't get a job.

I do think he is probably the best positioned to get a job for a team with certain expectations that are underachieving and want to gas the manager midseason for a spark and/or stability. Could see Toronto, Detroit, White Sox, Reds as possibilities. If it doesn't happen this year might not ever happen.

Or maybe no team wants him.

Despite all we heard about Gardy being a wonderful manager and how he got the most out of the least, nobody with an opening wanted to hire him.

I think all the national praise may have been patronizing.

When he left, I thought he'd have a hard time getting a job.  He sill likely will though.  It will likely be with a veteran team, and fair or not, likely a team that's not very strong into analytics.

I'm not surprised Gardy didn't get the Nationals job as he and Dusty Baker seem very similar, though Baker has a stronger track record and has spent his entire career in the NL.

brings up even more questions... Might he have input on wanting to bring some of his "Gardy guys" with him?  Would any GM approve of Andy back in the pitching coach chair?

Right on cue.

Today, per Lavalle

Those close to Gardenhire believed he was a front runner to take over the Padres, so many were surprised when San Diego hired Andy Green last week. Rick Anderson, Gardenhire's long-time pitching coach, was going to join him if he had landed the gig. And there was a chance he would have reached out to his former coaches, like Scott Ullger, to be part of his staff.

My assumption all along was that Gardy was willing to reinvent himself at least a little bit. I hope he does. Who knows what role the old coaches played in this. However, I do think Gardy will need to weigh his loyalty demands against his desire to manage again if he moves forward.

Sounds like Gardenhire was offered the Padres' bench coach job; nothing official yet.

....which is a much better place for him.

Some of us think that managing the Tigers, White Sox, Royals or Indians would be a better place for him ;)

That was my thought too, a more veteran team that was not really strong into analytics.

It didn't break super well for Gardy over the past year, no veteran team that was close to contending fired their manager in season (and would have looked to someone like him for a spark) and I have a suspicion he would have been the frontrunner for the Mets if they didn't have their great run. Still a little surprised he didn't get a job.

I am perfectly happy having Ausmus managing the Tigers and Ventura managing the Sox. For us Twins fans, those two are doing just fine, don't you agree?  :)

Ausmus did not do that fine in 2014...

Didn't break well in 2015, just like it didn't break well in 2014. I'm not at all surprised about him missing out on San Diego. Gardy will be the perennial back-up pick if the club fails to land their top alternative options- and maybe a leading candidate as an interim manager in certain situations.

Kind-of the opposite result from all of those here who were pretty adamant in declaring that Gardy would have his pick of jobs if the Twins were foolish enough to fire him.

Not to worry Gardy fans, if the Twins stumble I predict Ryan will do his utter best to replace Molitor with Gardy.

And didn't break well in 13 or 12 or 11 either.

Don't confuse this with support of Gardy, I thought he should have been gone after 2012. Just thought another team would hire him. Probably still will.
