Vanimal46 Old-Timey Member Posted September 19, 2015 Posted September 19, 2015 Pathetic is right. Total collapse by the offense. Leidner doesn't get all the blame this game, but come on. Even Kent State doesn't respect the pass. It's time for a switch.
USAFChief Twins Daily Contributor Posted September 20, 2015 Posted September 20, 2015 //copied from another source// Play Selection by Down Against Kent St1st Down: 23 runs, 3 passes (1 pass was play action)2nd Down: 14 runs, 11 passes3rd Down: 4 runs, 16 passes (1 run was a QB sneak on 3rd and 1 and the other 3 runs came on the last 3 3rd downs of the game when they were nursing the lead) My own add: zero screen passes. Zero jet sweeps. Zero misdirection plays or reverses. If there was a read option, I missed it. Leidner was bad, again, but the play calling might be worse. O line play looks bad, but it's tough to tell when every opponent knows what play is coming before you do. biggentleben 1

Thanks, Chief, for saving me the time of typing it without having researched the actual play calling. The numbers are more atrocious than my eye even caught. USAFChief 1

They started the 2nd half with a great downfield completion to Wolitarsky and it was the last time they went vertical down the field the rest of the game. They didn't even try to stretch the defense in the least. So many baffling things about that game. Arguably one of the worst games of football I have ever witnessed, at least offensively.

So he punted trying to score, counting on the defense to pitch a shutout the rest of the way and win 10-7. Which worked, I guess, against Kent State, but doesn't say much good about what he thinks of his offense. And will be a tough way to win in the B1G.

I think it has some truth, not sure what that says about how Kill views his offense, regardless of his 4 missing o-line starters.
Badsmerf Verified Member Posted September 20, 2015 Posted September 20, 2015 Watched the game last night. Worst offensive game I've seen in my life. Play calling didn't even give them a chance. Unbelievable. The box was stacked the whole game, yet there was no attempt to burn them. Watching the other big ten teams.... Its going to be tough to get 8 wins I think. Vanimal46 1
Vanimal46 Old-Timey Member Posted September 21, 2015 Posted September 21, 2015 Interesting read in the Star Tribune today concerning the Gopher's mind set after the "win" last Saturday. Sounds like Jerry didn't handle the heat put on him at the press conference.... My 2 cents: Kudos to Kill for making the Gophers football team a relevant topic that people actually care about again. However, you're dealing with issues that most college programs go through: injuries and lousy QB play. That's why you're paid the big, well median for Big 10, bucks to be a head coach - to figure out how to overcome these issues. There's a lot that needs to be figured out this week - does there need to be replacements on the o-line? Can Leidner show any passing ability so defenses can play honest and not stack 10 in the box? Will they stop with their 1960's style play calling on offense? twinsnorth49 1
twinsnorth49 Old-Timey Member Posted September 22, 2015 Posted September 22, 2015 Kill's taking the heat for his team, he's shown to be quite adept at deflecting a lot of criticism directed at his players onto himself. It's actually one of the things I like about him the most, he protects them, he knows they're by and large just kids.

Badsmerf Verified Member Posted September 22, 2015 Posted September 22, 2015 If leidner plays poorly again, he better catch some pine. You can't just keep throwing him out there when it is so obvious to everyone he is hurting the team. Vanimal46 1

If there's any chance he plays he's gotta be mixed in this week before the Big 10 schedule begins....
twinsnorth49 Old-Timey Member Posted September 22, 2015 Posted September 22, 2015 Not directly Gopher football related but U of M, TCF related. For the second year running my four friends and I were denied beer sales at the Gopher game because they do not accept valid Canadian drivers licenses as proof of age, this despite us all being 46 years old. Multiple concession stands told us the same thing so this is clearly a policy being communicated to them by someone in charge. They also told us the rules are different at Vikings games, bizarre. The first year they sold alcohol at TCF we had no problem, that was when it was only available outside the concourse and down the stairs. Since they began selling it at concession stands it has been an issue. To the concession employees credit they sympathize with how absurd it is but seem fearful to bend the rule. I'm not sure what policy they are trying to uphold, I can find no such mention of it on the U's or TCF's website, only that id should be requested to anyone appearing to be under the age of 30 (I'm under no illusion they are handing me that compliment). What's even odder is that it is far stricter than Minnesota State law, which clearly states Canadian drivers licenses are acceptable forms of i.d. to purchase alcohol. It's pretty embarrassing to be turned away from buying beer at my age. Anyone have any knowledge as to why this exists?
USAFChief Twins Daily Contributor Posted September 22, 2015 Posted September 22, 2015 ... my four friends...I call shenanigans.

Vanimal46 Old-Timey Member Posted September 26, 2015 Posted September 26, 2015 Way too easy for Ohio on that long TD.
mikecgrimes Verified Member Posted September 26, 2015 Posted September 26, 2015 As bad as scores and box scores indicate this offense is, it seems as if every time I'm watching they drive right down the field. Given the TCU loss is pretty impressive at this point I wouldn't be shocked if they were ranked next week. Of course the team I watch looks like a team that clearly should be ranked.
USAFChief Twins Daily Contributor Posted September 26, 2015 Posted September 26, 2015 They won't be ranked, but at least it's a squeeker victory at home against a MAC team, instead of a stinker loss. I think they might have had 7 defensive starters out of the game by the end. The offense looked a bit better, but still not impressed with Liedner, although I will admit that's twice now he's gotten the winning TD when they needed it late.
twinsnorth49 Old-Timey Member Posted September 27, 2015 Posted September 27, 2015 23 of 32, 265? Pulls it out of the fire? He was good, it's ok to say it.
Badsmerf Verified Member Posted September 27, 2015 Posted September 27, 2015 Leidner did play well today. Hopefully he can continue. I was disheartened by the defense. Up front they get no pressure and can't plug holes. Next weekend is going to be tough, the d and o line needs to play better. How about that Brooks kid? I like the tandem of him and Smith. Brooks reminds me of Toby Gearhart.

USAFChief Twins Daily Contributor Posted October 4, 2015 Posted October 4, 2015 Cut the cord, Jerry. Mitch just isn't good enough. A QB who can't pass isn't a QB.

Badsmerf Verified Member Posted October 4, 2015 Posted October 4, 2015 This offense has been painful to watch. I don't understand why it has taken this long for kill to pull leidner. After seeing croft, how the **** did kill start the year with leidner? Did throws a nice ball. Guys in stupid rube chat tried dating his ball had no zip, I thought the complete opposite. Nice release, accurate, and gets rid of it on time. He's still a freshman, so he obviously will make mistakes. Would have been nice to make them against Kent state and Ohio. Still, the season is not lost since Iowa beat Wisconsin. I really don't think nw is a very good team. Again, a competent qb at least puts points on the board and the game is completely different. I'm not giving up, hopefully nobody else does.

Having said that, not many QB's have put points up against the Cats this year, their giving up an average of 9 points a game. Very good defense, not sure anyone would say they're not a very good team.

That, is what will hinder them going forward. Most big ten teams have a legitimate qb. I don't see them winning the west.

Ranked 16 and likely moving up, their offense is nowhere near as bad as the Gophers, they're also a lot healthier.
