TheLeviathan Old-Timey Member Posted November 13, 2015 Posted November 13, 2015 Clock issues and bad play calling in crunch time are not the same issues. But by all means Mike, point out what clock issues last year should have prepared them for Michigan? What I saw, and I say this having coached on a sideline for more than a few years now, is a guy who overthought things. He didn't do the simple thing to give himself 2-3 shots, he thought he had the perfect one play and didn't even worry about time. It was a bad play call. Not bad time management. (However thin that distinction is here)
Vanimal46 Old-Timey Member Posted November 13, 2015 Posted November 13, 2015 Do people really think they'll beat Iowa? Just for reference, Minnesota got shut out by Northwestern, and Iowa beat Northwestern by 30... I guess crazier things have happened in college football but that's a bold prediction to pick Minnesota to win on Saturday... The spread on this game is lower than I thought (Iowa -11.5) It's not crazy to think Minnesota with the points could win you some money.

Just for reference, Minnesota got shut out by Northwestern, and Iowa beat Northwestern by 30...Leidner was brutally bad in that game. So bad in fact, that kill pulled a red shirt for less than a quarters worth of play. Leidner plays even as well as he did last week (and that isn't saying much) Minnesota beats nw. Remember, it was a close game until after the third. Northwestern never impressed me. A lot has happened since then. This team has gotten healthier, leidner has been playing better, defense has remained solid. I think Iowa will overlooked them. They are more concerned with Nebraska.
Mike Sixel Old-Timey Member Posted November 13, 2015 Posted November 13, 2015 Nah, MN beat Iowa last year, my friends down there assure me no one is looking past MN. They want payback.

Badsmerf Verified Member Posted November 15, 2015 Posted November 15, 2015 Worst linebacker play I've seen in a long time in this game. I've been saying it every week for a long time, these linebackers are the reason this team is losing. That poock kid is absolutely horrible. How can you not so the run, over and over, when you know... that there is a99% chance a run is coming? Special teams is also abysmal. Unreal. Offense played really well, gameplan was extremely solid. I thought we were past these problems.
Vanimal46 Old-Timey Member Posted November 15, 2015 Posted November 15, 2015 How does that old saying go, Even a blind squirrel? Enjoy the 1 year with Floyd, Iowa.
Mike Sixel Old-Timey Member Posted November 30, 2015 Posted November 30, 2015 thoughts on the coaching change? I admit to being surprised. Horrible season......how many games did they win in the big random number?
Vanimal46 Old-Timey Member Posted November 30, 2015 Posted November 30, 2015 I'm a little surprised that Claeys broke up the staff immediately when Kill left, after spending more than 15 years together. I hope he can find an offensive coach that can develop Croft and he can take over full-time at QB next year. He also really played the injury card this season, which is one of the oldest cliches in the book. Every single college team goes through injuries, and ends up playing kids that weren't expected to contribute. Just call it like it was, a failed season. Going into next year, I'm very intrigued with Brooks and Smith as the backfield tandem. The team will only go as far as the QB takes them, and I'm tired of Liedner.
Mike Sixel Old-Timey Member Posted November 30, 2015 Posted November 30, 2015 I too am surprised, but I think Claeys showed us he is not as conservative as his former boss.
twinsnorth49 Old-Timey Member Posted November 30, 2015 Posted November 30, 2015 I too am surprised, but I think Claeys showed us he is not as conservative as his former boss.Yeah, I think this is what it ultimately boils down to. Claeys seems to want to run a more dynamic offense than Kill ever did and wants someone who will develop personnel and a game plan to do so. Also, with the lack of development shown with Leidner, it's hardly surprising he wanted to part with Zebrowksi and run the risk of the same results with Croft. Mike Sixel 1
Hosken Bombo Disco Community Moderator Posted November 30, 2015 Posted November 30, 2015 How does losing the quarterback recruit figure into this?
Vanimal46 Old-Timey Member Posted November 30, 2015 Posted November 30, 2015 How does losing the quarterback recruit figure into this? They had another QB commit to the team other than Croft?
Vanimal46 Old-Timey Member Posted December 15, 2015 Posted December 15, 2015 Good news for the Gophers this weekend when QB Seth Green committed to the team. Finally, we may have someone who can usurp Leidner of his starting spot. I don't read into how many stars a particular recruit has (he's 4 stars), but any time we can win a recruiting war over schools like Oregon, that's a big win for the program. Mike Sixel 1

As long as he doesn't make any more Austin Powers movies, I'm good with it. He is only 5'4, though.
ALessKosherScott Provisional Member Posted December 15, 2015 Posted December 15, 2015 Green is a great pickup for the Gophers. But at the same time, the rumor is Oregon saw him as more of a long-term project than Terry Wilson and were looking to push Green to receiver. I wouldn't expect him to be ready at QB for a couple of years.

I've read that he's fairly raw (I know it's shocking to read that a freshman quarterback is raw), and that he will probably redshirt. Leidner has shown some progress, but I'd rather see Demry Croft or Green get a shot. Vanimal46 1

He only has 3 years, and I'd say even less, to prove that he can be a Big 10 head coach. If I were him, I wouldn't waste precious time on a QB who's proven time and time again that he's not the answer.

Hoping to see more of Croft next season, hope he puts on some size.

twinsnorth49 Old-Timey Member Posted December 29, 2015 Posted December 29, 2015 So, uh, hey, Gophers win the Quick Lane Bowl.....whoo hoo! 7 game bowl losing streak over. stringer bell 1
bluechipper Provisional Member Posted December 29, 2015 Posted December 29, 2015 Nice win. I didn't have much confidence early when they ran on 3rd and 7 and 3rd and 11 on their first few drives.
stringer bell Verified Member Posted December 29, 2015 Posted December 29, 2015 It was a good game between evenly matched teams. The Gophers might be a bit better, but when they had half their team injured, they probably weren't. I don't have any basis for this, but I believe the MAC is equal to the leavings of the Big Ten after the high-powered teams (The Ohio State, Michigan State, Wisconsin, and probably soon again Michigan, Penn State and Nebraska). The remaining ten annually are about the same as the MAC. twinsnorth49 1
Vanimal46 Old-Timey Member Posted December 30, 2015 Posted December 30, 2015 Leidner waits until the bowl game to have his best game of the season, maybe his career. I'd still like for Croft or Green to win the job next year. Who knows, maybe Claeys or Weber the QB coach can help him progress further than Limegrove or Kill ever did.

A little disappointing, but at least it looks like he can be mediocre instead of really bad.

stringer bell Verified Member Posted December 31, 2015 Posted December 31, 2015 Show Iowa some respect. The Hawkeyes were great this year, but up until 2015 were in decline. Until and unless they back up this season with more dominance, I'll write it off as fluky.
