Mike Sixel Old-Timey Member Posted October 5, 2015 Posted October 5, 2015 Anyone want to continue arguing that Leidner is a legit QB on a supposedly big time NCAA football team?
twinsnorth49 Old-Timey Member Posted October 6, 2015 Posted October 6, 2015 Anyone want to continue arguing that Leidner is a legit QB on a supposedly big time NCAA football team?Supposedly big time NCAA football team? Because they lost to the #16 ranked team with a top 5 defense. I'd continue arguing with you but your post is borderline flame baiting. It's all Leidner, you win. Case closed.
Mike Sixel Old-Timey Member Posted October 6, 2015 Posted October 6, 2015 Uh, I think there is no reason they can't be a big time program. I also don't think Leidner is a QB on a team with that goal, nor do I think they can achieve that with him at QB. No trolling, no nothing other than me stating he's bad. And, they are in year 5, so there should be no real excuses right now, not if this coach is the guy we have been told.
twinsnorth49 Old-Timey Member Posted October 6, 2015 Posted October 6, 2015 Excuses for what? Building a foundation of continued success for years? This program is miles ahead of where Brewster left it and is also on more solid footing than during Mason's years imo (and that's just recent history). The biggest reason? Defense. I'd much rather have the program where it is today than where it ever was with Brewster and where is was after the 2006 debacle to Texas Tech under Mason. But that's just on the field stuff, the off field stuff is where this program has really changed. They won't win the West this year, especially with a crossover game against OSU, you know, the #1 ranked team in the country OSU. But I wouldn't bet against them next year.
Vanimal46 Old-Timey Member Posted October 6, 2015 Posted October 6, 2015 Agreed that is a big difference from past regimes is that the Gophers finally have a great defense. In all years prior, the defense was always a liability. I will say I hope that Kill can find the solution to the offensive woes before the defensive talent starts committing elsewhere..... As far as Leidner, the horse has been beaten enough already, and no new hot Gophers takes can be made about him. There hasn't been a lot of consistency with offensive starters either. One week it's Smith at RB, the next it's Brooks. The o-line is shaky at best. The West division title may be out of reach, but it could be worse... Come on down to Austin and you'll see what a real train wreck looks like. twinsnorth49 1
Badsmerf Verified Member Posted October 11, 2015 Posted October 11, 2015 Leidner sucked again today. Luckily, defense was great and running game beat it up. O line completely dominated that game. Fun to watch that happen. Defensive line was good for the first time all season. When both lines are winning, pretty good chance the team wins. It was nice to give croft some playing time. Hopefully he continues to get snaps each week since the rs was burned. BTW, I said northwestern wasn't very good, and it showed today. That team won't win games against competent offenses.
TheLeviathan Old-Timey Member Posted October 11, 2015 Posted October 11, 2015 Maybe this will get the running game going enough for the offense to start moving things. They looked really good handing it off and opening up holes.
twinsnorth49 Old-Timey Member Posted October 11, 2015 Posted October 11, 2015 How did that game have anything to do with Leidner? He threw the ball 12 times. To even mention the QB in a game like that is hilarious. Northwestern held Stanford to 6 points, if you don't think that's a legit offense you need to watch more college football. Great win for the Gophers, that can be said without tearing anyone down.
Badsmerf Verified Member Posted October 11, 2015 Posted October 11, 2015 The commentators were pretty much calling for croft! Remember, this was a close game until Brooks broke a 70 yard td. The offense was anemic before that. Yeah, I'm going to say a qb sucks when in a blowout win he only has 50 yards passing. As far as the northwestern and Stanford, I think it was a fluke. Northwestern has a nice defense, but defense alone only gets you so far. At some point, a team needs to put up points. Northwestern won't, and the gophers will struggle to worth a one dimensional offense. But hey, that is one more dimension than nwu has.
Vanimal46 Old-Timey Member Posted October 12, 2015 Posted October 12, 2015 The Gophers found their identity again in the 2nd half, which was very nice to see. They had a true freshman starting his 1st game at C in Tyler Moore who seemed to set the tone for the rest of the O-line. Leidner fortunately didn't have to do much this game, but he did make 2 nice TD passes near the goal line. This is exactly what the team needed when you're going up against a team that's lost 17 of their last 18 Big 10 games.. I'm excited to see what they can do at home vs. Nebraska before the real test begins.... vs. #12 Michigan @ #1 Ohio State @ #17 Iowa twinsnorth49 1
Mike Sixel Old-Timey Member Posted October 12, 2015 Posted October 12, 2015 (edited) I'm happy they won. Nebraska might be the most heart breaking team ever this year, let's hope the Gophers can continue that (I was born in Nebraska, my whole family is Nebraska fans, but not this year, if I have to choose, I want MN). bluechipper Provisional Member Posted October 17, 2015 Posted October 17, 2015 Even when Mitch Leidner is good... He's still not good. Might be time to try something new.
bluechipper Provisional Member Posted October 17, 2015 Posted October 17, 2015 Kicking a field goal down by 16 in the 4th quarter is always smart. Mike Sixel 1
Vanimal46 Old-Timey Member Posted October 17, 2015 Posted October 17, 2015 Barring a miracle win over the next 3 games against ranked opponents, I don't see the gophers winning more than 1 game the rest of the way.
