Ouch. It's kinda come to that, hasn't it? Still would like him to throw a dominant inning or two before the playoffs.

I just think he shouldn't pitch today in Detroit. But who knows? Maybe if we have a blowout in Cleveland. We have other pen arms that need to be worked, too.

If there's a rundown, and a fielder throws the ball multiple times during the course of it, does he get more than one assist in the same play?

Ask spinowner. He knows this kind of quirky trivia. I should know ... I've been hearing it from him my whole life. And the better for it ... even if sometimes it got annoying. ;)

No, but a tree falls in the forest.

"Playoffs???? You're talkin' playoffs??"

There's only so many times in life when I can tee it up like that for you guys, and you whiff.

Where is Chief to make this official?

Meh ...

Winnah!

If he's not here, you just gotta fill it in for him.

And one of 8 chicken dinnahs left to eat ... good thing I like chicken.

He only gets one assist, but since multiple throws means that it was a bad rundown, he may get an assist and his release on the same play.

Thanks for bein' his proxy.

Well, Chief didn't give me his proxy. I just took it. I'm about action not passivity. :)

I think for those that missed it because they chose football over baseball should be blocked from ever seeing it. ;)

Meh, the proliferation o' media i'm sure factored into their decision. I myself crossed the line occasionally during the game.

On the other side, i'm already regrettin' falling asleep briefly and missing the final out, as i see Kepler caught it.

And unless it was a spectacle (in which case, it'd probably have woken me up), i doubt it will make any high lights...

I shall await patiently for him to catch up on the game thread.

Else, i can always dive into the rules online somewhere, and sort it out for myself.

He will enjoy the opportunity to answer and explain, I'm sure!

Official MLB Rule 9.10(a)(1) covers this adequately, don't you think?

OK, OK, we don't all have the rules memorized word-for-word. Me included. :) Here is the wording. (I had a little trouble with the PDF, so I just typed it by hand, hopefully without too many tpyoes.)

The official scorer shall credit an assist to each fielder who throws or deflects a batted or thrown ball in such a way that a putout results, or would have resulted except for a subsequent error by any fielder. Only one assist and no more shall be credited to each fielder who throws or deflects the ball in a run-down play that results in a putout, or would have resulted in a putout, except for a subsequent error; ...

So, I would have guessed wrong. I'd have said that only one assist would be credited no matter how long the run-down. Aside from putouts and assists, the official scorecard will show the exact sequence of throws, e.g. 9-3-4-1-3-1-4-2, or whatever.

There's more, so have a look if you want more of this good stuff.

Yes...

I don't think.

Wait! No. I mean... Let me start again...

Yes, it covers it adequately.

But it also offers the loophole i was looking for...

Something was said by an announcer about someone tying the record with 3 assists in an inning.

(I think it followed a grounder to third, so it must have been a third baseman they were talking about)

The rule (or as much of it as i read) seems to imply an assist is awarded even if a subsequent error causes the runner not to be put out.

So it is possible for someone to have 4 assists in an inning. And no, it isn't really worth putting more effort into finding if it has happened (beyond a quick google search...)

Cool side note: in a rundown, you can get an assist on your own putout!

So, it would be possible though absurd for everyone but the DH to get an assist on the same play?

If only the the Harlem Globe Trotters played baseball...
