Mr. Brooks Verified Member Posted November 4, 2018 Posted November 4, 2018 Nope, not progress. They are taking heat and rightfully so, that was a terrible effort. They didn't look any different than they have since Fleck got here. Yet, three weeks ago I was told I had to wait 3 or 4 more years to criticize any results. I don't understand what is different now.

Badsmerf Verified Member Posted November 4, 2018 Posted November 4, 2018 The DC hire never made sense from the beginning. Fleck needs to be more careful with hires in the future.

Is a bad loss in a poorly played game "progress"? Of course not. And there is room to criticize. Your particular brand of criticism is still several years too soon. And there is room to criticize. Your particular brand of criticism is still several years too soon. This looks like pretty much every loss so far under Fleck. What exactly is my brand of criticism, and what am I allowed to criticize, and what am I not allowed to criticize? I'd honestly like to know. Because all I'm asking for is some kind of measurable progress, and to be at least competitive against the poor to mediocre Big10 teams. I don't feel like I'm asking for anything unreasonable.

Mr. Brooks Verified Member Posted November 4, 2018 Posted November 4, 2018 I don't believe your characterization of your criticisms is at all accurate. So I think that's where the conversation ends.Well you can hit and run me if that's what you choose to do.But I'd simply ask that you point to where I've asked for anything more than that. Perhaps I've unfairly asked for something unreasonable from them, but I don't believe that I have. I may not have given them due credit for a nice win against Fresno State, but then again, I believe I've been pretty consistent in saying that I really only care about conference results. The talent gap between power 5 teams and the rest are simply to wide to be used as any kind of measurement, IMO.
Badsmerf Verified Member Posted November 4, 2018 Posted November 4, 2018 I think we all gave them credit for that win. Despite the record, Fresno State hasn't really beaten anyone good. The problem is how inept this team has looked the past 2 years. Talent, or age doesn't fix that.
Badsmerf Verified Member Posted November 5, 2018 Posted November 5, 2018 He gone. Smith fired by Fleck, d line coach will assume the position for the rest of the year. Previous Rutgers coordinator. Ok, Arkansas coordinator, Rutgers coordinator... Fleck, hire some coaches that come from success. Even if they aren't FBS coaches, get guys that are going to be elite. Don't just talk about it.
Vanimal46 Old-Timey Member Posted November 5, 2018 Posted November 5, 2018 Good. Needed to happen. Fleck needs to hire an established former HC to run the defense.
Badsmerf Verified Member Posted November 6, 2018 Posted November 6, 2018 Good. Needed to happen. Fleck needs to hire an established former HC to run the defense.I'm not worried about an established HC. I just want someone that comes from an atmosphere of winning. Don't mess with coaches from bad programs that haven't made an impact. Look at the Alabama staff, Clemson staff, Ohio State, Georgia etc.
biggentleben Verified Member Posted November 7, 2018 Posted November 7, 2018 I know I keep harping on Mason, but that's one thing he did. He kept on a couple coaches from Wacker who he knew were very highly regarded. He had already found a gem in Kansas in David Gibb and made him the D-Coordinator by bringing Gibb with him to Minnesota. It's okay to have guys smarter than you on your coaching staff. In fact, that should be a sign you have a competent staff. If you could drill each position group and coordinate all three facets better than anyone under you as a head coach, you're bound for bad things. Mike Sixel 1

Badsmerf Verified Member Posted November 7, 2018 Posted November 7, 2018 We've agreed in many ways about the importance of having competent coaches. I wish he could have kept Claeys as DC, because I really feel his schemes and adjustments were very good.

Badsmerf Verified Member Posted November 10, 2018 Posted November 10, 2018 A nice bounce back game so far. This Purdue team isn't bad. Defense holding a dangerous offense to zilch, but got crushed last week by a Chevy Malibu.
TheLeviathan Old-Timey Member Posted November 10, 2018 Posted November 10, 2018 This is not the score I expected to see when I got home. Vanimal46 and USAFChief 2
Vanimal46 Old-Timey Member Posted November 13, 2018 Posted November 13, 2018 (edited) Maybe firing the DC lit a fire under the players... Only gave up 88 rushing yards all game! I'm pretty sure Illinois had more rushing yards in their first 4 attempts last week. Edited November 13, 2018 by Vanimal46 snepp 1
Vanimal46 Old-Timey Member Posted November 24, 2018 Posted November 24, 2018 I'm watching Michigan vs. Ohio State today and boy is this a pleasure to watch compared to our Gophers.
Badsmerf Verified Member Posted November 24, 2018 Posted November 24, 2018 Terrible call on Cashman. These announcers are going to drive me crazy.
Badsmerf Verified Member Posted November 24, 2018 Posted November 24, 2018 Nice year Cashman. I hope he gets a shot at the next level. Dude is a stud.
Badsmerf Verified Member Posted November 24, 2018 Posted November 24, 2018 Looking like a solid program today. One of the few times I've been able to watch them.
Vanimal46 Old-Timey Member Posted November 24, 2018 Posted November 24, 2018 Great win for the Gophers! LaBombo and snepp 2
TheLeviathan Old-Timey Member Posted November 24, 2018 Posted November 24, 2018 It's a good win and there is some small progress, but it's hard to judge. They had some really good wins (at Wisconsin, dominate Purdue, beat Fresno) and some absolutely inexcusable losses. snepp and LaBombo 2
Mr. Brooks Verified Member Posted November 24, 2018 Posted November 24, 2018 Is there room on the boat? I'm ready to row.I said many pages ago that I'd buy in when he beats Wisconsin, and not a moment sooner. I meant it. snepp, LaBombo and TheLeviathan 3

snepp Verified Member Posted November 25, 2018 Posted November 25, 2018 It's been frustrating without a doubt, and I had zero confidence in them going into Wisconsin today, but color me very impressed. I was at the Wisconsin game last year, at home, and it was one of the most embarrassing displays of football I've ever had the displeasure of experiencing (the weather didn't help the mood either). Badsmerf Verified Member Posted November 25, 2018 Posted November 25, 2018 Best win for Fleck thus far. Defense was a little soft at times, but the turnovers won the game. Gophers deserved it, and played hard. Hopefully it won't be so long until the next time they win the axe. A lot of key players come back next year too, so there I have hope they can be better.
stringer bell Verified Member Posted November 25, 2018 Posted November 25, 2018 Such an eneven season! Shellacked by the likes of Illinois, Nebraska, and Maryland (and Iowa), but then good wins against Purdue, Fresno and Wisconsin. A really young team who lost too many of their proven veterans, but still competed at the end. With so many young guys returning, they could/should take a step forward.
Badsmerf Verified Member Posted November 25, 2018 Posted November 25, 2018 The decisive wins over Purdue and Wisconsin at the end show progress. Having Brooks and Smith back next year will help the offense, and Winfield will help the defense. See if Fleck can pull any big time recruits. snepp 1