Mike Sixel Old-Timey Member Posted October 17, 2015 Posted October 17, 2015 What happened to the defense? This season looks like a big step back.
bluechipper Provisional Member Posted October 18, 2015 Posted October 18, 2015 At least their appears to be some talent at RB and WR for next year. Bench Liedner and get Demry Croft some experience.
DaveW Old-Timey Member Posted October 18, 2015 Posted October 18, 2015 Nebraska! We have a shot at a 6-6 season now!
Vanimal46 Old-Timey Member Posted October 28, 2015 Posted October 28, 2015 Wow stunning news this morning. Jerry Kill retires effective immediately for health reasons. Tracy Claes will take over as interim head coach. Huge blow to the program.

biggentleben Verified Member Posted October 28, 2015 Posted October 28, 2015 Terrible timing as well with Michigan coming to town this weekend.
Mike Sixel Old-Timey Member Posted October 28, 2015 Posted October 28, 2015 Man, that sucks for him. I hope he can get his health under control. Good luck to him.
Vanimal46 Old-Timey Member Posted October 28, 2015 Posted October 28, 2015 A couple of Kill quotes I'm reading on Twitter.... "My doctor told me, if I didn't move on with my life I may be a guy that don't think too good down the road. I want to be able to think." "When I walked off the practice field last night a part of me died." Sounds like he's been experiencing seizures again. Sad to read. He seems like a very like-able person. Hope he gets his health under control.
twinsnorth49 Old-Timey Member Posted October 28, 2015 Posted October 28, 2015 What sad news, Kill seems like the most genuine of people, I feel awful for him. It's a huge blow for the athletes he cared so much about and needless to say the program as a whole. I was a big fan of Kill's, despite some of their struggles this year, I thought he was establishing a standard of excellence at the U which was going to be sustained. What I liked most about him,was that he did it without giving off a shred of self interest. Hope he finds happiness away from the field.
bluechipper Provisional Member Posted October 28, 2015 Posted October 28, 2015 That's really too bad. Jerry seemed like a really good guy. Hopefully getting away from the stress of the game will have a positive impact on his health going forward.
Seth Stohs Site Manager Posted October 28, 2015 Posted October 28, 2015 Very sad. That press conference was excruciating to listen to. So emotional. If someone listened to or watched that without getting goosebumps or without their eyes sweating a little bit, I feel sorry for them. It's another great reminder that these are people, with families, spouses, kids, parents... Tough! twinsnorth49 1
Mike Sixel Old-Timey Member Posted October 28, 2015 Posted October 28, 2015 Seth, pretty much everyone I've read or heard from this am said that it was a gut wrenching press conference. I'm almost glad I was in a meeting.....but I might still listen later. As you said, it's good to recall we are all people.
Badsmerf Verified Member Posted October 28, 2015 Posted October 28, 2015 I feel for him and his family. He seems like such a genuine person, I really hope this decision helps him. This team has not looked like the past 2 seasons of gopher football. I'm wondering how much his health has been impacting the team. The last few weeks is the first time I've questioned Kill's ability to lead this team into a national contender. Now, the U has a huge problem on their hands. There is no AD and they need to replace their football coach. I hope they don't simply promote TC. I really think they need to hire someone with national star power to draw recruits in. Kill was doing well finding some guys and developing them, but MN will never compete with Mich or OSU without getting better recruits. they will need to find that diamond in the ruff. Easier said than done.
Mike Sixel Old-Timey Member Posted October 28, 2015 Posted October 28, 2015 Ready for blasphemy? I would love the u to get out of athletics, and run this place like schools in the rest of the world.
twinsnorth49 Old-Timey Member Posted October 28, 2015 Posted October 28, 2015 Ready for blasphemy? I would love the u to get out of athletics, and run this place like schools in the rest of the world. Not blasphemy Mike, Utopian maybe, but not blasphemy.
Mike Sixel Old-Timey Member Posted October 28, 2015 Posted October 28, 2015 Not blasphemy Mike, Utopian maybe, but not blasphemy. Ya, I don't see any near term future where universities become fixated on being universities, but a guy can dream..... And, it really is sad news about Kill. I may not have believed he could take them to the next level, but he sure seems like a genuinely good guy. twinsnorth49 1
